Ask post: Where can I buy reasonably cheap, reliable air filters for my 1997 Saturn SL2?
Thank you both. For the record, it's been over 10k miles since my last professional oil change, but that's longer than I mean to usually go. It was rather an accident, as I forgot how far away Cedar Point was :)

Ask post: What's wrong with my eyeballs.
Could you perhaps have mild amblyopia? I had it and as a child when I was drowsy and not concentrating one of my eyes would "wander out" slightly, but it wouldn't really be noticeable except to a medical professional or my parents, trained for what to look for. I sometimes experienced double vision as that happened.

If this is what your doctor saw, it would have nothing to do with the broken nose, from my understanding. It might just be that he never had a... [more]

Ask post: Who wrote this song?
I can sing parts of these lyrics to the tune I know, but I'm not sure it's right, yet. I'd have to hear the tune before I know for sure, but I don't want to pay for a ringtone. Hmm. Will report back if I can find it at the library or something.

Also, the Amazon link shows that particular DVD came out very recently. This was something like 20 years ago. Obviously this song could have been in the Sesame Street repertoire for a long time, and done again, but I can't seem to find evidence of it on any other recordings, yet.

I think Jay Reimenschneider has been reading too much Doris Lessing.

I have had "clitoral" orgasms after only having vaginal stimulation, and vice versa. But mostly, when it's done right, I can't even tell too much about my orgasm's placement so to speak. The feeling is bigger than that.

So, I haven't been in MeFi long, but basically what I can see from here is that we're whining over wfrgms turning MeFi into Fark by having a Fark-like MeTa thread.

Anonymous, why are you afraid to have other people care about you? You're here and anonymous and having people you don't even know look after you.

As good a thing as MeFi is, as a person with an addiction you need to connect with people and stop hiding. Go to meeting. Find your sponsor. Quit juggling girls you don't care about, that you aren't really connected to, that you are using as a substitute for your addiction.

Ask post: A very sad conversation.
The listening part is definitely the most important part, but I have a practical suggestion as well.

Hospital clothes suck. You're baring your ass half the time; it gets drafty. I don't know if he's still in the hospital or not, but hopefully they will let him wear as close to street clothes as he can. My mother, for whom I am a part-time caregiver, has ascites too. It has complicated the clothes she feels comfortable in. If your friend is going to continue to have a... [more]

I should add two things:

If your friend is losing weight, it's probably not in his tummy unless the draining helped him, and his arms and legs may be skinny compared to his middle, in which case watch out for shoulders and sleeves being too big.

And of course the other biggie is I'm sorry. Obviously the cancer is happeing to him and not you, but of course you're going to have a lot of feelings about this. notthatgirl's advice is good advice in that arena.

Ask post: Yet Another Empty Box for Christmas
Regarding the chargeback suggestion:

I used to work for a credit card company. I was not in the chargeback division but had to know something about it. Our company said you had to start the chargeback process within two billing periods and would not start it until you'd actually gotten one official bill about it. (People would call upon seeing things in their online banking, and we told them the issue might resolve itself before we even billed them.) I don't know if this... [more]

Ask post: Food and Film
Last Holiday, which, by the way, was much better than its preview and marketing. Queen Latifah is an amateur chef. The main theme of the movie is her vacation in the face of terminal illness, but an important part of her vacation is eating well and meeting with a chef. The Food Network did a special about the food photography (food cinematography, actually, I guess?).

Ask post: How to Help a Sick Friend Feel Less Alone With Her Pain
I was in this position once. I am also in a caretaker position with my mom now. One thing I can say is that if this had to happen to her, it's good that it's happening now instead of later in life, in a way, especially if her condition turns out to be one that cannot be completely ameliorated. This time in one's life is a better time to reconsider one's expectations, when one has much more time to make the most of those revised expectations.

If I were in your position, I'd be rereading my copy of Codependent No More before making my decision.

It's too hard to suss out everyone's motives and needs in this forum. I think, as long as you can be honest with yourself about any part you may have in this, that that book will give you the tools to do it. Also, it'll give you some hints as to what kind of feelings you'll go through afterwards if you do go through with the divorce.

Ask post: What is bigger than alot or a shitload?
micayetoca's answer made me think of this:

"Seventy times seven" is the amount of times Jesus said to forgive someone in the Bible. My childhood religion class taught me that in that time, they wouldn't multiply it out and would just take that to mean "as many times as you're asked." That result is still a finite number, though, just unnamed.

I think a similar concept in modern American English, at least for young people, is... [more]

As someone who worked in credit cards, I'd advise you not to count on those tax returns, nor that those APRs will stay the same. Neither can be counted on, though of course your behavior will make certain outcomes much, much more likely.

I'm not trying to dash your hopes. All I'm saying is think of the plan you outlined as a best-case scenario, and plan for the worst instead, just in case.

I had a bunch of ideas, so my comment is more like a novel. Sorry. :)

I like doing simple nigiri sushi (the kind where you just make a little finger of sushi rice and lay something tasty on top). My favorite is thinly-sliced avocado. Also you could make a sushi salad (sushi rice with ingredients arranged on top) in a little bento or pseudo-bento.

I also like boiling some pasta and putting just a wee bit of butter in, and a little dried basil (or... [more]

I should've added that you can make a tasty fattoush or tabbouleh in five ingredients or less, even if the traditional recipes call for 6 or 8 ingredients if you're counting the spices. That was what I was driving at but never actually said. :)

Also, I just realized your question never mentioned anything about lunch but I assumed these were lunches we were suggesting to you. But yeah, LIS, most of these make excellent dinners.

Ask post: How can I get my adult dog to poop where I want, when I want?
Do you know anything about the dog's medical history?

My dog had a huge cyst on her butt that eventually got infected and had to come off. When the vets sewed her up, they didn't have a lot of skin to work with, and so ended up giving her a "butt lift" by way of the tension of the scar. So now she has a really hard time pinching off, and takes a lot longer. She sniffs around more, too, and I think in her case it's the dog equivalent of reading on the toilet.... [more]

The part you never mentioned is how you came to be past due by two payments. Did your check get lost in the mail? Did your electronic automatic draft not kick in? These are things that are not your fault, and would give you more leverage, both in terms of disputing and in possibly getting some economic relief from Capital One (maybe if you press for a manager).

Based on my experience with my border mix, there are a couple of things you might want to rule out before starting your dog on permanent medication:

b) Has your dog been more exposed to stress than usual, or are the seizures usually precluded by things your dog doesn't like? My dog has... [more]

She uses the Freestyle line of products. She mostly likes them, but she's not technologically savvy and so never uses the function to save results in the machine. So that function may not be worth paying for either. YMMV.... [more]
