Should I move out since there is no water?
Thank you everyone. I will be making some phone calls on Monday.
My landlord magically reappeared via email yesterday and basically said my bad, I didn't check my email all week......
!
And claimed he had no idea about the outstanding bill but that nothing could be done until Monday. I don't really want to move, but I'm going to see how this plays out over the next day or so and decide.
Again, thanks everyone.

Help me write a statement supporting my request for a pay rise
Since you're a journalist with little experience, I think you're in a much different position than people in other industries. Your boss is probably under pressure from his bosses to cut costs and by hiring you, he did. You do a whole lot of work, the work of multiple people, for the price of one.
It seems this is increasingly common in the industry and getting a raise isn't as simple, now, as explaining how much you bring to the paper.
It might be a good... [more]

Wrong religion?
OP here:
Thank you all so much for your responses so far. To respond to a few questions:
Generally: Why do I believe that there is only one right belief?
In the Apostolic doctrine, the teaching is that in order to be saved you have to be baptized in the name of Jesus (not in the name of the father, son and Holy Ghost) and you have to speak in tongues as a sign that you have the Holy Ghost. If you do not do either part, you are not... [more]

OP
Ghostinthemachine:Look at the answers you gave above. The questions were: "Why do [you] believe that...", "do you think...", and "why [X belief] makes more sense to you". Your answers began with "In the Apostolic doctrine...", "The teaching is that...", and "There is a scripture that says...". In other words, to questions about what you believe, you provided the answers of what others told you to... [more]

I just want to say thank you so much to every single person who took the time to post and a special thank you for such thoughtful and detailed advice. Thank you for challenging my assumptions and pointing me in the direction of many books and sites and just general trains of thought.
I truly appreciate it :)

Nattie: You interpreted my question the right way. I think the struggle here is that I feel somebody has to be wrong, with regard to religion, and I don't want it to be me. I'm figuring that since there is a right way, IMO, I should be able to figure it out somehow and I came here to see if anyone knew how.
What people seem to be saying, though, is that religion isn't so black or white and nobody is necessarily wrong. That's the concept I'm... [more]

The last month or so since I've seriously been questioning everything and the past week since I posted the question have been stressful, especially the past week. Respect my autonomy!
The problem is, these Christians believe that you will suffer eternally if you don't become a Christian, and experience eternal bliss if you do. Nothing you can do or say makes a significant difference in that equation -- what's a little annoyance now in comparison to that?
In my church, they emphasize "not giving up" on your loved ones when it comes to evangelizing. So like winston said, the evangelizing person thinks he/she is doing you a... [more]

Where can I find an internship?
Try calling the career services centers at some universities in the area (Berkeley, SF State, Sac State, etc.) and ask them. They should be able to help you and I'm sure they are used to dealing with people scrambling at the last minute for summer internships.

People who live under a rock
Part of it is cultural. Some knowledge is basic to certain cultures and classes, while it would never come up in the lives of someone from a different culture or class.
For example, a high school student whose parents are wealthy may know more about stocks, bonds, mutual funds, etc., horseback riding, sailboats, etc. while a child the same age of poor parents may have no clue about those things because it is not part of his/her world.

sixcolors That's interesting, PinkButterfly. I was going to add this in my OP, but didn't want to sound mean. I don't consider majority of my family as the most educated people. Most of my friends are educated, but I wouldn't consider most of them as "worldly".
So, does being educated have a lot to do with WHO you know?
Yes.
You learn things from the people who you interact with, especially... [more]

grumblebee School is the greatest common denominator of growing up. It's the one chance anyone gets to learn the same stuff as everyone else. So if it doesn't happen in school -- or if the school "learning" doesn't stick -- it will happen or not, based on random events that befall each person.
Very true. I tutored elementary through high school students from underprivileged schools when I was in college. The homework assignment for the 10th... [more]

"There is a feeling of immortality in youth..."
This talks about the poem The Negro Speaks of Rivers dealing with immortality.
"The rivers are part of God's body, and participate in his immortality. They are the earthly analogues of eternity: deep, continuous, mysterious. They are named in the order of their association with black history. The black man has drunk of their life-giving essences, and thereby borrowed their immortality. "
Hughes wrote this poem when... [more]

I'd just like to point out that Urban Dictionary has several definitions related to Heisman, though the context of the statement you're asking about is vastly different than how it is used in the song pumpkin11 pointed out. The song is Crank Dat [Superman].

thinking about it too much
It's understandable that you're resentful and sad.
I'm thinking, though, that since they've all graduated before they know how boring graduations are. On top of that, some of them have little children who are hard to keep entertained, still and quiet as it is under normal circumstances so at a large graduation you can imagine how hard it would be.
I would think they are not sitting at home trying to make you feel bad, but instead kind of weighed... [more]

Finding a sharp, reliable student worker
Your ad is important in determining what kind of applicants you'll get. I'm a recent grad and, when looking for freelancing work, I would evaluate the ads for spelling errors, etc. and the overall tone. If your ad shows your professionalism and is thorough, I would think you'd attract better applicants.

Sample Essays (not for sale)
You might want to talk to an English major friend you have. I was an English major and loved writing essays. My friends in other majors would help me with assignments related to what they studied (poli. sci, bio, etc.) and I would gladly help them with essays, even letting them read some of mine. This would be free, minus the cost of helping a friend with skills you already have.

new york state untaxed online purchases?!?
"California and New York taxpayers are supposed to pay sales tax on out-of-state Internet purchases, but the burden is on the taxpayer, not the online merchant. In both states, when you fill out your state return, you're asked to report and pay tax on out-of-state purchases, but tax authorities have no effective way to determine how much individuals really paid to out-of-state merchants. Under current law, it's a tax that's almost impossible to collect."... [more]

How to get over a nasty breakup
It hurts for a while. Not forcing yourself to get over it, or act like you're over it, will be the most beneficial in the long run because undoubtedly your true feelings will resurface time and time again until you acknowledge, Yes i'm hurt and let that process instead of putting on a happy face and suppressing the feelings.

I would just say to take care of your children right now.
I can't comment on how to deal with a broken marriage (no experience whatsoever) but I do know firsthand that unhappy parents can have a very negative impact on the children. Since you love spending time with your sons so much this will be mutually beneficial for you all.

How can I make it up to my pal?
I found out my best friend had been lying to me for years about not having a relationship with one of my exes. I was hurt and angry because, as many have said here, it calls into question our entire friendship. The transgression in the original poster's case is just the lie.
That's just it, though. The problem is that he lied, not necessarily what he lied about. Same for me; I wasn't upset with my friend because she was dating my ex when I wanted him too. I was upset because she lied to me, purposely. She wasn't presenting herself honestly to me. That's not insignificant.

To answer your question:
If you had an unattractive friend, and you found out after several years that she'd been lying about her sexual experience because she was ashamed and wanted to fit in, how would you react to her?
My reaction would have two parts:
-Dealing with the fact that I had been lied to
-Trying to understand my friend's motivation and dealing with that
I'd be... [more]

I'm saving for moving out, having an emergency fund, just generally trying to be financially responsible.

Financial-aid-filter: Is saving money for suckers?
It depends what a "sucker" is to you.
If a sucker is someone who has the ability to pay for things themselves; doesn't have to rely on other people/assistance, then yes.
It may not seem fair that people who spend their money unwisely are those who get benefits and assistance, but unfortunately that's how it works a lot of the time in many different realms.
What were you saving the money for? Wasn't it for a situation like this....?
