Don't ask me!!
If a MeFite who happens also to be a lawyer advises you in an AskMe answer that you should find a lawyer to answer your question, that probably means that you really, really should find a lawyer, because there is important legal advice you need that cannot be given appropriately in AskMe.
I am not your lawyer.

How do we talk about religion and morals while respecting all beliefs?
Re: religion, if you want to respect someone's beliefs, you shouldn't make normative judgments about them. But I don't see any reason to respect beliefs. I do think that we should respect people. But that's a normative judgment on my part.
Re: morals, see above.

There are many religious beliefs that should not be respected, because those beliefs are disrespectful of others.
But that statement, itself, advocates disrespect for others. Does that mean that I shouldn't respect that belief, either? I'm so confused.

konolia, I realize this is easier said than done, but you could just not respond to those people. As a very religious person myself, I understand where you are coming from, and I really think that is the solution.

Well, World Famous, that is what I am doing.
So far they really don't like it.
Why is that a problem? They don't like what you believe, so the only way they're going to "like it" is if you change your mind. Why are you trying to make them happy? I have no problem with you or anyone else stating their beliefs if it is germane to the discussion. If someone tries to engage you in an argument about it, etc., they... [more]

it's repugnant that she considers herself a victim for having such bigoted views
Bigoted: "blindly and obstinately attached to some creed or opinion and intolerant toward others; 'a bigoted person' . . ."
I'd say there's more than a little of that going around.

I keep forgetting that being intolerant of bigotry is a bad thing.
I think maybe you missed the point. On second thought, though, I suspect that you actually got the point.

The difference, konolia, is that dnab does not consider belief in reincarnation to be a bigoted belief, in that it is not a belief that ascribes a negative normative or moral value to those who either do not believe in it or who act contrary to that belief. I may be off base here (and I'm sure dnab will correct me if I am), but the issue is that dnab thinks that your beliefs are, in part, an unfair and incorrect negative judgment against other people.
A better analogy... [more]

Flapjax are unholy in the sight of the Sun, silly. They must only be eaten at precisely midnight.
And a badger isn't actually a bear with a funny hat. It's a completely different animal. I have no evidence to back this up, so I suspect that chrisamiller will now call me an idiot, or something.

I'm not sure I will ever understand people who believe that man is supposed to tell God what to do and God will just jump right to it.
But I'm not going to follow them around the site and call them bigots.

Believe whatever the hell you want, but don't try to shove it down our throats as truth.
But if she believes it, that means she believes that it is truth. It's sort of silly to ask her to pretend that it's not when she undisputedly believes that it is. If she can't say that something is "truth," then no one else can, either.*
*except me, of course, because what I believe really is the truth.

If you're going to state your beliefs about who is or is not "saved," (particularly if they are clearly wrong), you really should state them as your beliefs, and not as if they are facts. Sheesh.

FFF, there is a difference between misunderstanding theology and being fraudulent.
And what is that difference?
As I understand it, the difference between a misrepresentation and fraud is intent to induce reliance to the detriment of another (at least in my jurisdiction).

If you ARE wearing a suit, a good hat will make the difference between looking good, and looking sharp.
Nonsense. If you are wearing a suit, which I do on a very regular basis, any hat will make you look like you're wearing a costume, instead of dressing appropriately. And if you show up somewhere that a suit is the appropriate attire and you're wearing a hat, don't be surprised when someone says "hey, you look sharp!" That person is... [more]

I just spend a lot of time wearing nice suits around lots of other people in suits, and if one of them was wearing a fedora, I would giggle a bit.
