How does my online banking fob work?
I had one of these back in early 2000 when I worked for a big company in California. As far as I know, the fob doesn't receive numbers -- it generates them. But like you, I'm a little mystified as to how CitiBank knows that the seemingly random fob numbers are correct.

GTA/Toronto area electronics surplus?
Chuckles,
I bought a piece of electronics that came with a severely underpowered adapter -- something like 300 or 400 mA, which causes the thing to be all but unusable. Folks have reported that using a power adapter with 5-6v and 700mA to 1A fixes it nicely. So that's what I'm after.

Yeah, I had a whole bunch of Car Wars stuff and played it maybe three times. The Autoduel computer game, though? Badass.

Dragon's Lair Uncut
Yeah, I remember seeing Dragon's Lair when I was, what, ten years old, and even then going "Dude, you can't move the way you want to move? Screw that." and going over to the Star Wars vector graphics sit-down cabinet. Aw man, there was a game.
Seriously, even the Journey video game appealed more to me than Dragon's Lair.

Don't be put off by Dr. Bronner's uncanny resemblance to Dr. Strangelove -- the Bronner soap is *magic*. Do you have a Trader Joe's nearby? They should carry it.

Harper gets a crush
I was hoping this would be Harper singing about how much he loves Obama, but no such luck. Oh well.
Also, should I use a grocer's apostrophe in my post too? Seems to be the in thing.

How much to spend on a used bike?
$550 was the cheapest price at your local shop? Weird - I'm in Canada, where bicycles definitely cost more on average, and I got a new hybrid for about $420 from a local shop, and I love the hell out of it. It's a KHS, which are made solidly and with pretty good (e.g. Shimano, low end on mine but still just fine) componentry.
Also, Portland? Aren't you guys like bike capital of the universe? I'd do some more shopping around.

Fun Church to become a minister of? Marry people in Canada?
If I recall correctly, ULC isn't valid in Canada. Canada takes a rather more restricted view of what is a church and what isn't than the US does -- Scientology is one example.

jeffburdges, Discordianism is my go-to religion for, well, anything religious, but it's not recognized as a religion by the US even, so imaswinger couldn't marry someone *as a chaplin or Pope*, although maybe there's some sort of civil ceremony they could do? Donno.

jeffburdges: This is Canada. We don't have states. We also don't have the very liberal definition of what makes a church that the US does. So please, please, please stop quoting US laws here; it's not applicable to the poster's question.

Hello imaswinger, I asked a Real Live Librarian in BC about this, and here's what she had to say:
According to Vital Stats BC, only religious leaders registered with VS can perform marriages here... or authorized marriage commissioners, who serve 5 year terms (no temp appointments). Look at "Arrange the Marriage Ceremony" on this page: http://www.vs.gov.bc.ca/marriage/howto.html
The site also has a section for aspiring marriage... [more]

Hard Core Solo No-Mo'
I saw HCL maybe nine years ago and can't remember jack about it. However, I saw Highway 61 at about the same time and I remember a whole hell of a lot about it. It's an awesome, awesome film. Jello's only in it for a few minutes though.

I worked in a drive-in theater when Gremlins 2 came out, and at each showing we actually had people come up to the booth complaining about the broken tape. Oh, and all the honking, honking, honking.

Thinking of moving to Toronto...Advice?
Do you at all qualify for a
NAFTA work permit? It's how I moved from the US to Canada, and although it's temporary (but renewable), it's much easier than the standard immigration process. Faster too; a couple of months for me instead of 1+ years.

TN Visa: Help me prepare!
I'm a librarian currently working in Canada, and I didn't have an interview at the border. Now granted, I came across at Sarnia, ON at like two in the morning, but really all it was was a matter of handing my paperwork to the very pleasant border guys, and them stamping out a permit for me. Dead easy. I guess they could grump and grill you, but as blue_beetle says, that's a crapshoot.
So bring every single piece of paperwork you've been issued -- your degree, your... [more]

MLS overqualifies for Assistants or Technicians?
It wouldn't disqualify you outright but as a library manager myself I'd be a little bit leery of hiring MLSs for LA jobs - because I'd be expecting them to be applying for MLS positions, which means to me that they might be leaving earlier rather than later. Lots of libraries located at or near library schools have tons of MLSs in LA jobs though, so maybe its just me.
If you won't leave your area (a very short sighted view imho) and don't think you can get an MLS job... [more]

Help me find a way to move to Toronto from the US
I'm an American working under a NAFTA permit near Toronto, and I can attest that if you possibly can go the NAFTA route to do it - dead simple from your end, and reasonably easy from your employer's. However:
1. The permit is only good for a year. Renewals are pretty easy - I just got mine renewed - but there's a nonzero possibility that something bad could happen.
2. There are restrictions on what you can do under NAFTA - no second job, and... [more]

ROACH ON MY FACE + wimp = oh no
I used to live in Southeast Asia where we did have big flying roaches occasionally, but they were nowhere near six inches long, so I personally find it hard to believe that you had a roach that big in NYC. Could you be mistaken? Perhaps you had a particularly vivid nightmare? At any rate, roaches really do not like people, so nthing the sentiments that the roach has long since scurried out.
Do you have some friends or neighbors that can go into your bedroom with you or... [more]

Why do some men hang out to talk in office restrooms?
When I lived in California, guys talked in the restroom. While you were at the urinal, it was not at all unusual to have a coworker start a conversation. No problems with that whatsoever with me -- I'm not pee-shy.
