MeFi post: "No, Miss Vega. Consider the Black Box theory!"
Civil_Disobedient: Yeah? More news for the kids on my lawn:

Kid Rock's "All Summer Long" is an almost note-for-note rip-off of Warren Zevon's Werewolves of London.

To the lawn-owner, from a kid: "All Summer Long" may sample the 1977 "Werewolves of London" for additional melody, but the song you're looking for for the 'rip-off' came out three years before, in 1974. It's even... [more]

Here's (almost) the original video - the original is linked in the description.

MeFi post: God Save The Thief -- Sex Pistols vs. Wolfmother
Eh. I'm not a fan of The Illuminoids. Their (his?) only good track is Dead Mongolian Loser (Beck, Devo, and Bauhaus); the rest are just sloppy.

Mashups as a genre previously, with many examples in the comments.

(a note to the h4t3rz above: don't judge a genre by its mediocre artists.)... [more]

I argue that the posting of that link is more my right than yours, seeing as it's my post. *crosse arsms*

Also, both God Save The Queen and Joker And The Thief have been mashed before with much better results.

Girl Talk is awesome. Here's a concert of his, here's him making a song, and here's a video for Summer Smoke, one of the tracks off of his album Night Ripper.

MeTa post: Why do people make a post to say they've sent a mefi mail?
It's because most people don't check their mail frequently and it's easy to miss the alert.

If I had my way, everyone would use my script (or said script's functionality would be implemented server-side) and this wouldn't be a problem.

MeTa post: BragFilter
Popular opinion says that this megapost on mashups is my best thing, but I feel that I could have prepared much more and linked to three times as many artists now.

My favorite posts of mine would be a tie between two interview posts: "George Clooney Meets The Internet" and "Rick Astley Talks About Being Internet Famous." I hate celebrity news usually, but both interviews really showed a great side of the interviewee.... [more]

MeFi post: Free MMOs to devour your free time
I'm seconding exactly what Pope Guilty said. KoL's a great game and I played the hell out of it before I lost interest in playing.
posted to MetaFilter by flatluigi at 2:35 PM on May 21, 2008
rifflesby: If it's been a while since you last played KoL, you might consider joining up again -- about a year ago we pushed the Naughty Sorceress quest two levels later and added a slew (a slew, I tell you) of new content.

I lost interest about the third time I was playing through the long added quest. It might have been because it was new and I wasn't familiar with it, but I just didn't really feel like doing all that stuff over... [more]

Ask post: Mash-up making 101?
drezdn: Major issues for me:
-How can I isolate vocals?
-Do I need to pay attention to the key of pieces, and if so, is there an easy (software) way to figure it out?
-Is there an easy way to figure out the Beats-per-minute of a piece?

1) I'd use the free VST plugin kn0ck0ut or drop $0.90 on the better Extra Boy. Most of the time, though, you just get the pieces of the tracks from elsewhere. Acapellas4u is a great... [more]

MeTa post: Return of the Return of the MeFi Music Challenge
I'd definitely like a few categories because there were a few suggestions I'd like to see.

I think having "use this word as your theme," "use this phrase in your song," and "create something with this style/sample" would be nice categories.

I'm shooting off something in the vein of the third right now.

MeFi post: You are getting sleepy. . .
I love Derren Brown. I doubt the methods he tells us he uses are the methods he actually does, but it provides a good show.

Here's Wikipedia's description of a program he had called The System:

The System, a Channel 4 special in which Brown shared his "100 per cent guaranteed" method for winning on the horses, was first shown on February 1, 2008.

The show was based around the idea that a system

MeFi post: Smashing Magazine celebrates Pixel Art
ErWenn: For me, the reason it's pixel art is that it's done pixel by pixel. All the shading is done by hand by changing the colors of every pixel that needed to be dark. There's no brushwork or any "shortcuts."

I'd say this is pixel art.

I was misremembering it a bit. There's no setup details, however, and it used $2000 worth of equipment circa 2003. So, it's possible, but I don't know how hard it'd be.

MeFi post: We see a man and woman kiss
A scene of a storm at sea with a drowning, and a another storm with a near drowning. A man hits another man in the backside with his briefcase. People are nearly hit by vehicles a few times. A car drives through a fire. A group of men overpower another man. A woman threatens a man with a grater and a man pushes a woman around. A man punches a wall. A man has a bruise on his face. Scuffles, chases, falls, reckless driving.

Any guesses?

Ask post: mp3 or aif?
MP3s are more widely-compatible; aiffs are uncompressed and therefore are better-quality. Aiffs are larger than MP3s. It all depends on how much storage space you need, whether your player of choice supports aiffs, and whether sound quality is important to you.
