Ask post: Why does my baby hate me?
Have you tried any meditation? Just sitting, breathing, and trying to calm things? When you get pain like this, it causes stress, which in turn causes more.. it's a loop.
I had the same thing, the Braxton-Hicks, couldn't sleep, constantly being uncomfortable and achy.. and just had to relax in a recliner, breathe, rub the Buddha belly, and think of what "she" is going to be like.. I had to find an inner peace to make things quiet, even if it was for 30 minutes. Just so I... [more]

Ask post: Cult or Not?
I'm with deadmessenger. There's a commune (even a sign for it) off of Hwy 124 near I-20, called Promised Lands or something like that?
Also.. found a link for some communes, and there's plenty in Decatur

Ask post: Will having a baby physically change sex?
I had a vaginal delivery over 3 years ago, and after we got clearance from the doctor at the 6 week post-delivery appointment.. I was worried that I was "loose". My husband reassured me that I wasn't, and that it was just as pleasurable as before.
But we both noticed a few changes.
We couldn't have sex in the same positions. Suddenly, certain positions hurt me so much that I had pain shooting up my abdomen. I could actually feel like my uterus had tilted, but we... [more]

Ask post: Is tv really and truly bad for toddlers or am I believing the hype?
As the owner of a local mom's group.. I can tell you that it'll be much easier on you and the playgroup if you stick to the plan you mentioned. Don't bring it up unless someone asks... and even when they do, don't go into detail. Not letting your 2yr old know what a TV is until you're ready sounds pretty plausible to me. When you discuss reading something about how much damage it causes.. Mommies go on the defense because they feel like their parenting is being attacked. Even though you say it's... [more]

Ask post: What Else Is In The Teaches of Peaches?
There's some great suggestions in here. I thought I'd add this one in.. it's a gritty sound, but not very lyrical.

Ask post: How do I find text inside php?
I went so far as searching just for one word in that string of text using Grep, Commander, UltraEdit, BareGrep, InfoRapid, and it's not finding it. I wanted to make sure it wasn't just one program not being able to find it, so that's why I tried them all. (BareGrep was the nicest. I liked seeing the results as I type them in rather than a box showing progress)
I'm guessing this means it doesn't exist in the files I have. And I have already searched through the MySQL database... [more]

Ah. Your question fishfucker actually triggered an idea in my head while I was responding to you.
Google is not pulling the "description" from the website.. it's pulling from the DMOZ entry. I don't understand why it's doing that though. It's really screwing up the optimization of it. But the DMOZ entry is the exact string I've been searching for.

Ask post: When do a bunch of characters solve a problem in one long conversation?
Tape is one long conversation between 3 people in a single motel room.

Ask post: Can you name any non-violent movies for 2-3 year olds?
I have a 2yr old also.. and this is what she's allowed to watch:
Cinderella 2 - Not scary at all. It's very Disney Princessy-pretty. 3 cute stories, no villans. (Avoid Cinderella 3.. it has scary scenes in it)
Cinderella - Only one menacing scene with the step-mother and her glowing eyes.
The Many Adventures of Winnie-the-Pooh - fun loving full of stuffy cubby.. equally fun are the Tigger and Piglet movies (that someone already suggested)

When I was 3 I was addicted to Fred & Ginger movies--maybe the jokes went over my head, but I was fascinated by the beautiful sets, costumes, and musical numbers.

That's a pretty good suggestion. My Fair Lady is pretty fun to watch and so is Funny Face (with Audrey Hepburn). I think that depends on your daughter though. Mine is very girlie.. she enjoys dressing up, twirling around, wearing a tiara, and singing. So when she sees these types of productions, she's enthralled.

Ask post: pagans and witches and wicca, oh my!
First off let me say this, please.. please.. do NOT buy her any Silver Ravenwolf books. Most of her books are misinformed. That is a horrible resource to help your child enter Wicca.

With that being said.. ecauldron has a lot of articles written by members, as well as witchvox (a nice Witchcraft 101 Primer too). Books are very good. As a leaping off point.. I would show her Paganism before I show her Wicca. Wicca is a branch under the Paganism tree. I also have a link... [more]

Ask post: how do i overcome an addicting itch?
Are you taking any medications currently? Has anything in your diet changed?
I had the exact same thing and it was an allergic reaction to Tylenol and Advil combined.
The only thing that helped stopped the itching (very temporarily) was Caladryl. Good luck.

Ask post: My! What big eyes you have!
Thanks everyone for your suggestions. I am going to do an Elton John thing and buy a lot of different coloured glasses. They'll be easy to hide behind.
As for make-up I am going to try each and every tip and see where it leads me to. I'm also going to seek out a good hairdresser and get a professional cut that suits my face. I'm considering going to the cosmetology school also... maybe it would benefit students seeing me in case they ever come across someone like me.

My eyes do look a lot like hers, but you see less of my upper eyelids. I'll look into getting some fake stylish glasses.
I had an odd dream last night that a pair of thick brown-rimmed glasses looked good on me. Maybe I channeled a fashionista in my sleep and they gave me helpful tips.

