Ask post: why are the sippy cups wet?
I thought I remember a teacher explaining that plastic is hydrophilic, whereas glass and porcelain are hydrophobic. The water molecules don't cling to glass the way they cling to plastic. I don't think temperature has anything to do with it, since everything (glass and plastic) reaches about the same temperature during the wash cycle.

MeFi post: Art you can really get hung up on
I've seen the spaceman before in a gallery. You know how the footage of astronauts walking on the moon is grainy and fuzzy? The hangers give it that fuzzy look, only in real life. Definitely one of my favorite pieces that I've ever seen.

Ask post: Does not compute.
Try wiggling the heatsink on the processor. If it's a little loose, take it off and add some thermal grease to it, then replace. Also, consider a big after-market heatsink with attached heat pipes and a fan. Check out the Zalman brand. They've got lots of models depending on how much space you have in your case.

Ask post: Old guy walks into a bar...
This company is making a device for triathletes to carry around during a race. I don't think they've officially launched yet, but I've talked to a few athletes who've used them as beta testers at races and it seems really promising.

It's mainly used for family members to be able to locate their athlete during a 10+ hour race. "Oh, Johnny's at mile 45 on the bike according to my phone's browser, so we can go grab lunch and then drive to that spot where we can see... [more]

Ask post: Sucky Pedal Disengagement
I never really liked Shimano SPD pedals, but I love Speedplay. Check out the Speedplay Light Action series, which take a little less force to get in and out.

It sounds to me like you're just not used to them yet, plus you said that it looks like the cleat wasn't aligned on the shoe properly. It's possible that they shifted, and if so, that'll definitely prevent you from unclipping. Speedplay are extremely easy to set up on a shoe.... [more]

Hey there kuperman, we graduated high school in the same class.

Seconding Monjuni's for Italian. Murrell's, George's, Strawn's and Joe's are greasy spoon diners (George's is better, but the other two are open 24 hours). Amon Tobin uses samples similar to that, with this complicated, layered Brazilian thing underneath it. It's a lot more electronic sounding than the Mad Men theme, but it's got similar drums.

Here's an update: After spending 15 days in jail, his wife was able to pull some resources together to pony up $5,000 for a lawyer. That lawyer talked to the judge that day, and the day after that he walked out of jail. The lawyer is apparently baffled as to why the probation officer is being such a hardass about the situation, but has advised my friend to knock out as many community service hours as possible between now and his court date, which is in a week or so.... Ask post: I'm 24 and can't swim- Is there a 20-somethings swim class in NYC?
I grew up in the water (competitive water skiing family), and when I got into triathlon a couple of years ago I thought I'd have no problem. Holy shit, that was a rude awakening. It turns out those 20+ years of water skiing really just taught me "not drowning", and not "swimming from point A to B with a balance of speed and efficiency", which is what it's really all about.

I never took a swimming lesson as an adult (but I really, really should have),... [more]

Ask post: Why doesn't it hurt so good?
Absolutely. I'm rarely sore from cycling, and I bike a lot. Maybe that's why I'm rarely sore. I'd say there's definitely gain without pain, especially on long endurance rides where my goal is to keep my heart rate below a specific threshold for the entire ride.

Ask post: 10k Preparation
What's your goal here? Just to finish your first 10k? To run the whole time? Finish under 1:30?

If it's just to finish, then yeah, you'll be able to do it. Use the Hal Higdon plan linked above (I've used other Higdon plans with success), and don't be afraid to walk when you need to.

Whatever you do, don't push yourself too hard too soon. You'll soon get to a point where you feel like you can run 10 miles, and sure, you could finish a slow 10... [more]

Ask post: What type of bike should I get for pulling a trailer?
I've got a trailer for my kid and we loooourve it. Any modern hybrid or low-end mountain bike will work. I personally use a road bike.

If you're relatively new to cycling, go with something that has a 32-tooth cog on the back. That's a pretty low gear, and low gears will be nice when you get to a hill, you're starting from a stop, or the wind starts blowing.

