Has any democracy, in a free, fair and open election, ever chosen a racial minority as a head of state or head of government?

Help me celebrate the birth of my nephew today. I'd like ideas on cool memorabilia that later on he can have to remember this day.

Where can I buy cheap DVD DL (double-layer) discs, and what's the cheapest price that you've found (either on-line or in a store)? It doesn't matter if they are - or +.

Does everyone who gets arrested have a mugshot taken of them, and must all mugshots be released to the public? Are there any restrictions on their use?

I'm looking for some examples of popular movies that cast technology, specifically networking technology, in a good (or at the very least a non-paranoid) light.

I know that the RIAA has sued users of certain P2P networks like Kazaa, with mixed results. I'd like to know if there are any other examples of companies or agencies suing individuals for alleged copyright infringement...(like maybe the MPAA going after people on BitTorrent or something.)

I recently found out that
Shakespeare based Romeio and Juliet on Arthur Brooke's Tragical History of Romeus and Juliet. What are some other examples of artists (both modern and historical) "borrowing" or "sampling" from other artists? I'm interested in any kind of art: writing, painting, musical composition, etc... [MI]

My parents recently gave me $400 as a present, with the express condition that I use it to buy something (which means I can't save or invest it). Originally, they were going to get me an iPod, but I already have one. I'm thinking about a digital camera, so my question is: Does anyone have any suggestions for a good camera, or perhaps some other neat electronic gadget, in this price range?

Sure, we all know the story about how Detroit developed, and then kept under wraps, a 100mpg carburetor is
false. However, affordable 80mpg family sedans
are real: behold the
Supercar! They are the results of a nearly decade-long partnership between
The Big Three and the Clinton administration. However the program was quietly shelved last June, the victim of the Bush administration, and corporate backpedaling. Read the whole sordid tale
here.
[use username/password for login] In the meantime, you'll have to settle for one of
these.

It starts with Delaware... Over at Google Answers, a Microsoft Games Studio employee has posted a most interesting puzzle to solve. Over the course of the last twenty
months a list of states has been gradually revealed by his boss, but under what criteria are they listed? He's giving $200.00 to the winner; just think of
what you could
buy. The fine folks at the
Straight Dope are already on the case. To the Googlemobile! [via

Wow.
Three double-posts in a
row. Nothing new in and of itself, but this makes me wonder if MetaFilter could implement a FilePile type icon based system for marking double posts. (Inside: I will try and explain myself)

Take that Meatfilter.com...
On Monday, Oct. 1, the FTC plans to announce the beginning of a campaign against scores of Web sites that capitalize on typo variants of popular domain names in order to dupe unsuspecting Internet surfers.
I think this is a good thing, but how far can the US government truly influence shady internet practices? Should it even try?

...the Terrorist Deportation Plan can't wait.
There will be two fail-safes: (1) Muslim immigrants who agree to spy on the millions of Muslim citizens unaffected by the deportation order can stay; and (2) any Muslim immigrant who gets a U.S. senator to waive his deportation -- by name -- gets to stay......

Best. Auction. Ever.
Check out the details
here. Basically, the Scottish whisky makers Chivas Regal is auctioning off 450 "lots" of some of the coolest and most unobtainable things ever: like an audience with the Pope, and performing with the Moscow State Circus. Which would you choose?(via
