Tiny Silver Death Machine
I don't understand. Is DeLillo really writing these posts or is it some sort of DeLillo parody? Or is he parodying himself? If it's not him, isn't that libel?

So I guess it's not libel? Is there a word for ascribing writing to someone when it's not actually written by that person? Aplagiarism?

Man, this whole exchange has made me feel dumb. I've been typing dumb things and posting them to the internet. I feel like I make up this demographic that deserves to be satirized. Sorry for bothering you guys with my idiocy.

oh gross!
I was a little too young to know about these in their hayday, but some of my friends' older siblings had them, and, man, I thought they were hot shit.

The Great Schlep
My grandparents live in Florida, but I'm pretty sure that going down there to try and influence their political decisions would make for the most mutually unpleasant visit of all time.

Avast, Ye Scurvy Homophobes!
Our economy, health care system, and international reputation may be in shitter, but fucked if our pirates don't have some righteous fight left in em'. Stories like this make me damn proud to be an American.

17 Years Later Here We Are Entertain Us
People always talk about what a great songwriter Cobain was, and I used to agree until recently. About a Girl was in my head, and I was thinking how it applied to my life. Then I realized that one of the lyrics is "I do pick up number two" and that he was talking to his girlfriend about how he does so clean up the cat shit in their filthy house. That made me feel ill, and regret a lot of the time I spent listening to Nirvana.

A single link to Homestarrunner is not the best of the web.

Sorry for being a douche-bag, but while our opinions on whether or not Homestarrunner is interesting may vary widely, it certainly isn't new. I don't mean to get all "your favorite internet video sucks," but I don't think a link to the most current instance of pre-existing internet phenomena is FPP-worthy.

That was so good. Does anyone else remember the Where's Waldo game for the NES? Man, that was one of the worst video games of all time.

Mad props to these people for getting their cocktail party chatter study published in motherfucking Science. N=48 FTW!
Psychological studies which take into account precise physiological measurements necessarily have smaller sample sizes due to the various methodological difficulties involved. I'm not familiar with eye blink measurements in particular, but fMRI studies routinely have n's as small as 10.

Soft science is soft.
Being well versed in "hard" science doesn't mean you understand how other disciplines work, and comparing solid, peer-reviewed research to phrenology is about as worthwhile as viewing it as a legitimate pursuit.

Look, I am in no way, shape or form pro-Prohibition, but can we please stop calling things spiritual? It's all just chemicals in your brain, man
Just chemicals in your brain? This is a terrible argument. Spend some time learning about the chemicals in your brain. I think you'll find yourself hard pressed not to be overcome by a sense of awe and mystery. The system is a wonder to behold, and, despite the ongoing efforts of... [more]

RIP, DFW
Many people, including me and evidently the Rolling Stone editor who gave him the 2000 McCain gig, considered him this generation's Hunter S. Thompson.

Hearts and Minds
Considering the fact that cognitive psychology's roots are deeply entrenched in the need for soldiers/pilots to efficiently interface with WWII technology, this shouldn't come as a surprise, but it's still damn scary.

What I'm really concerned about is weaponized transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). Though I doubt it would be possible to attain a high degree of specificity with the current technology, I bet that the military could readily deliver a strong magnetic pulse into someone's brain.

No matter what blogs may say of waiters sharing tips with bus boys I have the sense that they and the kitchen staff don't see any of that tip money in most situations
I tip out at least 15% of the tip money I get. Every night. I don't really like doing that, but I know that the hostess who seats my section, the busboy who cleans that section, and the bartenders who pour my drinks are counting on it. All of those people are... [more]