Ants will not eat your sandwiches if you store them in Tupperware. If Tupperware is too heavy or bulky, ants will not find you sandwich if you store it in a high quality (name brand) zip-loc bag. Red beans and rice? Super yummy, good even if you eat it cold (ditto for pizza), and you can store it in a plastic bag, or even better, a Tupperware bowl.

Ask post: Should we use a doula?
We used a midwife for our home birth. In case we had to transfer to a hospital, the plan was that our midwife would then become our doula. We've had lots of friends use doulas in the hospital, and from what I hear it's overwhelmingly positive (one doctor was fiercely arguing for an immediate c-section, the doula intervened, the baby was delivered naturally without a problem other than a longer labor, which was inconvenient for the hospital staff).

If you have a birth... [more]

People are going to think I'm a shill because I've recommended it in 2 or 3 threads now, but TrainingPeaks.com receives data from the Forerunner 305, shows where you ran on a map, elevation, hear rate, time spent in each heart rate zone, pace, calories, total distance on various pairs of shoes, etc. It also tracks nutrition really well.

Ask post: Is it safe to use a step-down transformer with a Hair Styler?
Speaking from personal experience, a coworker of mine in India had a "flat iron" which I think is similar to a hair straightener. It was purchased in the US and used in India, which I think uses 220V. Even though it was plugged into an transformer, the metal plates melted off the handle, and the thing died. She said that it was the best 20 minutes of hair straightening she had ever experienced, however.

It could be that her transformer just wasn't built to... [more]

Agreed that TP can seem overwhelming at first, especially the nutrition logger. I've only played with their beta version (they're in the process of upgrading the whole site to a more "2.0" look and feel), and it does seem easier to use, but I've been using TP for about a year now, so maybe I'm just used to it.

I'm familiar with Friel's method, and I used his method to develop a training plan to train for a tri. Muscular endurance was my limiter, but I don't... [more]

My high school didn't have a football, basket ball, or track team. We did, however, have a kick-ass debate team. They were the jocks at the school, picking intellectual fights with other kids, completely derailing in-class discussions with their tactics. It would not surprise me at all to know they now roam the halls of MetaFilter.

Experimenting with McDonald's fry grease was the occupational pastime of my first job. Sure, the under-3 toy (Sonic the Hedgehog plastic ball) was pretty interesting to see deep-fried, but if you want some real action, just pour a 32-oz cup of ice water in there. Make sure you stand back after you do; it takes about three or four seconds to see the performance start.

Covered in sweat after 4 miles? Hm.....

If it's super hot where you're located, you're in luck! It's cooling off (if you're in the Northern hemisphere) and that'll definitely help with the sweat.

Are you wearing a backpack? Even on the coolest days, even when I take it easy, I'll still arrive with a sweaty back if I'm carrying a backpack. If you absolutely have to carry stuff with you when you ride, consider getting a rack so that your bike... [more]

As Zed mentioned, a recumbent would do you well here (and they're faster on the flats!). A triathlon or time trial bike might be comfortable for you as well, as (if you're fitted properly) your upper body is resting on your skeletal system, and not your musculature system. There are various types of areo bars, from the type that look like ski poles to S-bends and R-bends, and you could try those to see what's most comfortable for your wrists. I fenced competitively for six years. If you want to fence once or twice a week, that's fine. If you want to make it a lifetime sport, that's great too. It can work either way.

You're definitely not past the prime of learning to fence. Anyone can do it. It's an extremely aerobic and tactical sport, like boxing or martial arts, with more emphasis on speed, agility, reflexes and skill, and less on brute strength.

Ask post: Weeing and cycling - what up?
Also in the Tour de France, it's an unspoken tradition to not attack during a bourgeois naturale. This means if the peloton (the main pack of riders) stops to pee, courtesy dictates that you don't decide that this is the most strategic moment to start hauling ass off the front. It might be a good idea tactically, but it's simply not done, and definitely won't win you any favors in the cycling world.
