MeFi post: Beyond Rape: A survivor's journey
It's a nasty accusation, one that does carry cultural overtones, but one that seems nonetheless to be true.

I don't think that data proves black men commit more rapes, just that the ones committed by black men are reported more. Then you have to consider why that might be:

-Knowing the stereotypes about black men, a victim might think they are more likely to be believed so they report when they are raped by black men. From... [more]

valkyryn, I just wanted to offer up a possible reason why the stats for black men were so high. I'm not sure how much higher/lower the numbers for black men would be if all rapes were reported, but there seems to be at least one more reason (stereotypes about black men) to report rape by a black man than by other men.

rtha:Well, I think I've been "handling my business properly," and I don't feel slapped in the face. Although, as data points, I'm female, and a person of color, and a lesbian. So maybe I've been anti-racism/sexism/homophobia just out of self-interest, and because that may not be a pure enough reason to fight for change, or to declare myself anti-those things I mentioned above, I should stop fighting for change.

I'm not saying that... [more]

MeFi post: Unexploded Rocket-Propelled Grenade Impales Army Private in Afghanistan
This may be silly, but this scenario was on Grey's Anatomy when someone had an explosive of some sort in his/her abdomen and Meredith was standing in the operating room holding it so that it wouldn't explode...

The bomb disposal guy in Afghanistan had actually been watching that episode recently, the ABC story says.

That's what happens when you only read 2 of the 3 links. Sorry.
