That original post about Olive is one of my favourite things I've found through Metafilter.
RIP Olive.

NYC meetup on April 4th or 5th?
Thanks for the tip about the signing, jonmc--it sounds great and I wish I could go but I'm booked to see a play that night, otherwise I'd definitely be there!

Aw, sounds great! I am really looking forward to meeting you guys.
I am SO excited about going to New York again--I was there two years ago for the first time, and I loved it so much. I wasn't sure what to expect before I got there, but as soon as we got off the plane I nearly passed out from the sudden rush of just...being in New York. That probably sounds corny. I think I'm driving my family and friends crazy with my excitement over going back. And a meetup will be a... [more]

Saturday works well for me! I will add this to the meetup sidebar.
Does anyone have any ideas for location? I'll be staying in Chelsea, if that area prompts any suggestions, but I am more than happy to go elsewhere.

From the FAQ I see I should wait to sidebar until after we agree on a place (and time). I propose 8:00.

OK, sounds like we're set for 8:00, Saturday April 5th, at 151. Excellent! I'll sidebar it now.
[Ukeleles! Ah, the memories--I used to play the ukulele as a child in school.]

spec80: Count me in on the Dash Dogs. That photo on their website of a bacon-topped hot dog looks like a piece of manna from heaven. Yum!

Oh no! Closed! My hopes are dashed! [sorry, couldn't help it]
The Chihuahua does sound good, though.

It was indeed lovely to meet up with you folks. Thank you for showing me a good time on a New York evening! Who knew I would come to associate Metafilter with tasty rice pudding.
I've got some photos but won't be able to upload them for a while as I'll be in transit for the next couple of weeks. I think it'll be a bit of a chore to find internet access in France, especially with my bad French. However, I'll add them when I get back home.
Thanks again for the fun meetup.

Easter Week NYC Meetup
Oh man! I am going to be in NYC for a conference the following week. :-( I was just coming in here to propose a meetup for April 4th or 5th when I saw this thread. Bad timing on my part.
Is there anyone who can't make it to the meetup on the 28th/29th, or, uh, anyone who won't be meetupped-out, who would like to get together on the 4th or 5th?

I wish I could go to this meetup! It sounds like a lot of fun.
Thanks, spec80. I'll post a separate thread in case there are others who'd like to go on the 4th/5th, but can't make the 28th/29th weekend and don't click on this thread.

Of a 100-page grammar book, you may need 3 pages, or less.
(Get people to help you figure out which 3!)
I suggest the pages that tell you when to use the word "less" and when to use "fewer."

I find that fewer and fewer of my native speaker students use the word "fewer" at all, in their speech or their writing; "less"... [more]

I know. I have to brace myself for the inevitable look of disappointment when I tell them, "Well, there ARE some exceptions to this..." or "This doesn't ALWAYS apply..."

a friend of mine teaches ESL and mentioned that a question she occasionally gets from students is, "What is the difference between 'the' and 'the'?" One being pronounced "thÉ™", th-schwa, the toneless vowel; the other being pronounced "thee". It's a surprising question to English speakers.
I get asked that too, and as far as I can tell, the schwa ending for "the" is the most common among most native English... [more]

Ha, that's funny! I enjoyed reading your update. I think deer are very cute, but then they don't come into my yard and eat my flowers.
I have a very sweet, animal-loving friend who goes all crazy-eyed whenever the subject of deer comes up. They have systematically chewed up most of the flowers and trees in her yard. It's funny to watch her transform from a pacifist animal lover to a rabid venison fan.

I'm sorry to hear about your son, arse_hat.
Thank you for this post, ColdChef. (By the way, I LOVED the interview you did on the Metafilter podcast. If I needed a funeral home and lived in your area I would go to you.) I think this is very useful information and it is something I do think about every once in a while. I agree with goodnewsfortheinsane that this issue--how to notify online communities of the death of a member--is something that... [more]

Metabiorhythms
Hmm, that's funny, lekvar! That's why I joined too, after years of lurking. When I first started reading Metafilter, memberships were closed, then open for about an hour a day or something like that. I never managed to sign up quickly enough. I was happy enough to lurk. But then, I kept seeing AskMe questions that I thought I could answer helpfully, so I got sucked in.
I am addicted to AskMe. I check it a lot--although I check the blue a lot too. I'd say I spend about... [more]
