Ask post: What do I need to know about closing on a house?
Congrats!

In Calgary here- have purchased two properties and sold one and our lawyers did everything pretty seamlessy and for about $600 last purchase (took possession Feb 2005). They arranged power, water, sewer, gas for us; we had to manage phone, cable, etc. Lawyers apprise city of prop transfer but if your city has a direct deposit for prop tax you have to undertake that yourselves, at last we did.

Ask post: Canadian Repatriation
I don't know any US citizens in Canada who've taken Canadian citizenship (they're dual, in other words) who still file US taxes. My former boss hasn't done it since 1980. Even if you haven't renounced, if you never intend to live in the US again, the consequences for not filing appear to be nonexistent.

If you've renounced then of course this doesn't matter to you but FWIW I know many Americans who just stopped filing and none have had any adverse consequences.

Ask post: The old red, white and blue.
You poor BCers. Come to Alberta. There are at least six different "Trappist" beers at the tiny liquor store around the corner from my house in Calgary, and that's probably the worst selection in town.

I can also get Fruli for $2.79 a bottle.

Just don't drink too much. Alcohol content in these is insane.

Ask post: Please help me better understand repaying my student loans.
I was in almost the exact same boat as you- I left grad school in 93 and started repaying, also with a 20-yr consolidation, when my post doc ended in 1995 but I also got a 1-yr forbearance in 1997 when I emigrated to Canada. I also had about the same amount of loans as you do. Interesting.

Anyway, as of April 2006 with windfall from a sale of an investment property I paid the balance off, about $20,000(US), 10 years ahead of schedule. What I learned was that it does not... [more]

Ask post: Alternate drink to coffee/tea?
yerba mate isn't tea, it contains tons of mateine (which is the same as caffeine) and it is really hard on a lot of people. I'd avoid it if coffee gives you problems. I'm a coffee nut and I can't handle yerba.

Strictly, he says, "Marge, pour vous," and the reason it's so sweet is that she'd spent hours tutoring him in French, which was a ruse on his part to get close enough to her to ask her to the prom. Very sweet little scene, vraiment.

Ask post: Help me learn to like coffee.
I'm a coffee geek and there are some coffees, and methods of coffee preparation, that I cannot stand. But not all coffee is created equal, and part of appreciating coffee is recognising its diversity and complexity and finding a bean, roast, and brew that works for you. In all cases- ALL cases- you should use fresh (not more than a couple of weeks off the roast, and if you can't find a roast date, on the package or from the reseller, look for another bean) coffee that is ground JUST BEFORE... Seconding Goderich- walking along the escarpment is like being in California or somethin'. Really pretty and really nice beaches.

I also find North Bay pretty chill- it's quirky and surrounded by lovely scenery and lakes a plenty, and as I recall it's pretty cheap.

Ask post: Girls don't want to have fun?
Same everywhere. FWIW the only dyke I've ever known who was slutty in any way approaching the average gay man is now a FTM man. I know tons- tons and tons and tons- of gay men who have had dozens or hundreds--hell, thousands--of sex partners. I've never known a single woman, never mind a lesbian, who has remotely approached that (prostitutes don't count) except, again, for one who is now a man.

That's reality, and that's why gay men have gay bars, gay.com, squirt.org,... [more]

Ask post: House vs. apartment. Are the costs of maintaining a house roughly less, the same as, or more than levies on a comparably sized apartment?
You`re living in a fool`s paradise if you think you`re going to save money with a house relative to what you`re paying in what we call condo fees and condo assessments. When something in your house needs repair you`re 100% responsible. And the time you`ll spend doing your own yardwork (and -- here in Canada -- shovelling the damn snow) are very much worth the fees.

