Where to go?
I visited some years ago, flew into Glascow and rented a car and drove north. There are great little towns all the way up the loch before you hit Inverness that should suit your needs and wants. About halfway up (this was a long time ago, my details are sketchy, sorry) was a rocking little town called Fort William. Further east in the Grampians there was a wee town called...Pitlochry, I think, that had a great pub and a great little distillery, the smallest I think, where they make the Edradour.... [more]

Charlton Heston dead at 84
Which is awesome, because it shifts the standard of being a better person from what you do and believe to your adherence to a set of social conventions; it becomes more important to give the appearance of decency than to be decent.
Controling one's impulse to speak ill of the dead, tamping down that impulse to unleash one's hate, is probably decent practice.
We can't blame Heston for the bad gun laws and gun... [more]

As to the "get off my lawn" jokes and such, they are to a substaintial degree metafilter's lawn.
Now, maybe we do not all need to get off it, but maybe we should not all stand on it at the same time?

It's about a systemic mis-valuation of a whole litany of securities and financial instruments that consequently can't be hedged nor their risk evaluated in any meaningful way, and the likelihood of a credit/liquidity crunch as a result.

TOKYO (Reuters) - Oil jumped to a record above $111 a barrel on Monday, as a surprise weekend cut in the Federal Reserve discount rate and the fire sale of stricken U.S. investment bank Bear Stearns sent the dollar to all-time lows.
THIS IS GOING TO BE FRACKING AWESOME.

Okay, correct me if I am wrong, but the Bear Sterns thing is a de facto bank failure, right?

The company said it will now start winding up and sell its remaining assets under Guernsey law.

Keep my happy hour from becoming sad.
Depending on the size of the bar and the time of day/night you want to do this, you may want to pop in there and work something out before hand. But then again, it does not sound like you want to pay for all the drinks. Are you most concerned with space for everyone, or cost?

In that case, I'd choose a bar with ample seating space and just get there early to grab at least one large-ish table. And try to choose a bar that does not get slammed at the time you'll be there. What day of the week? That could be the key. If you're planing this for a friday at say, 8 pm, best to go in a few days beforehand and talk with someone. But if it is a monday or tuesday at 5:30 or so, the plan as it is in your head should work just fine.

Separate checks, please
nthing the complexity/time consumption. Even with the POS systems that make it easy to split a check, or use multiple credit cards, it takes you off the floor and away from your tables for longer than you want to be. At 9:30 on a busy night, you want to print, drop, settle, and close your checks as quickly as possible and turn those tables. Losing a few seconds can start a chain reaction; next thing you know you've been triple sat, you've got wine to open on another table, an order to take on... [more]

Heh. Going to a table in even a one star straunt here in the city and asking about method of payment at the beginning of service could be grounds for termination. And even when you order by seat, which you most often do so the runners or another server can serve without "auctioning off" food, even with the best, most state-of-the-art POS systems, it still takes a server longer to process those checks. Someone above mentioned timing and flow, and the seperate check thing is easily in... [more]
