Where to go?
I visited some years ago, flew into Glascow and rented a car and drove north. There are great little towns all the way up the loch before you hit Inverness that should suit your needs and wants. About halfway up (this was a long time ago, my details are sketchy, sorry) was a rocking little town called Fort William. Further east in the Grampians there was a wee town called...Pitlochry, I think, that had a great pub and a great little distillery, the smallest I think, where they make the Edradour.... [more]

Keep my happy hour from becoming sad.
Depending on the size of the bar and the time of day/night you want to do this, you may want to pop in there and work something out before hand. But then again, it does not sound like you want to pay for all the drinks. Are you most concerned with space for everyone, or cost?

In that case, I'd choose a bar with ample seating space and just get there early to grab at least one large-ish table. And try to choose a bar that does not get slammed at the time you'll be there. What day of the week? That could be the key. If you're planing this for a friday at say, 8 pm, best to go in a few days beforehand and talk with someone. But if it is a monday or tuesday at 5:30 or so, the plan as it is in your head should work just fine.

Separate checks, please
nthing the complexity/time consumption. Even with the POS systems that make it easy to split a check, or use multiple credit cards, it takes you off the floor and away from your tables for longer than you want to be. At 9:30 on a busy night, you want to print, drop, settle, and close your checks as quickly as possible and turn those tables. Losing a few seconds can start a chain reaction; next thing you know you've been triple sat, you've got wine to open on another table, an order to take on... [more]

Heh. Going to a table in even a one star straunt here in the city and asking about method of payment at the beginning of service could be grounds for termination. And even when you order by seat, which you most often do so the runners or another server can serve without "auctioning off" food, even with the best, most state-of-the-art POS systems, it still takes a server longer to process those checks. Someone above mentioned timing and flow, and the seperate check thing is easily in... [more]

Coolest places in New York to visit at night?
agh! The Patriot is nasty! There is another nasty bar/club, Lit, on 2nd ave. that is worth a look.
I'd advise asking again about a week before you arrive. At that time, mefites who live here in nyc will have a better sense of what might be going on. If there is a rubulad or motherfucker party, for example- both are sure to blow yer mind. Then grab the Voice, the L, and the Onion when you get here and see what is happening with the musics, films, art etc. This is the... [more]

Grilled recipes wanted for volunteer meals
If you've been eating burgers n' brats (hope the brats begged for mercy) you gots to get some seafood on that grill. I seem to recall sam's club, etc. selling a grillable bag of frozen shrimp, shark or skate might be available if you are on either coast (foil method for the skate, i think) but striper or tuna is sublime. Sirlion tips and vegetables marinated and skewered at least gets some veg in there, and that can be done with pork, lamb, chicken breast...anything cubeable. And an old... [more]

Yeah, rereading the question, I reckon saltwater seafood is right out. But prowl the local seafood market if there is one. Trout, crawfish, perch...freshwater fish are grillable, i am led to belive. I like to course out the meal then throw a few random beer marinated lamb chops on the fire, and let people share. Side dish- have you tried chili warmed over the grill in a cast iron pot? It takes a while but it is sure to please.

Sick in a foreign country
He needs to get home and have surgery on his artery promptly. This happened to my dad some years back while viiting me in nyc. The doc wanted to operte right away, but he delayed the operation in order to get home and consult his personal doc. In the meantime, he had another tia and needed the surgery anyway. The operation is fairly simple and if he is healthy otherwise he ought be up and about in no time- my dad left the hospital the next day. If the french docs are reluctant to release him,... [more]

that was helpful, ikkyu2. please try to remember this is askmefi, not slam the layperson. that being said....
"The underlying cause of a TIA often is a buildup of cholesterol-containing fatty deposits called plaques (atherosclerosis) in an artery or one of its branches that supply oxygen and nutrients to your brain. Plaques can decrease the blood flow through an artery or lead to the development of a clot. Other causes include a blood clot moving to your brain from... [more]

What to say to an institutionalized friend?
Try to let him know you are thinking of and pulling for him. Encourage him to work with his docs to get better. As you write, imagine he was in a car crash or came down with a serious but cureable disease. Try to normalize it for him, removing the "crazy" stigma.
As far as visiting him, try to get a feel from his folks if that would be a good idea. Maybe he can get email in the hospital? Depending on how his treatment is going visiting him could be great, or... [more]
