Measuring influence: how do political lobbyists or similar groups measure their success?
Not really precisely in your topic range, but policy researchers trying to measure their success in the development sector often use the International Development Research Centre's "outcome mapping" tool. Check out the website too. These guys look at measuring the impact of agricultural research and have done work to investigate how to quantify success. Academics use bibliometric measurements (citations and publications), but it doesn't sound like that's your ticket. Policy research,... [more]

Belgian Beer Road Trip
The sixth trappist beer, Westvleteren, can only be bought at the abbey. I've been meaning to get hold of some for years, but they make it hard... You need to phone in advance to book some. Well worth the effort, though, by all accounts.

Netherlands Travel
Belgium: highly recommend Ghent, if your kids like wandering about a very old city with some great architecture: lovely cathedral/churches, behijnhof(s), turn of the century socialist buildings, castle, cloth hall, and amazing pubs (not, perhaps, for the kids). I rate it more than Brugge/Bruge because it's less touristy, although Brugge's lovely too. Like all of Belgium, it's easy to get to from anywhere else in Belgium.

Sri Lankan Airlines
I flew there from Dubai on Sri Lankan a couple of years back, and the flight was pleasant enough and they seemed relatively reliable. I know a number of people, mostly aid workers, who fly in and out fairly regularly, without undue stress. There was an attack in March 2007 but since then, as far as I know, it has been undisrupted. There is a fullscale war going on in the North, however, although it seems relatively contained. The war is unlikely to get any worse, since it's pretty full-on at... [more]

Help me feel I made the right decision in moving to NYC.
Yup, I got the just-arrived blues/panic worse than I've ever had before or since on my first day or two in NY. Lasted all of about two days, and after that I found it an amazing place - albeit that I found I had to escape once every six weeks/two months. What hippugeek said: kick back, find some local venues you like (bars, shops etc.) and then go out exploring.

Snark vs. Wit
I think you can have a witty piece of snark - wit is a characteristic of a person, specifically, that he or she is clever and amusing in speech/writing; snark's defined by what its trying to do, i.e. undermine someone or something down, generally needlessly or with undertones of malice.

Basic textbook for understanding GMO?
Useful, thanks. Is there one book/source that you would pluck from the many as a from-the-beginning overview?

Zennie, thanks for the tips - in answer to your question I'm starting from a position of complete ignorance, knowing neither about cellular biology nor plant reproduction.
