Ask post: For whom does the caged clam sing?
Yup, wrong note. The tuba player in my quintet wants a shirt with the name "Clambo" embroidered on it. I've referred to a [badly] rehearsed piece as "chowder".

Ask post: There is a mouse living in my stove. He was not invited.
It's not trapped. Mice can squeeze through a hole the size of a dime. Set traps. If you use spring traps outside the oven, put them on a sheet of newspaper, that way you can crumple up the whole deal and toss it.

Ask post: This time, I want to move WITHOUT trauma...
OK - I don't know what your current place looks like, but it sounds like you should start by de-crapifying. This is to allow you the room to pre-pack.

Get trash bags and start stuffing them with crap. Ask yourself the question repeatedly, "do I really need this?" If the answer if no, throw it away. It's freeing. If you don't find your bolts, buy replacements.

Three weeks before your move, collect (or buy - some moving/packing... [more]

Ask post: Opening a Guesthouse in Cambodia = Newhart + The Beach?
Instead of running a hostel, wherein you'd be perpetuating a service economy and not really contributing to the local population in any significant way, consider getting involved with the Rural Schools Project, which would give you the same flavor of living in Cambodia, but by helping educate you are making a far more lasting contribution to the people who will be there after you are gone.

Ask post: How did having a baby change your life?
I'm the dad of a 5-year old with special needs and a 16 month old. I feel like I'm always struggling to keep up in some way or another, but holy cow am I really enjoying just playing again - sometimes with toys, sometimes without, making up the "rules" as we go. It has also made me startlingly more aware of my emotions and how they affect those around me.

My son at 13 months (and older daughter) really liked the Mystic Seaport Aquarium, so that sets the Boston Aquarium up as a target. The Franklin Park Zoo is also pretty nice. Plenty of room to run around and lots to see.

Ask post: Lookin' for the national beer o' Texas
According to wikipedia, Pabst is the owning label at this time.
I went to the Lone Star site and after much unnecessary pain, there was a clickable map to list distributors. I saw no distributors in Washington, Oregon, or Idaho. This doesn't mean you're SOL. Probably the best way to find out how to get a hold of it is to call the brewery directly and find out who the distributors are and from the distributors find out who the retailers are. The other way is to methodically call... [more]

Ask post: How can I overcome my sexual shyness?
In theory, this is the easiest bf you've had for this because he wants to please you. You can overcome your fear of rejection by writing out questios for him or requests and then ask yourself how a reasonable person would respond and how you are afraid they would respond. Acknowledge your fear, but that doesn't mean you need to give in. You will probably find a huge gap in your fears and in what a reasonable person would do. Then you can remind yourself that not only is he reasonable, he... [more]

Ask post: Can I transplant a 10-foot-tall eucalyptus?
As many people on the west coast of the US can tell you, eucalyptus is invasive and fast growing. You might try moving it, but wouldn't lose a lot of sleep if it didn't make it. You can replace it readily and swiftly.

We have a Graco City Lite, which apparently isn't made anymore. The current equivalent appears to be the Graco Metro Lite.

We've used the City Lite for more than 5 years and it still works for pretty well.

We selected it on weight and maneuverability. The storage underneath is pretty good, but ejects its contents upon folding. The handle height is moderately adjustable, which is great for differing heights in caretakers. It's pretty narrow... [more]

Ask post: First-timer going to Burning Man needs advice
If you're comfortable camping in "unusual" conditions (I did wilderness survival in the Boy Scouts) and you're with people of a similar bent, then camping at Burning Man is easy peasy. If you're not comfortable then you're increasing the chances that you'll be a liability to others. If others in your group are not, then there's a greater chance that you'll be taking care of them and compensating for their ignorance.

I went twice (96 and 97, IIRC) and had a... [more]

FYI - a good player will not look to see if the ball fell. S/he will look to the third base coach who will be watching and will signal what the runner should do. This way, the runner can advance or retreat with maximum speed and/or safety.

Ask post: Games Programming vs Software Engineering
I went to a school that allowed you to create your own major if you wanted to. You might consider that.

