Ask post: All we are is dust in the wind, dude.
Yup, that's it. I've seen this happen myself, and it actually works.

Ask post: Podcast CMS needed
I used Drupal for a podcast CMS back when I was teaching podcasting to university students. Worked fine. This was with an early version of Drupal 5 -- it's probably even better now.

Ask post: Help me find a way to move to Toronto from the US
I'm an American working under a NAFTA permit near Toronto, and I can attest that if you possibly can go the NAFTA route to do it - dead simple from your end, and reasonably easy from your employer's. However:

1. The permit is only good for a year. Renewals are pretty easy - I just got mine renewed - but there's a nonzero possibility that something bad could happen.

2. There are restrictions on what you can do under NAFTA - no second job, and... [more]

Ask post: ROACH ON MY FACE + wimp = oh no
I used to live in Southeast Asia where we did have big flying roaches occasionally, but they were nowhere near six inches long, so I personally find it hard to believe that you had a roach that big in NYC. Could you be mistaken? Perhaps you had a particularly vivid nightmare? At any rate, roaches really do not like people, so nthing the sentiments that the roach has long since scurried out.

Do you have some friends or neighbors that can go into your bedroom with you or... [more]

Ask post: Why do some men hang out to talk in office restrooms?
When I lived in California, guys talked in the restroom. While you were at the urinal, it was not at all unusual to have a coworker start a conversation. No problems with that whatsoever with me -- I'm not pee-shy.

Should you assume this? Yes, absolutely. Will they be? Probably not.

Ask post: Too big for her?
Lube will help. How much it'll help, I don't know, but it's entirely possible that your girlfriend isn't hurting from your size, but from the lack of natural lubrication. I'd say it's worth a try.

Ask post: Is a folding bicycle right for a train commute in Chicago?
I had a Dahon Speed P7 and it wasn't so bad. Nowadays though there's a lot more variety in folders -- used to be just Dahon and the super-expensive Bromptons, Birdys, etc. I own a KHS Urban X (normal, not a foldy bike) and it's superb; I'd look at their folders if I were looking to buy another (here's one, here's another; sorry for linking to the Canada site, but their US site here seems to be broken).

I haven't ridden one of this style, but the Strida bikes look... [more]

As far as I know, lanesplitting is *only* legal in California and in no other state in the US, let alone Ontario. Could be wrong though.

If you're just moving up there for the summer you're probably not going to be a resident -- it'll be one of those six month max visitor's permit, right? At any rate, a summer is not enough time for OHIP to kick in, so you'll have to arrange for alternate insurance or hope that the insurer you have now will cover you in Canada, although I think this is highly unlikely.

The wait time thing is typically exaggerated by Americans who are, deep down, ashamed of their system... [more]

Oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah one more thing. Hopefully you're still reading this thread. But make sure that the drugs you need are available here. Check out my frantic-ish askme post about one of my wife's meds that, thankfully enough, we ended up not needing.

Ask post: Book catalogue with web OPAC?
If you're looking for something reasonably easy to get up and going and that you want to transition into a "real" catalog later on, Koha is probably the best right now. Evergreen, the other big open source library LMS, is a fair bit more difficult to install, although it's getting better.

No open source catalog has a straight, simple CSV import as far as I can tell. They're all tuned to MARC.

Ask post: What computer science classes I should take before Graduate Schools?
As Jessamyn says - learn LAMP/general Unix stuff. I am a systems librarian, and I know from experience that it's truly hard to find MLS people who know anything in-depth about it - and Linux/Unix is the backbone of nearly any good-sized library.

I work academic, but have a nigh-useless BA (woo creative writing FTW) and only the MLS otherwise. I can get away with this because of my tech skills.

Ask post: I just can't do it Captain! I don't have the power!
UK is 220 volt power; North America (well, at least US and Canada, probably Mexico) is 110 volt. If you don't have a transformer it probably won't work. But at least it won't blow up, like if you plugged a 110 appliance into a 220 outlet.

thomas144 has it on the nose: get a multiregion DVD player. Try looking here for help.

I am an American working here in Ontario on a NAFTA permit, which means that I am not officially a resident. I have OHIP though -- in my situation, I had to live in Ontario for three months before OHIP kicked in; before that, I was on a plan sponsored by my university.

I imagine it will be similar for you.

Ask post: From whence Gulliver?
My current library has two catalogs, sort of. Maybe three, depending on how you're counting. The older one does have a name as a first name, but the other two do not. We usually refer to them as "the catalog" now.

The prevailing theory in library circles, at least as I see it, is to not single out the catalog for any special mention, as it's supposed to be part of your general web presence and not some monolith that sits apart. Back in the bad old days, an... [more]

Ask post: Is my sourdough starter supposed to do that?
I believe this is normal, although I've never made starter by adding in store-bought yeast; just by mixing flour and water together, waiting a day, dumping out half and adding more flour and water. This process took about a month IIRC, but once I got a good culture going I had pretty much what you describe - good growth followed by shrinking, beery smell, brownish liquid. I think you're probably okay, although it made not be very sour since your starter is mostly store-bought yeast right now.... [more]

I've encrypted portions of drives with Truecrypt on Linux -- not folders, but logical drives -- and I haven't seen any appreciable performance hit.

What might be best for anonymous is to divide their disk up and keep sensitive info on a Truecrypt portion, rather than the whole disk.

Ask post: Where's all my stuff?
XAMPP and PHPTriad aren't inventory management systems, they're installers for PHP, Apache, and MySQL. So they won't work for you because there aren't any applications written on top of them, but to call them "half-baked" is probably uncalled for. That said, yeah, these kinds of things are probably overkill for your situation. Why not use Excel for this? It would probably work just fine for what you need.
