Will XP soon be going the way of the Caribbean monk seal?
Perhaps you should post the specs of the system you're going to buy.
There is still a lot of "Vista Bad, XP good" going on, and while not baseless, it's not nearly as bad as it used to be with the advent of Vista SP1.
I run Vista 64 SP1 on my built from scratch gaming rig and have had absolutely no problems whatsoeverIf you are interested in games, Vista will be the future as it's the only OS to support DirectX 10. Drivers are mature... [more]

Find a Linux/Unix/Mac box and:

Where yourdevice is the device name of the SD card (try running the mount command to find it)

God, Hot Shots 1&2 are full of them if I understand you correctly...
Topper Harley: I could never find time for love. It's too heavy. It's an anchor that drowns a man. Besides, I got the sky, the smell of jet exhaust, my bike.
Pete 'Dead Meat' Thompson: Ahh, a loner...
Topper Harley: No. I own it.
Sheesh. Check out the quotes page.

My house of (network) cards has tumbled
Well, I've found pfSense which looks like it may fit the bill - and run on my WRAP! Cool.
However, I can't find any confirmation on UPnP support but there's a lot of noise about it, mostly outdated mailing list/forum discussions. Also, no clue about it's performance on the WRAP even though it's forked from m0n0wall.
Anybody had any experience with pfSense? Specifically on an embedded platform?

Hi All, thanks for the replies.
Firstly, doowod, thanks for the suggestion but I'm in New Zealand and unfortunately I can't seem to source that Buffalo unit anywhere, although that looks like a great little box...
I did look into the WRT54G(L) but I already have a few 802.11G access points - it might just be best to ditch my Wireless N requirements (and my Belkin) until it is ratified and some stable products come out supporting it but for now... [more]

Hi All,
Just an update - had some problems with pfSense + WRAP, it seems the router/firewall was too strict, or the UPnP was faulty and it caused problems with multiple gaming consoles. Will have to find another use for that little thing :)
I did have a good look around for that Buffalo unit you mentioned doowod but I couldn't find it anywhere in NZ or Australia...
Instead, I got my grubby mitts on a WRT54GL and installed... [more]

Questions about PSP modding (via Pandora's Battery)
Yes, PSN downloads work fine on the M33 firmware. The PC downloading software sucks, but they said that they are releasing a web store shortly similar to the PS3 one.
M33 firmwares can now automatically update themselves using the Network Update app, and you can install stock Sony firmware any time you want.

I miss Quake 3
Just announced at GDC (Game Developers Conference): Quake Live.
Not to mention, all the Quake games run natively on Intel Mac (Windows & Linux too) because id software open source their game engines. Not sure if anybody still plays it online these days but maybe Quake Live will start up some more interest...
Also, Unreal Tournament 3 runs on Mac I believe - maybe worth a look. It's brand new, looks fantastic, it's not quake but with that... [more]

Help me redirect my old URLs
If that wordpress plugin doesn't work out for you, you might have to create your own rules using ModRewrite. Make sure your host supports Modrewrite and your .htaccess is enabled.
Note: there are probably already rules enabled to allow the clean urls provided by wordpress in the first place, you might just have to add some new ones.

AmbroseChapel: It's a map and a bunch of check boxes. The checkboxes show/hide semi-transparent "layers" on top of the map. Both the map and the layers exist as PNG files with alpha channels.
This is fine. It works and it's fast. I can hide/show layers with the tickboxes.
The client has just asked for a way to export a file from it, with the selected layers, to give to clients and I'm stuck... Just wondering if anyone had invented this... [more]

Nokia N95: is it better than a stick in the eye?
If you want the N95 - you definitely want the American version. The other versions (vanilla, 8gb) do not function on America's 3G HSDPA frequency which keeps you at 2G/EDGE... severely limiting the usefulness of all those flashy multimedia features!
I had the option of getting an N95, price wasn't really an issue as it was being paid for by my company. However, I ended up getting an E65 - less flashy but a lot nicer looking, lighter, smaller and fits my needs fine... [more]

Pipe command output, but keep the error code
Have you tried this:
# my_cmd_that_fails; RET_VAL=$? | postprocessor_that_succeds; echo $RET_VAL
You can then access $RETURN within that command. If you need to access it later use the export command:
# my_cmd_that_fails; export RET_VAL=$? | postprocessor_that_succeeds
# echo $RET_VAL

Time machine only works on HFS+ formatted partitions unfortunately.
I also haven't seen a FireWire 2.5" enclosure - perhaps it has to do with the power required to run the drive that only USB provides?
I think the biggest size 2.5" drive you're likely to find within the realm of affordability is ~250gb.
So, if you split that in half for a 125gb partition for Time Machine and a 125gb FAT formatted for sharing... [more]

How about the HTC S730?
Has everything on your list except GPS.
Has got a slide-out qwerty keyboard, HSDPA (not sure how useful that is on T-Mob...), WiFi, 2megapixel camera. Based on WM6 with some custom HTC interface (home screen) on it. Decent processor so shouldn't be too laggy either.

How do I re-assign buttons on my Nokia?
Hi Oktober,
I believe that the N75 may come with the S60 "Active Standby" feature enabled by default. That allows you to have an upcoming calander/mail view and 5 icons along the top in a row which you can navigate with the direction pad and launch with the center button.
To enable the feature you're looking for you need to DISABLE "Active Standby". Try looking in: Menu -> Tools -> Settings -> Phone -> Standby Mode... [more]

Help me test the waters with Google Apps
If you're testing, do NOT change the MX record or the destination (if it's a CNAME) for your domain until you're ready to switch. You will have problems with your mail if you do that.
Have a look at this page: How can I test the email service before changing my MX records?. And furthermore 5-step Test & Switch Guide. Hope those links work, but good luck and post back if you have any other problems!... [more]

Also, if you're adding a CNAME record to point to ghs.google.com that is only for adding aliases in your own domain to point to the different services. e.g. docs.domain.com, calendar.domain.com, docs.domain.com etc... So it's for making mail.domain.com take the user to the gmail mail interface for your domain.
This does not affect mail handling, the MX records are for that but just make sure you don't CNAME the target for the MX or you might have trouble.

In any case it's not really any of their business so lie, tell the truth, make up a giant story about how you got them from hunting down nosey people who don't mind their own P's & Q's.

Rinsing your hands with water while rubbing them on stainless steel (try your sink) will remove stinky garlic smell. Some stores even sell a little soap-bar sized stainless steel "nugget" you can use to wash your hands.
I was skeptical at first but it works!
