Ask post: Where to feed and entertain children in Toronto
For the restaurant suggestions, you might want to check out the Chowhound forums for GTA Toronto. I've seen a few family orientated threads before so there might be some finds.

(And when I was a kid, I thought Ontario Place, ROM and the AGO were all great places.)

Ask post: Proper Lasagna consists of RED & WHITE sauce, not PINK.
dobbs My lasange is of the raw, vegan variety and is quite visually appealing. It's a wonderful summer dish! However, the white and red parts never get heated so never become runny and are as thick at serving time as I made them during prep. If you're open to trying such a dish (I'd put it head-to-head with any lasagne I've ever tasted), let me know and I'll post the recipe.

I'm not Mutant but I'm interested in your vegan lasagna.... [more]

Ask post: Name That Tune/Video (Center)
I like the suggestions Amphitheatre and Appleseed.

Easy enough to be in pretty much everyone's vocabulary but also unique enough to create an identity. Seriously, all my favourite Mac programs follow the same philosophy and I think it works well.

Ask post: My elbow makes noise. What?
No pain whatsoever but I guess it could very well be my form. Thanks for the reassurances and suggestions!

(That it to say, I'll keep at it and also use my camera to make sure I'm in proper form.)

How do I add the TED talks to my iTunes as a podcast feed?

Ask post: Help me decide between a PC or a MAC
I have a Mac mini too and it's great for casual use. Compared to the PC at work, it feels just as responsive and capable. The only time it slows down is with CoverFlow and Spaces Expose in Leopard.

It's small, draws only 30 watts of power from the wall and only slightly audible from a metre away. The only immediate downside I see is that I don't think it can drive monitors larger than 22 inch at native resolution.

Also, just note that the Mac... [more]

Ask post: Where are people going now that Oink is gone?
Canadian IPs are banned from Demonoid anyways. Not that I would know.

Ask post: ItunesFilter: Help me manage myout of control library file.
Are there iTunes alternatives for us OSX users with large libraries?

Ask post: Help me pick an alias
I just want to say as a Canadian with English as a second language and as someone that has never heard of Ani DiFranco before, I would pronounce Ani the same way I would pronounce the first two syllables of the word animation.

If Any is pronounced the way I think it is, then Ani isn't quite way and Ahni or Ahnni is more close.

Ask post: Auto tagging MP3s based on a textfile
mp3tag will also do this. In fact, if all you want to do is replace underscores with spaces in your tags, mp3tag can do that too. Also can rename the actual file based on the tag values (however you like).

Ask post: SQL Combinations
Here's a naive approach at it (programmaticaly):

1. Construct a node for every valid member.
2. Construct a lookup table that points to all those nodes.
3. For every valid pairing of members, lookup the nodes and add a pointer (edge) to each other.

4. a) Optimise space: to determine if {1,2,3} is valid, look at each member and check for a pointer to another member in that set. If there is a member that has no... [more]

Ask post: Where can I get free or cheap coin sorting in Toronto?
I can also vouch that TD will frown upon you bringing in a big jar of coins. They require you to deposit coinage in those cardboard tubes you get for cheap at the dollar store. Though, last time I deposited some $300+ in coins, I didn't get charged any fee (and it was definitely more than eight rolls).

Why not spend a few evenings putting them into cardboard tubes yourself? It's kind of fun in a McScrooge way to line up your coins and realise how much you have saved up.

Ask post: How instant is a Twitter update?
Seeing as no one has answered your question yet, I'll throw in my experience with sending a message from a Canadian number. I'm on Rogers in Toronto and it took me pretty much a day, give or take a few hours, to have my messages show up on Twitter.

This was a few months ago when I tried out Twitter for a few weeks so things might have changed. The quickest was half a day and the latest was 30 hours I think. It could've just been Rogers -- SMS isn't that big here.

Ask post: LifestyleDesignFilter - Is the Four Hour Work Week Feasible?
I have neither read the book or a back-of-the-book summary. So what is the purported difference between those who conform to a 9 to 5 lifestyle and those who go out to make it 2 to 4?

Ask post: Audio help...
In MPC, go to Options.
In the Audio Switcher pane, enable the built-in audio switcher. Map back-left and back-right to front-left and front-right respectively.

Alternatively, while the video is opened, right click and look at the contents of the filters submenu. Choose whatever filter is acting as the audio decoder. When the properties window opens, find the option to down-mix. If it's ffdshow audio, it's in the Mixer pane.

Ask post: iTunes is sucking
A bit late but I think Amarok is pretty much your only option and even then it's not lightning fast. It seems like a lot of people are satisfied with iTunes so there isn't much effort in developing an alternative.

I'm hoping Songbird will eventually come around like how we got Firefox from Mozilla.

Ask post: switch from pc to mac
I have to go against the wind here about the 'smooth-sailing' switch to Apple. I'm happy I switched but it was pretty difficult for me.

I consider myself an advance PC user: my first PC only had DOS 6 and fun time was that gorilla game in QBASIC. someone came along later and installed Windows 3.1 for me and I had Solitaire, after Win3.11 + Win32s I had FreeCell and I was happy. Just before I switched to Apple, I was running Win2K with Litestep, cygwin, WindowBlinds,... [more]

kirkaracha

Sorry when I meant bust, I meant that as in the alternatives weren't quite there yet and not as in there are no alternatives.

Taking the video player example, VLC simply works a lot better than the alternatives.

MPlayer (GUI version not the CLI version) lacks basic options like changing the audio or subtitle track. It also seems to be worst than VLC at decoding x264 videos, I often had... [more]

Most Firefox plugins work on the Mac, only a handful don't. Userchrome.css, usercontent.css, etc. work as well.

Ask post: Disposal of non-usable CDs
I live in Toronto so unfortunately, US based groups like Earth911 and Green Citizen are not as helpful. hazel's link to freecycle has a few Toronto communities though so I'll hoping someone will want a few hundred CDs for craft supplies.

I considered making some crafts with them but I simply have too many CDs I want to be rid of. (Incidentally, I have the sudden need to dispose of a few hundred CDs because I just went through spring cleaning and have been trying to... [more]

Ask post: Let's say directing air traffic seems a lot less boring than my current job
Wow, lots of good answers. Thanks everyone for replying.

To be honest, the major downside to me seems to be the shifts and the fail rate of the training. It kind of sucks thinking the year spend training might be for nothing.

To those who have seriously considered being an ATC, what held you back? And say you pass the training but don't make it through the check-out period, what happens?
