Let's put a smile on that face
I viewed this page without logging in for the first time in quite a while, and the ad at the bottom of the page featured the Joker from The Dark Knight. It was a sweet synchronicity. I'll never look at Woody the same way.

In My Mind I'm Going to [North or South?] Carolina
I've also never heard anyone refer to Carolina except in reference to the college (UNC for me, because I went there and work there now, though I don't doubt that there are misguided souls who think that USC is "Carolina") or in song lyrics, and I have lived in North Carolina my whole life.
I think any rivalry between the two states is generally in good fun, though I have heard it said that "The only good thing about South Carolina is that if it fell into... [more]

How common is it for people to just not turn up for work without calling in sick?
I don't know what it's like in corporate jobs or salaried ones, but this happens all the time in the restaurant industry. Whether you get canned on the first or second no-call, no-show seems to depend on a number of things: the amount of time you've been working there, how good you are at your job, and how easily you can be replaced. At the places I've worked, a seasoned cook gets a lot more leeway than a new busperson/dishwasher. For the wait staff, it usually comes down to how good your... [more]

Down with slurp.
I feel like there are daily or weekly things like blogs, newspapers, magazine articles, etc. that are totally fair game, but linking to an already well known daily comic is totally different. Just because I particularly enjoyed today's Achewood doesn't mean it's ok to post it to the front page.

I can't help but agree with that. After nearly pissing myself trying to conceive of a McSweeny's/Zombo hybrid, I almost want to encourage this sort of reckless posting.

I don't understand. Is DeLillo really writing these posts or is it some sort of DeLillo parody? Or is he parodying himself? If it's not him, isn't that libel?

So I guess it's not libel? Is there a word for ascribing writing to someone when it's not actually written by that person? Aplagiarism?

Man, this whole exchange has made me feel dumb. I've been typing dumb things and posting them to the internet. I feel like I make up this demographic that deserves to be satirized. Sorry for bothering you guys with my idiocy.

17 Years Later Here We Are Entertain Us
People always talk about what a great songwriter Cobain was, and I used to agree until recently. About a Girl was in my head, and I was thinking how it applied to my life. Then I realized that one of the lyrics is "I do pick up number two" and that he was talking to his girlfriend about how he does so clean up the cat shit in their filthy house. That made me feel ill, and regret a lot of the time I spent listening to Nirvana.

Sorry for being a douche-bag, but while our opinions on whether or not Homestarrunner is interesting may vary widely, it certainly isn't new. I don't mean to get all "your favorite internet video sucks," but I don't think a link to the most current instance of pre-existing internet phenomena is FPP-worthy.

Where to fix my bag in NC?
There's a place at the flea market at the State Fairgrounds in Raleigh that does quality leatherwork and repair on the cheap. They have to split for the NC State fair though, so next weekend is gonna be their last weekend for a while.

Mad props to these people for getting their cocktail party chatter study published in motherfucking Science. N=48 FTW!
Psychological studies which take into account precise physiological measurements necessarily have smaller sample sizes due to the various methodological difficulties involved. I'm not familiar with eye blink measurements in particular, but fMRI studies routinely have n's as small as 10.

Soft science is soft.
Being well versed in "hard" science doesn't mean you understand how other disciplines work, and comparing solid, peer-reviewed research to phrenology is about as worthwhile as viewing it as a legitimate pursuit.

Loves me/loves me not
So, you're dating a girl who shares her residence with a cat. If your relationship is going to get anywhere...
You cannot let the feline beast win. Every time someone does this, it makes it that much harder for the rest of us who date a cocathabiting individual. You can feed the cat, pet the cat, and play with the cat, but never succumb to its will.

Can you become ill by studying illness?
Psychology is a broad science with a lot more to it than the study of maladaptive behavior or disorders of any kind. That being said, the study of abnormal psychology will not drive you insane any more than the study of pathology is going to make you ill.

You can't hurry love... right? How to go slow without sending the wrong signals?
The friendly and romantic aspects of your relationship can develop concurrently. I'd tell her that you haven't been in a romantic relationship for some time, and you'd like to take things slowly. If you already "asked her out" and went on a "date," it's a little bit late in the game to put that aspect of your relationship completely on hold while you become buddies. However, that doesn't mean that you have to leap into some sort of advanced coupledom. Just because you... [more]

Colonics - positive feedback?
I once dated a girl who was all about colonics. She claimed that they made her feel healthy and energetic. This girl was pretty together and very smart, though she did engage in quite a few "alternative" health practices.
She encouraged me to get one, but I declined, instead favoring the awesome getting methods of a robot made out of meat's grandmother.