I was on the condo board at our former residence and it was a HUGE pain in the ass having to deal with... [more]

Ask post: Why do my eyes well up with tears when I hear something moving?
I read a piece a while ago that said that we cry at "happy endings" because we regret our own unrequited happiness. We can't have that experience unless we've actually been unhappy ourselves... I know that's only part of what you cry at, but the point is that the reason why children only cry when (for example) Bambi's mom dies or ET departs is that kids only respond to "pure" sadness and lack the biography to respond to things filmic (or whatever) that aren't specifically sad.... 3. Your profs might have some difficulty remembering you but don't be dissuaded- they have a hard time remembering anybody (I know, I'm a professor and always need some guidance in writing refs). Acetaminophen is not an anti-inflammatory.

This needs to be emphasised. Not all analgesics fight inflammation.

I ruptured my left achilles when I was 27, playing softball. I had zero tendinitis before this happened, just so you know- and my orthopedist told me that ruptures are rarely preceded by what you're experiencing. Please say "Vancouver, BC." BC, AB, SK, MB, ON, QC (or PQ), NB, NS, NF, PE, YT, NT, NV. CA is California.

Since you don't stipulate WHICH weekend, your question is impossible to answer. However I'd choose Portland over Vancouver (BC, not WA naturally) any time. Less glass, more organic, less pretentious, and way way way cheaper.

Ask post: heart health & my new diet
I don't see why you have to lose 30 to 50 lbs- in fact I can't imagine why a fit (you say you exercise regularly) man of 5'9" who weighs 185 would have to lose any weight at all. You didn't have a heart attack because you're morbidly obese and I'd suggest you get a second opinion. Nobody has a heart attack at 37 because he's basically normal weight.

Does your cardiologist say WHY he wants you to lose all this weight? Is he of the opinion that people who are... [more]

Losing 30 pounds puts him at 155, right in the middle BMI for normal weight. So again, unless you are solid muscle, lose some weight.

Being 5'9" and 185 puts him at risk of practically zero- being 37 and having a BMI of 27 might be "overweight" on that silly draconian scale, but epidemiologically it's irrelevant. Nobody is having heart attacks at 37 with a BMI that is trivially high BECAUSE of weighing 185. I'll bet that the risk at... [more]

Ask post: How do I Scare You?
Regardless of plot, villain, whatever, an essential aspect of "horror," whether in book or film versions, (for me) is that it has to make the viewer/reader feel vulnerable. I remember when I first started learning about The Ring, years before the American version, and before I got a watchable VCD of the Japanese version (the theatrical one I mean, as there have been two Japanese TV miniseries based on the original novel), I did what I saw as the only way to slake my curiosity about it,... There's nothing "American" about being loud, even stereotypically. There's hardly a single ethnic group that isn't stereotyped that way. The question is what does a fake American accent sound like?

Part of the answer: hard R's and lots of glottal stops.

Ask post: HOW DO EXPRESS TEH IDEA OF MORE TAHN ONE BEATIN' ???
Gucky, "donut" is an alternate spelling of "doughnut," not a contraction. A contraction is never pronounced exactly the same as the expression(s) it comprises. The name of the chain is, properly, "Dunkin' Donuts."

The plural if "beatin'" is "beatin's." The contraction denotes a missing letter.

I disagree that German is easier than French, spoken or written- in fact many English speakers can pick up on written French much more easily. French doesn't have "Verb am Ende," for heaven's sake.

I'd recommend studying German if you're going to be travelling a lot in Germany (or Austria, less so Switzerland) or, of course, living there. But I say this as somebody who studied German for 6 years from junior high to college, and who adores the language: I wish I... [more]

Ask post: GayDramaFilter. How can I make sure that people don't confuse my basic interest in them with flirting?
People who aren't gay are every bit as interesting as people who are. So you might start by chatting with people who aren't going to be convinced you're hitting on them, because they're not your target market (and vice versa, one would hope). Short if this, try conversing with guys whose type you're not. If you're only talking to guys who are sexually available and who are interested in you, then you're playing some sort of game and you might not even realise it. My best friendships with other... OP's problem stems from people being angry that he's "flirting" AND that he "doesn't follow through." His issue is with gay guys, not women and not straight guys, and moreover with ones who are obviously attracted to him. Hence I repeat my advice. Don't just be "friendly" and "interested" with people who are sexually interested in you. That's called being a tease.
