In the US there are three major forms of manual communication
ASL (American Sign Language,
PSE (Pidgin Signed English or Contact), and
SEE (Signing Exact English). Translating from English to any one of these is hard enough. That's not stopping
this team from trying taking on the added challenge of a machine translation. I can't imagine them doing half as well as
this man's efforts at live translating rap, switching between all three variants (video, with voice over).

October is Down Syndrome Awareness Month
- at a time when
eugenics was socially sanctioned,
John Langdon Down pioneered many of the techniques that are considered best practice today for encouraging the development of children with Down syndrome. Not long ago, standard practice in the United States was institutionlization from birth, which led to short, unhappy lives. Only in the past generation, have we rediscovered that with care and medical treatment, people with Trisomy 21
can and do
flourish.
Find a
local Buddy Walk near you and get educated.

Years ago, Jane and Michael Stern authored
Amazing America, a fabulous book about roadside America, which was one of my favorite references for something novel to see while traveling in the US. The New Jersey section is far too brief. Thank you
Weird NJ for filling in the gap.

The Atari 2600 redux
This time
Jakks TV Games has put 10 old Atari games into the old Atari joystick form factor fo $20US. That's $2 a game. Sure, they're not all
terrific games, but hey it's easier than trying to
do this yourself.
Don't like the 2600? It's OK,
they also make Activision and Namco versions.

The Wishing Fish Clock
a wonderful piece of functional art in the Regent Arcade in Cheltenham. I've always love
Kit Williams' work and this is a perfect reason why. He consistently captures wonder.

Gourmet Magazine
had a pretty interesting article (wish it was up on line) about farm-raised salmon v. wild salmon. Farm-raised salmon is scary, especially with regards to
disease,
waste handling, food (feather meal, blood meal, bone meal and other things that wild salmon do not eat) and an industry which is controlled by a very small number of multinational companies.

Why yes, I could use a
distraction. Simple, yet oddly effective. Distraction.com is a distraction and nothing more.

Heroes by James
- James doesn't like the some of the action fugres he buys, so he modifies them to get what he wants. Check out the Hulk and Iron Man figures. Pretty nice.

Left-handed smoke shifter
and other objects to send a novice out to find. Notably missing is the spaghetti straightener. My grandfather told a story when he worked in the label printing division of the Continental Can Company. He sent a guy to the stock room for a bucket of halftone dots. The sucker^H^H^H^H^H^Hemployee got bounced from department to department trying to find who got the last bucket...

You know it's true/I'm happy to be stuck with you
- high school students vie for a $2500 scholarship by attending their proms dressed in outfits made from duct tape. Interesting idea, although I question the
No purchase Necessary clause in the rules, and I'm pretty sure that they made more that $2500 from all the Duck brand duct tape sold to make the outfits.

The Chicken Dance
inspires lunacy like no other piece of music. I found myself in a giggling fit over the silliness of the pictures on this page. Beware-it has the obligatory embedded MIDI file.

Censoring Cartoons
and in effect, censoring my childhood. Without a doubt, some of these cartoons are racist, but I'd prefer that they not be shown rather than cut up. Other cuts just don't make sense to me.

E-Bow
A nifty electric guitar effect that replaces the pick. Ignore the visuals. Instead, give it a
listen.
