Human Factors Careers in Gaming
Some applications:
- Make games accessible to the handicapped.
- Study the ergonomic implications of extended play.
- Design comfortable controllers.
- Develop intuitive control schemes and key bindings.
- Research novel interfaces.
I am not sure what job title each falls under.

I mean that I'd like to handle an IOError according to its errno. Sometimes it's 2, other times 9, etc. I do not want to raise a custom defined exception.

Why are you American?
Ask a dead man. I am American because my grandfather, suffering persecution in his homeland, hopped on a ferry. Only he knows why I am American. I see no need to justify it, myself. I can only make the best of it.

What a neat project! I can participate, if you like.
I second what RichardP said. You want this to be as close to real as possible, since many bread crumbs will be left unintentionally. Students shouldn't be led astray.

Computer TA work ideas
The local high school hires students to format and upload content to its website. Before the town purchased a CMS, students would tutor teachers in web design. Very boring.
I have one recommendation-- lock everything down. Tight. You won't believe what they're capable of learning under pressure. If want help from them, well, the above posts sound good.

You may want to check out the Tango project. All Tango icons are free.
FamFamFam and KDE Look are other free resources you should explore.
Example icons:

I don't know of such an application. What I can tell you is that Pidgin, formerly GAIM, includes the optional "Contact Availability Prediction" plugin. It provides response likelihoods based on time of day, activity, etc. I'm not sure that it'll be developed any further as it was a Google Summer of Code project.

You can activate the plugin by checking off "Contact Availability Prediction" under Tools>Plugins (also accessible via ctrl-U). The plugin is fifth from the top when sorted in ascending alphabetical order.

Prevent PDFs from stealing Firefox navigation commands
I second ajr's suggestion of the Docufarm extension. Docufarm is an online utility that provides web-friendly access to antagonistic filetypes such as PDF, PS, and DOC. Docufarm can be accessed via the website search box linked above or through a browser extension. The extension permits you to upload an attachment to Docufarm with one click. If you'd prefer the document not be archived online, simply click "delete" before leaving the page. Using this utility overcomes the need for... [more]

@loiseau: it seems not. Here's an example everyone can try, regardless of their filetype handling. It's a full screen Flash animation. Just left-click on the banner once to guarantee focus and then try out all the key combinations you'd expect to work. The behavior of this page reflects how your browser handles embedded content, be it PDF, DOC, or SWF. Docufarm uses Javascript and so doesn't override your browser's shortcut management.... [more]

I'll Nth Super Paper Mario and Rayman: Raving Rabids. I own both games. Super Paper Mario is a long, thoroughly engrossing, RPG-like platformer with great replay value. Note that it is a single player game.
Rayman features a host of quirky little mini-games. Some weird shit, I tell you. Whacking rabbits with a shovel, picking worms from their teeth, launching bunnies off cliffs, you know the drill. Fun, but it may require a frank talk about drug culture.... [more]

Video game design for middle-schoolers?
If software design isn't your emphasis, try Scratch, from the MIT Media lab. The software permits visual programming, using function blocks not unlike Lego Mindstorms. That's no accident-- Mindstorms was derived from an MIT project. Scratch allows students to design simple interactive content, ranging from basic animation to more involved applications such as games. Here's an example game made with scratch: Assault.... [more]

I just want to add that even "simple" game design solutions such as Blitz3D require moderate programming knowledge. The time required to debug such proprietary crap is, well, less moderate.

I was in your shoes once. I sat on my hands for the better part of a year. Nobody knew. I thought the situation raw. Finally, on an impulse, but with great consternation, I confessed. This was over dinner in a public setting. Why? To leave her an escape route from the ensuing awkwardness.

Short story adaptation on a budget - and camera too?
Read. Then write your own.
My two favorite sci-fi short story sluggers are Stanislaw Lem and Phillip K. Dick. Excellent and intensely cerebral, their stories make great film fodder.

I'm sorry, you're right, I misspoke. A repair installation will not delete third party keys as I suggested. I've just encountered too many problematic in-place upgrades to take them seriously. We don't know that this is an issue with user data, though, so we're both being a bit hasty.