Ask post: Looking for "barcades"
Dave and Busters has a very small amount of "classic arcade games". It's a nice place to go if you want to go with a group of friends, hang out, drink, and play a wide variety of games. However.. you'll be competing space with children. Primarily children and teenagers.

I do know that the Masons have their younger groups like Rainbow for Girls and DeMolay and you basically graduate to the Masons and Eastern Star, and that's what kept them going.

Ask post: Memorable spaces that tickle your fancy?
I love this view of my dining room, and I'm not sure why. The lighting is outdated, my dining room table is plain, and those flowers are fake. But every time I stand in the kitchen and look in that direction.. I get giddy.

My husband thinks the word "pumpkin" is amusing.

For me, he sounds hilarious when he says "penguin". I look forward to hockey season because I hear him say it the most then.

Ask post: please help my pregnant wife with her bronchitis
I wasn't able to take anything when I was pregnant either and I got sick twice. I drank a lot of juice with lemon because I heard (or read) lemon is a natural expectorant...honey is one as well. Drink lots of liquid and get a good humidifier.. or a shower as acoutu suggested.
I slept with a humidifier on, drank liquids, took my Flintstones, and drank a lot of orange juice (citric acid = expectorant as well) and within a week or so... I was better!

I hope she feels better soon.

Ask post: How do I find out about a murder?
I guess it wouldn't hurt to give more info, you know, just in case.

The year was actually 1948 or 1949 (I just got off the phone with my mom) and she's pretty sure it happened in the summer. In 1954 her and her family moved into an apartment complex in Lowell, MA in a French-Canadian neighbourhood. My grandmother told my mom to never tell anyone her maiden name. She said something nasty happened with one of her relatives in this particular building.

I suggest seeing if your local library will have free access to the Newspaper Archive (most likely). Otherwise a local university may provide access for a small fee.

I just checked with both sources.. no and no. Neither of them cover the Lowell Sun. That was a great avenue though. How do you access old police records? And prison records? Is that public information?
posted to Ask Metafilter by czechmate at 2:53 PM on June 27, 2007
Thank you so much jessamyn. I had no idea I could actually request those kinds of records.
The Massachusetts Archives was also a huge help. I can request prison records to find out if he ever went in (my mom believes he was) and if he ever made it out. No one in the family knows what happened to him after all of this, and no one spoke of him again, until the day my mom told me all of this.

Once I find the date it happened, I'll be sure to request the police... [more]

Arthur? No, that isn't him. However.. I'll ask my mom about that one. That particular spelling is quite rare.. sometimes it's missing an L or a T.

I thought about the genealogy side of it.. and I just might try that again. Although I have spoken to a few distant relatives about our side and Henry's father was the only brother they they had no information on. From what I heard, his father was a cruel and brutal man... and every one tried to forget he even existed.

I just got word back from the reporters and the librarians and both of them said there is no way they can help me and don't know of anyone who can. The librarian said if I knew the name of the victim, I could find her death certificate and pin point a death, but she knows of no one who would go through the archives to find this.

As for Arthur.. mom said she doesn't believe he is in relation to any of our immediate family.

I will definitely... [more]

That's him! That's where they lived! There's a picture of him? Can I see it? I'm just itching to know what he looks like!

I knew this would be time consuming and difficult so I don't harbour any ill feelings toward them, I do understand. Luckily I found a law student there that offered to do the research for me for a small fee.. I hope she can pull through for me and that I just didn't get scammed.

Thank you for that copy JJ86.. I'm sending it off to my mom to see if she recognizes him.

That's a possibility that they misspelled his last name and left off an L or a T, which maybe why I'm having a hard time finding him in places.
posted to Ask Metafilter by czechmate at 12:29 PM on June 29, 2007
Mom confirmed that the picture is definitely Henry.. she said she recognized him right away.
She also worries about me posting this here.. she's scared that our family is being judged. Now she regrets telling me. That won't stop my search though..

Ask post: Stop my 1-year-old from predawn rising?
What's her bedtime and what's her nap schedule like? Is she on a regular schedule with eating, napping, and bedtime? Or are certain days different than others?
Is she on breastmilk only or does she have a little cereal as well in the morning?

I think books can be useful, but sometimes I think they take away our ability to observe what's going on.

You know.. I may be way off base here, but have you had your thyroid checked lately? I had those same symptoms at one of my worst points with Graves disease.
If you have yourself checked by a psych, you could also try your family practitioner.. just to be on the safe side.

Ask post: How might we stop one of our cats from yanking out great clumps of her hair?
I would go with food allergy (as the others have said) because we've had a cat develop that at 11 years old, but I'll also say.. flea allergy. Our other male cat developed a horrible flea allergy when Frontline became immune to him.
Good luck

Ask post: Get Thee to a Doctor! (But Which?)
Once you get the name of a physician you're potentially looking at to visit, check out your state medical board records and they should tell you more about the physician's detailed record.
Also.. make sure the physician is board certified in the specialty.

You're best off with seeing a doctor in your own plan because when they make a referral to a specialist (if it goes that far) your plan will most likely cover everything. If you went to your dad's PCP and... [more]
