Ask post: Would it just be easier to tell my customers to buy a Mac?
scottreynen: I'll implement your first two suggestions. Can I ask though, in IE7 on your computer, does the right-hand margin of the main text area extend all the way to the edge of the brown box containing the phrase "A Defence You Can Afford"?

bcwinters: This may be the problem, but I use Dreamweaver and have let it handle most of the code. Bad idea it sems.

Ask post: Looking for cheap mac-compatible multifunction network duplex printer.
If I'm reading the question correctly, the OP is looking for a MULTIFUNCTION device. At a minimum that would include scanning/faxing functionality, which neither the HP LaserJet 4M or Brother HL-5250DN possess.

I'm looking for something similar and I've also found that everything that seems like it would fit the bill in terms of features seems to get poor reviews in one or more critical areas. For example, the Brother MFC series, particularly the MFC-8860DN ($449 on... [more]

Ask post: How does a gay man go about dating women?
Deathalicious: Thanks for the response. It definitely does not mean that I can't commit to that person. In fact, that's exactly what I'm looking for.

The World Famous: I can think of a number of situations in which it would come up. For example, if she asked about my past dating history. More importantly though, if the relationship was serious, I wouldn't want to keep such an important part of my past a secret from her.

Ask post: If I work out of my apartment, will I be my only client?
Great comments so far. The dedicated phone and mail is a smart suggestion. And I suppose its relatively easy nowadays to erect and maintain a professional facade through the use of technology. I remain a bit stumped with respect to meeting clients. Legal aid clients aren't necessarily sophisticated and likely don't have high expectations. Still, can I just meet them at a coffee shop? I suppose confidentiality would be a concern in a place like that. Still, I can't think of what the alternatives... [more]

Ask post: Bored? Help name my blog.
A short follow-up. I would like to avoid anything too esoteric and appeal to the broadest demographic possible.

Ha. Not that broad. By the way, I really like your suggestions, amtho.

Ah. I see now that my question does violate the guidelines. My apologies.

Ask post: Credit card number in Canada
Having lived in Canada my whole life, I don't believe your experience is common. I also agree with ssg, the receipts around ATM machines usually show bank card numbers, which is less of a privacy risk because a PIN is required.

Ask post: Cloud city! What is this weather phenomenon?
Thanks for your comments ssg. But this has never happened in Toronto before, at least to my recollection and that of my co-workers. Also, Southern Ontario is almost completely flat... no hills or valleys. Its actually gotten darker and thicker. The colour of moderately heavy rain clouds. I'm pretty sure they are cloud formations, but again, they are far lower than we have ever seen them before.

Ask post: plasma as secondary pc monitor
Shouldn't the OP be worried about burn-in?

Ask post: "I sent it!" "I never got it." Emailing assignments?
mendel: CutePDF Writer is a free, easy-to-install utility that allows you to print to PDF from any Windows application. I believe this is what shr1n1 was referring to.

Ask post: Law school?
Having just graduated from law school, I'm of the view that almost no one is passionate about the law upon entering law school. In fact, a more than significant number don't even want to be there. However, after three years, some gain a passion for the law. Most, however, don't. Law school is a sort of default career path for many people. Don't let that be you.

Ask post: Help me upgrade my MacBook HD!
The Macbook hard drive is designed to be replaced by the user, and its very easy to do so. Simply follow the instructions at iFixIt, as suggested above.

One caveat... not all 2.5" notebook hard drives have the same dimensions. Some are 9 mm tall and some are 12 mm tall. Only the 9 mm drives will fit in your Macbook

As for migrating your data to a new drive, buying an external enclosure is the way to go.

There is some confusion surrounding the warranty. It is unclear whether replacing the hard drive voids your warranty, however, the stronger position is that it does not.

First, Apple provides instructions [.pdf] for replacing the hard drive yourslf.

Second, the warranty has an exception clause that reads as follows:

"This warranty does not apply: (a) to damage caused by use with non-Apple products; (b) to damage... [more]

Ask post: Drafting a new roommate
Thanks for the responses so far. Follow-up to SassHat: Doesn't making them sign the sublease solve the problem of the transient roommate?

Interested in hearing from others.

Thanks for the response Dobbs. Where about is your place in Toronto? Where did you find it? I haven't seen anything like that in the areas I'm looking: Between Front and Dunas near the subway corridor and up around Yonge/Church and College/Maitland. Also, part of the reason I'm looking for a roommate is so I can afford the extra conveniences... washer/dryer and dishwasher. What's your place like?

Loiseau: I want to be as close to work as possible (York and Adelaide). I know most students wouldn't pay $600+, but I assumed there would be a bunch of grad students or young professionals that would be looking for something a bit more comfortable. Am I wrong?

Ask post: Who sponsors "The Factor"?
Thanks for the links. An ideal solution would be for me to be able to monitor the show myself. Is there any way I can stream the actual feed online?
posted to Ask Metafilter by pantheON at 10:48 AM on May 17, 2007
I can see the humour in your observation, terceiro. I don't get the show pumped into my living room, but I follow The Factor closely online and I'm familiar with both O'Reilly and his television and radio shows. Unfortunately, not having it as part of my cable line-up means I'm not familiar with the show's sponsors, hence my question.
