Ask post: I have a big monitor, help me fill it
Pro Tools. It is the reason that I wish I had a big monitor and that I covet my friend's completely insane giant LCD TV as Monitor setup.

Ask post: American Girl in Sicily
I said it in the previous thread, and it bears repeating:

Gelateria Da Ciccio on Corso Dei Mille near the train station, between Via Lincoln and Via Paolo Balsamo. It will change your life.

Oh, and Da Ciccio is in Palermo.

Ask post: Fish out of water?
In my experience, a not-terribly-liberal, meat-eating, yoga-averse Mormon cannot be happy in Logan, Utah, but that could have something to do with the fact that during the brief time that I lived there it was nothing but cowboys and deadheads, and just about nothing else. Are you a deadhead? Because if you are, and if Logan has not changed in the last 15 years, you'll be fine.

Ask post: A 27-year-old in a 29-year-old's body?
Lie about your age and one day soon you're going to look older than you say you are, which will suck. You're getting to the age where your body is soon going to start telling you you're not young anymore. The messages are subtle at first - an ache that lasts just a moment. But I recommend that you do whatever you can to feel younger than you are, not to convince yourself you're actually younger than you feel.

Ask post: tremolo controversy
The important thing is that you have a top-of-the-line hardened steel Floyd Rose, and not one of the new ones where only some parts are hardened steel. The hardened steel means better tone and, more importantly, tuning stability and reliability. If you have a hardened steel Original Floyd Rose, then setup and upkeep are easy and tuning stability is hard to beat.

The reasons that I left the Floyd Rose in favor of other bridges was because a) I wanted the true tone of a... [more]

Yep, get the glasses online to save lots of money. And sunglasses are not "the latest fashionista affectation." Rent an old Cary Grant or Audrey Hepburn movie sometime. (Though I do feel your pain re: prescription sunglasses and astigmatism -- when I wear sunglasses, I just see the world a bit darker and a bit blurrier)

Ask post: Sex is bad and work is good?
"Why do Americans continue with attitudes that other cultures consider to be outdated?"

That question isn't a good substitute for the AskMe question above, since it assumes an untrue fact (that America is somehow unique in its continuation of attitudes considered by other cultures to be outdated).

Ask post: What kind of acoustic guitar should I buy?
If you're looking to spend close to, but under, $1000 on a "rich, deep, darker sound" acoustic guitar, I would recommend a solid-top Martin dreadnought. In my experience, Mahogany tends to have nice deep sound, so I would probably pick that as the wood, rather than rosewood.

I would not go with a Taylor, as they tend to be a bit brighter and, in my opinion, don't have the warmth of a Martin.

Yeah, I have a super old, beat-up Seagull S6 that I love. I have aspired for years to replace it with a high-end Martin, but have recently gained the ability to finally do it and have found myself in the interesting position of wondering honestly whether I would rather keep the Seagull that I love.

(And I would love it if someone bought me a nice Martin without asking)

Ask post: meet the flinstones
Two reasons:

1. It's harder than pushing with your feet, and developmentally more advanced.

2. It's less efficient than pushing with your feet, and slower. So even once they figure out how to pedal, it doesn't take much to figure out that pedaling a tricycle is inferior to pushing with your feet.

Ask post: [There is rockets.] vs [There are rockets.]
If "Rockets" is the proper name of a singular thing, like a band or a team. For example, "there's Love and Rockets" would be proper, and it would be equally proper if Daniel Ash and Kevin Haskins kicked David J out of the band and changed the name to just "Rockets." Then you could say that, on the one hand, there's Love and Rockets, and on the other hand there's Rockets, and they are two different bands.

Ask post: 90 vs 60 and Bugatti vs Nissan
But, my argument (really more of a question) is that if I drove my car from, say, LA to Phoenix (375 Miles, est) at 90MPH vs 60MPH, I'd ultimately help the environment because I'd be on the road for about an hour and 40 mins less time.

Does that make up for decrease in fuel efficiency, or no?

No. CO2 production depends on how much fuel you burn. Other metrics of environmental damage are similarly tied to things other than... [more]

Get an employment lawyer. Do it now. If you cannot afford an employment lawyer, you cannot afford to do business at all, and you especially cannot afford to be sued. A good employment lawyer will be able to answer your question quickly and inexpensively. Do not accept any legal advice you receive here. If you need help finding an employment lawyer in your jurisdiction, send me a MeFiMail.

I'm about to post a message to an internet-based community blog website, in which I disagree with one of the previous posters. Do you think that I should get a lawyer, just to be on the safe side?

I don't think so, no. But if you are an employer trying to determine how to lawfully make hiring decisions and interview candidates, you should lawyer up.

More to the point, the people who cannot afford to be sued are... [more]

Ask post: Can I say goodbye to XP worry-free?
I use a PC at work and a Mac for music production at home, and I don't like the Mac. I thought that I would get used to it and eventually prefer it to the PC, but that has not been the case after more than a year of pretty consistent use. I find it clunky and not very user friendly, as well as over-complicated and counterintuitive. Won't switch back, because the Mac is a necessity for what I'm using it for, but I don't like it one bit.

Ask post: Line 6 X3 Live?
I have had a POD XT Live for a few years now. I love it -- the sound is fantastic, and it is great through an amp or for recording.

BUT: It's pretty lousy when you put it through the PA. When I have used it live (rarely), I have put it through an old Roland JC-120 to excellent effect (though you do have to tweak the POD a bit - it has output settings to adjust for what type of amp you're using). It sounds not-as-good through a PA, and there is an unacceptable feeling... [more]

Ask post: Why aren't there more pink cars?
High end cars - like Rolls-Royce, Bentley, etc., come in any color you want.

With Bentley, you can take them a sample of something that's the color you want, and they will specially make the paint to match it exactly. If you have a pink hat that you love, take it to Bentley and they will make you a car that is in the exact color of your favorite pink hat.

It doesn't come cheap, though, and that is because it is all governed by supply and demand,... [more]

My impression has been that it's not that the 9th Cir. is "liberal," but that it is the biggest circuit with the most judges and, therefore, the most opinions, and that those opinions (due to the sheer volume) are more likely than other circuits to differ and lead to a granting of cert.

When a rural area is developed, is it, by definition, becoming more urban?

Why would it be called a "windshield sensor?" It doesn't sense the windshield, isn't part of the windshield, and senses light for the headlights, which are nowhere near the windshield. Ask the dealership what the actual name of the part is, and the part number or numbers, and search for those. You can even go to the parts dept. of the dealership and buy the part directly from them if you want a genuine Mazda part.

Ask post: Should I go to law school?
So, even if you're not terribly committed to law practice, you can make it through the J.D. program without any more exertion than undergrad required.

This is true. Now, if you care about getting good enough grades to get a job that will actually pay more than a non-legal job, rather than "making it through the program," that's where the stress and commitment come in, sorry to say.

posted to Ask Metafilter by The World Famous at 4:55 PM on April 8, 2008
I think the struggle here is that I feel somebody has to be wrong, with regard to religion, and I don't want it to be me.

That somebody has to be wrong is a good assumption. The less safe assumption is that there must be some religion that is actually correct in terms of theology as well as in the eyes of God. If you're hoping to find a religion that is actually endorsed by Deity, then that's yet another question to ask -- which, if any, are... [more]
