Cops on Segways
Every Saturday and Sunday there's a Segway parade right by my house. There are Segway tours in my city (Austin), and they use my street to get across the interstate. Everyone is riding politely, wearing their helmet, thrilled beyond belief at the fact that they're riding an actual Segway, while trying to understand what the hell the tour guide is shouting to them regarding the moonlight towers.
Every weekend morning. Like clockwork. Segway parade. My two-year old... [more]

Bozo the Clown dead at 83
My friend Rob was on the Bozo show when he was a kid, maybe seven years old. He has the tape to prove it. On the show he competed in a game where he and a teammate held each end of a plank, and another teammate stacked blocks on the plank. They got about five or six blocks high before they tumbled. When this happened, the camera happened to be zoomed right in on Rob. You couldn't hear what Rob said, because there's no mic on him, and there's about a billion screaming kids in the audience,... The Bicycle Tutor
I'd like to see a threadless headset overhaul. He's working on a Kuwahara, which is the same brand of bike I used to race BMX. Mine's currently in my grandmother's attic, and will be overhauled when my toddler is ready for it.

Before Roe vs. Wade.
My best friend has worked at two womens' clinics where abortions were performed (along with prescribing birth control and other OB/GYN procedures). She was the director of one clinic. One of her duties was to counsel women wanting an abortion, so that they have 24 hours to decide if they really want to do this (what other medical procedure requires a 24-hour waiting period?).
She often had stories of women who proclaimed that abortion was wrong, it shouldn't be legal,... [more]

Go real fast.
I'm curious to know what kind of wheels and bearings this thing uses. The Wikipedia article on it doesn't say, but I'm guessing some kind of metal wheel? Ceramic bearings? The driver's account says that the wheels can be under ten tons of downforce, which is just insane. What's the gas mileage like?

Remembering 10-Cent Beer Night
Any rumination on Cleveland's fortunes in the '70s must include the woeful state of the Cuyahoga River, which ran a winding course through downtown. In 1952, it caught fire for the ninth time. Years and years of absorbing liberal amounts of industrial waste had turned the Cuyahoga into something more than just a waterway. The fetid river burned with Stygian fury, destroying $1.5 million in property. Despite the significance of the incident, it didn't attract much national news coverage.... [more]

Ghost Bottle: No Maintenance Required
DAMN! I was seriously going to put this up on ebay, but mine was better. You see, I was going to have a good spirit inside a bottle, and that bottle would be wholly contained within a bigger bottle. The catch? The big bottle contains an evil spirit. How do you get the good spirit out without also releasing the evil spirit? Fuck if I know, but I was really interested to see how much I'd get for it. I really need to stop procrastinating with this stuff and get it done.

Which eye is the carb hole?
Alas, poor Yorick! I knew him,
Horatio. A fellow of infinite herb, of most excellent fancy. He
hath borne me in his sack a thousand times. And now how abhorred
in my imagination it is! My smoke rises at it. Here hung those
lips that I have carb'd I know not how oft. Where be your shake now? your bowl? your flame? your flashes of merriment that
were wont to set the table on a roar? Not one now, to mock your
own coughing?... [more]

Playsforsuren't
I don't have highly refined legal skillz, but isn't the company breaking their agreement here? I'm guessing when the consumer purchased the license, they were promised that they could play the song on multiple (3? 5?) systems. Now that the servers validating these licenses are shutting down, consumers are not going to be able to play the song on a different computer. It seems that the consumer has paid for a service that they're not receiving.
Maybe the EULA says... [more]

"an expression of truckliness"
When I see stuff like this I just want to misappropriate the fuck out of it. People who mod their cars? Well I wanted to put a huuuuuge spoiler on the back of my car, one on the roof, and one on the hood. I'm talking like five feet tall, maybe with multiple wings like a bi-plane.
When I see these on the road I just want to put an enormous vagina on the hood of my car. Labia majora peeled all the way back to my doors. Maybe I could rig up my wiper pump to route... [more]

The curious habits of the Mall Ninja
I know this guy, or at least his doppleganger who annoyed the shit out of everyone on this local climbing forum. My favorite story of his involved being contracted to take out this sleeper cell in San Antonio. At "go time" they found out the cell had split town, so now he's just waiting for the phone call. Wow.

Just Like Rudy if He Had Been a Bike Wheel
Wow, that's awesome. I'd give my right leg for a set of Zipp 404s, and my other leg for a Cervelo SLC-SL. I wouldn't be able to ride at that point, and I'd probably wish for the days when I had two legs, a Specialized Allez, and a set of Mavic Open Pros.
I read the forums at SlowTwitch.com a lot and "Josh at Zipp" continually gives kick ass customer service. Zipps are expensive, but worth it (or so I hear from all the people trying... [more]

cog_nate, almost any wheel would have buckled in that crash. The rider has the wheel turned slightly at the moment of impact, so the wheel folds like that. I ride aluminum rims (Mavic Open Pro...heavy but extremely durable) and have destroyed them crashing into a curb. Had the rider plowed straight into the dog, that might not have happened.
Two dogs took out riders in the '07 Tour, here's the second.