Personally, I hit my CS major hard (it was love) and then took full advantage of the liberal arts that were all around me and took anthropology, religion, ethnomusicology, and physics classes just to name a few. I chose not to double major or even to get a minor, but rather to have a smattering of that which interested me.

Ask post: ARM programming, where do I start?
My understanding is that more recent devices running PalmOS (ie, Handspring Visor) are ARM-based. I've have written code targeted for them (albeit in C) and the gcc/eclipse rig was pretty much a free download. That's a pretty low cost to start hacking with a fairly well-defined platform.

Ask post: Computer class activities?
One thing I've done with kids around 9th grade is to teach them how to count in binary on their fingers. Yes, it gets giggly sticky when you reach four, but you'll get at least 1 kid who internalizes the whole process and stops counting in base 1[sic].

One way to work on this is to only show one hand - you can count to 31 (25 - 1). Then see if you can get them to figure out how high they can count on all fingers without actually having to count that high. This is a... [more]

Ask post: Help me avoid a babysitting blunder
Find the sense of humor and milk it. With my boy (16 months), it's tickling, being swung by the arms, and yelling for the joy of it. Make sure you know what the child's favorite toy it - that will make life a lot easier, especially if you know ahead of time and show a deep interest in it too.

Ask what a tantrum looks like so you can separate it out from something serious.

Your parents aren't ready for you to be grown up. That's their problem, but it's also their house.

You crave the intimacy of your girlfriend. Trust me, I've been there. If it's summer where you are, take a lot of long walks in secluded places and enjoy the intimacy of being together alone. A little time apart won't kill you and it will make the time you have together more intense and enjoyable.

Ask post: Arts and Crafts with a Science Twist?
If you have a budget, you can get a pack of blueprint paper and some ammonia and do cyanotypes.

I've done this with 9th grade students where after a lecture/discussion about light and chemistry they cut out interesting shapes from normal paper and set them on a sheet of blueprint paper then went to lunch and I left the lights on. After lunch, they "developed" their pictures with ammonia vapor (basically, a little ammonia in a heavy jelly jar), and you move the... [more]

Carpet is usually priced per square yard. You've got roughly 28 square yards to fill. You can get cheap, cheap institutional quality carpet for like $3-5 per square yard. Easy.

FYI on the foam mats - we got some from my sister-in-law when she discovered deep teeth marks in them from her son. She was worried that he would bite off a chunk and aspirate it. My in-laws tend to be far more asphyxiation-phobic than my family, but even that gave me pause.

You don't get to pick your child any more than they get to pick you as a parent.

I wanted girls - I grew up in a Y chromosome heavy family and wanted the experience of more X. I got that with my first. My second I got a boy. I was disappointed and I didn't fall in love with him immediately as I did with my daughter, but I did. You will too. Accept her for what she is, not for what she isn't.

Deep Fried Oreos

Whenever I get out the fryer, I make some of these artery cloggers. Basically, you need a doctored pancake batter: add a handful of sugar and a teaspoon vanilla to a typical batch of pancake batter, cutting the water down a little bit to give you a thick batter.

Dunk, fry until GBD. Drain on a rack and dust with powdered sugar.

I'll pass on my experience. For more than 20 years, I've been trying to acquire a taste for coffee - some times more actively than others. In my case, it was mostly for social reasons than anything else, as most of my family and extended family are heavy coffee drinkers.

Get an instructor. Ignore what you see here and internet video etc. Get someone who will look at what you can and can't do and adjust so you can get to a "can do" place. Ask post: Help with Clay Topsoil
Tillers will aerate, but only to like 6 inches of depth. Double digging is back-breaking, but works extremely well. When I lived in Silicon Valley, I rented a house with a backyard with great light, but the soil was like adobe clay. We ran a sprinkler for a few hours at night for a few days, keeping the area covered with black plastic during the day to take out the weeds/grass. Then we double dug. The resulting garden was spectacular. Totally worth the work.... [more]

You'd worry more because it's the last time you're going to flip all your bits until you're 64, and that's probably the last time you'll flip your bits ever.
