Help me with clothes for my lifestyle--SAHM/Travel/exercise/errands/small town/comfort/classic
Cosign on lululemon. Their stuff is pricey but I got a simple black zip up jacket (heavy sweatshirt material) that looks extremely sharp, can wear with work trousers and to things like yoga class, were I so inclined, since it's workout gear after all. It's very well made.
Camper also makes some very cute shoes, comfortable, easy to walk in - not dress shoes but great for going around town. I think, if you like very classic, simple shoes that are well made and won't... [more]

Oh, and a French label, Agnes B. Very simple and classic basics that will last quite a long time and never go out of style. Unfortunately I think they don't make larger sizes if you might need that. But, I can say a t-shirt from there is a wonderful cotton fabric, beautiful slim fit, looks very neat and will not wear out. Same goes for their plain white button-down shirts. You could wear them for years and years. On the pricey side.
As a very good value, LL Bean... [more]

MCredibility of McCain's POW experience
From religion class when I was in grade school.. stories about drawing crosses and the fish symbol in the dirt, as a secret way of communicating that one was a Christian, are said to have dated back to its earliest years. I don't know if that is historical truth or just legend, but I think it's possible it's been passed on so long that it would be put into practice. Too tired right now to do much research on that I'm afraid. I don't think there's any way whatsoever to verify McCain's story.... [more]

What's a gifter to do with unwanted gifts?
This seems like it's about lashing out in anger, not only depression - it is so important that you acquiesce to the demand to not give her any gifts, that she can't even accept a personal item from your daughter? Honestly my take on your wife is that she is comfortable feeling terrible and wrong, and if you try to do anything to change that, she is afraid of it, and when people are afraid, some of them lash out and get mean, which includes refusing a gift from their own child.... You didn't do anything wrong or anything to be embarrassed about, at all.
I had no idea there was a difference between a go-go dancer and a "gentlemen's club" dancer, and if your boss doesn't frequent these clubs he probably has no idea either. So.. if you told him now that you were a dancer at a gentlemen's club, his reaction might be.. "huh? you already told me that." Personal finance and personal guilt
Salvia makes a great point. Wear whatever knock around clothes you want at home, but consider that your appearance in the workplace makes an impression on those around you, and investing in some good clothes is likely to be a financial advantage to you in the long run, because it is one more thing that will help you move up the ladder, thus, get more money. BTW, I don't know about a bunch of bloggers, but Suze Orman, as over-the-top as she can seem, says some pretty savvy things in her books about psychological attitudes toward money & definitely addresses issues like feeling guilty & not deserving to have any wealth. So, I recommend.

Unreasonable/crazy landlord question -- I accepted a job in a new city, and he's being VERY difficult.
So the landlord can't legally charge you for anything re: the parking space. You could tell him, if he has evidence of who *was* responsible for vandalism in the building parking lot, he should take that evidence to law enforcement.
It seems like whatever annoying stuff he is doing is completely irrelevant to the issue in question: how to get a new tenant accepted on the lease.

Also read DC tenant law re: breaking your lease, and read what your lease says about breaking your lease. Seriously, pay no attention to his mind games and "using stuff against you." The law does not care about that. But if he is trying to "build a case" to do something, please, know the law and know what your lease says, and document each thing he says to you - don't get emotionally upset about it, just document what he said and the date, and if there... Class consciousness
From a US perspective, attitude toward money.. I guess most everyone worries about money.. but talking a lot about those who have more money in kind of a resentful way, feels like a class identifier to me, as does something like going to a restaurant and remarking how much things cost on the menu and fretting out loud about getting a good value for your money there. Crystal City is booooooring.. ditto for Rosslyn.. I would advise against Georgetown.. it is cool for shopping but not really nightlife hotspots.. and very expensive.. and there is no metro.
The vicinity of U St/Cardozo metro station sounds like #1 ideal in my opinion. Bars, nightclubs, local music, plus the 9:30 club where a lot of really well known bands play, some good restaurants, young people, so much going on, and from that metro station it is a straight shot on the Yellow Line to Crystal City.... Mr Cringe-a-lot
What a great question! I have this trouble as well - can't bear to watch a lot of sitcoms or comedies for this reason. One of the worst for me is something that is trying to be philosophical and intense, and instead is IMHO simply awful, for example toward the end of the film I about wanted to reach through the screen and kill Bill myself just to get him to STFU. I'm finding the best way to get around this is to step back a bit and find something that's interesting about it, and focus on that,... [more]

Should I get a second job? Where?
No, not going to move. I like my full time job, but have only had this one for about two months, it's a progressive nonprofit so the pay is not high compared to other places, but that's the trade off. I think a part of this question is also trying to find a way to occupy some of my free time in a productive way, the possibilities are overwhelming and it's too easy to just go out and spend money in the evenings, honestly.

Also.. I could totally spend less. One of my plans for doing that was to occupy some of my time at a second job! That way I wouldn't spend it, er, spending money. I've done a bit of retail work before and though some of it sucked, sometimes it was fun, and interesting, and left me with quite a few entertaining stories to tell. I did check on taxes and fortunately or unfortunately, I have plenty of leeway for the next tax bracket, no worries on that one. :)
