Where are those danged gold plates?
I have run across more than one researcher in my library seeking The Archaeology of Palestine by William Foxwell Albright because it apparently documents a site (tomb? catacomb?) that confirms the truth of - something; sorry, I don't know the details, but it might be a useful resource or spur someone else's memory.

Help me find old diaries published or placed online
In the First Person indexes historical online letters, diaries and oral histories - three-quarters of them are on the web in university archives and similar types of collections; the rest are available through subscription databases created by Alexander Street Press, so check your library's web site to see if they can supply access. OAIster is another search tool that indexes digitized library collections, and many of them contain diaries.... [more]

Recommend a Vegas spot for a small wedding dinner?
"North American Normal" characterizes Rosemary's pretty well; it's about 30 minutes off strip at Sahara and Tenaya, wine list is extensive, and locally owned. They run some promotions that might help you reach your target cost. It's great food, a nice space and fairly formal service without being stuffy or pretentious.

Losing a tug of war with my faucet.
I just replaced the sprayer part of my delta one because I failed to clean the mineral deposits off as autojack describes, above - when the sprayer holes became clogged, water ran down the faucet and dripped down through the pull-out connection hole. If you have hard water, you might look for a different kind of sprayer design.

How long is too long?
In my experience in academia, it is essential to address the required and relevant desired qualifications in the cover letter. It may be different in other industries.
I have regularly seen candidates whose cover letters do not address the advertised qualifications be weeded out by the search committee in the first pass through. A one page letter usually expresses a desire for employment and notes relevant credentials, and that's usually not enough information for... [more]

Effects of globalization in urban Ethiopia
Try not using the term "globalization" in your search. Your prof has probably given you dozens of examples of the effects of globalization in other regions.
Instead, read up on contemporary urban Ethiopia and you should be able to identify some ways that the world economy intersects with people's activities.

Songs with dogs in them?
There's barking and dog handling advice in (Blue Gummed Catahoula) Alligator Eating Dog as recorded by Clarence Gatemouth Brown - that dog has "ears like radar, eyes like fire, feet like a bear, hair like wire..." and some possible supernatural qualities.... [more]

How to pay for Grad school?
here's an overview (pdf of ppt, yuk!) of resources available at my particular library for both individual study and project-based grant funding. I especially recommend the free online directory kept by Jon Harrison at Michigan State.

Student Loans and FHA Debt to Income Ratio
My student loans are in repayment and were counted in my debt to income ratio for an FHA loan. My loans are direct from the Dept. of Education, which offers a variety or repayment plans and allows you to change them by request.
Your debt/income ratio is determined by monthly payment amounts. If you can switch from a traditional 10-year repayment schedule to one of the extended or graduated (up to 30 years) plans, you can reduce the monthly payment amount substantially,... [more]

Another offbeat religious group was the Oneida Community - Sarah Vowell's got a readable take on it in Assassination Vacation.
A mid-19th century dig yielded the Cardiff Giant, but no one was fooled for long.
The herd of white deer living inside the Seneca Army depot fence are neither supernatural nor hoax.... [more]

How do I find authors the same age as me?
If you have an Ottawa Public Library card, you can use the Literature Resource Center database. It's on this alphabetical list - choose "search authors by type" and then you can pick "born after" from the drop down and enter a year. This will search authors profiled in most of the literary reference books that Gale produces.
The links in your list of names will take you to an author page with at minimum a biographical sketch and bibliography. I found... [more]

Have you tried the Solutions by Hanes Luxe line? I found these at Target and was impressed - they are definitely hard and smooth instead of soft and fuzzy, and very sheer.

Butternut squash making my hands weird
That has happened to me too, and it was painful enough that I always use gloves for butternut squash now. Other cases have been documented, such as
Potter, T. S., & Hashimoto, K. (1994). Butternut squash (cucurbita moschata) dermatitis. Contact Dermatitis, 30(2), 123.
The authors hypothesize that it is an allergic reaction since they also handled squashes and were unaffected; they treated with a corticosteroid and the squash-preparer recovered within 24 hours.

White specks in the pupil.
I saw a new optometrist last week and was told I had many tiny congenital cataracts - said they looked like little grains of salt, they've always been there, and they do not and will not affect my vision - he only mentioned them so that I would be aware in case of a cataract investigation in the distant future. I grew up going to an ophthalmologist who never remarked on them - my impression was they're common and harmless.

What's there to do in the Vegas area?
Seconding China Ranch, which is an hour's drive - to make a day trip of it, there's a nice hike to a slot canyon back behind the date farm. If you go out there and the weather's not too hot, you might check out the Tecopa Hot Springs, either at the formerly public park or one of the private resorts next to it (nude bathing only). The nearby town of Shoshone has a couple of good spots for lunch, a small museum, and a ghost town of caves that miners used to live in.

An English book set in blackletter?
U of Minnesota has online access to Early English Books Online, which has photo reproductions of most books published in England between 1475 and 1700.
Once you log in, may I recommend this example. The preface is not in blackletter but the text is, starting at page 5.

Non-tourist Las Vegas websites?
Clark County Parks & Recreation offers lots of interesting cultural events, including the wonderful World Vibrations music and dance series. UNLV's events calendar lists music, theater and lecture programs on campus; no doubt there's another (more user-friendly) one for sports events.
