We've got a network - let's use it!
Since there aren't enough success stories posted in this thread: I've posted to MeFi and had tons of GREAT responses, quickly (and repeatedly) hiring a bunch of talented MeFites for non-tech-type writing gigs. MeFi is now my go-to place when I need excellent, snarky, savvy people. So hang in there, there's hope for Jobs yet!

loiseau, I'm so sorry! I tried to at least reply to everyone but I got a ton of responses (I guess there's an indication that gig-type jobs are in demand) even after I'd filled the positions, and I must have missed you. My apologies!

Dave Faris, that was my first thought too! We had no idea what our numbers were as we went, or TRUST ME I would have done at LEAST one more.

I'd be all for front-tagging or tag-review (mostly because now I'm selfishly desperate for another huge mind-numbing but strangely fascinating project to do while I watch Tivo) although it does have some implications - ie overwriting FPPs tags for "better" ones is different than adding tags to an untagged post.
That said, there are some crappy recent tags out there... it's like an itch... must... scratch...
btw, yay CMKmtl! I thought I... [more]

UbuRoivas, only 1,091 posts were TAGGED "usa." "America" "unitedstates" were also probably used, and lots of American-centric politics posts weren't tagged with any country identifier, but instead with "recount" "georgebush" etc. It's still better than nothing, but don't draw too many definitive conclusions yet.
FWIW, in my (limited, random, "give me 10 more") experience, ancient MeFi history was VERY America-centric.

In related feature requests, is there any way to see a tally of how many each of us have tagged? I think the competition might be... motivating.

(Sssh, don't tell, but you can be selective and skip some if one topic starts dragging you down. With 20,000+ every little bit helps, I'm guessing!)

If it helps, Jessamyn advised that I tag the ones I found with "brokenlink" but not to worry too much about it, and that it wasn't necessary to click on every one to see if it was broken or not. After doing this for a while now, I can see why. Most of the time, the comments and discussion - not just the link - are still worth tagging so the topic can be found by a few good keywords.
Another thing that helps is seeing that new posts (where tags are required)... [more]

Further testament to the fact that I have reached the End of the Internet (and still with a lot of surfing time on my hands), and Metafilter is the only thing that's there.
Seriously, it's just as much fun as surfing Wikipedia or any other truly "webbed" site. Following links that you wouldn't otherwise follow, checking stuff out... what's not to love about backtagging?
And yet I am totally embarrassed at that number. Today, I'm going to take a walk instead.

Back-Taggers, Back to Work!
I recently joined the backtagging team, and am finding it's a fun way to re-explore MeFi. Napster, the browserwars, Star Wars prequels... good ole days all.
Anyway, just a few minutes ago, the team broke 16,000 unflagged MeFi posts! As of right now, the tally is this:
MeFi: 15,967 untagged posts. | 17,596 tagged so far.
AskMeFi: 0 untagged posts. | 9,426 tagged so far.

Oh, I think it was just a browser-loading weirdness. Rather than the page title ("10 Random Untagged Posts"), that designation showed up under the tally on the right, in small font. Anyway, it's fixed. As you were.
