Ask post: Does such a song even exisit?
Gosh, I think that maybe it is the Joel tune! That's the song I was trying to recall. I'll check with dad this evening. That Bee Gees song is an awesome one I'd forgotten. I''ll remind him of that one as well, as it could be what he's looking for.

Ask post: How best to confront a friend about inappropriate drunken/buzzed behavior when they don't have many other friends?
I'm not 'taking her side', her behavior is obviously not cool, but how are you certain she's not the one telling the truth re the hook-up? You know both people, but I do wonder why he gets a 100% credibility pass.

MeTa post: AskMe orthography
I think this is 'the internet from the 80's' type humor. One can find it in abundance on, say, the fark tube. Some people still find Bob Hope hilarious and jam to Jim Nabours.

Ask post: Japan autumn colours in early November?
Tohoku, Kanto, and Nikko should be, probably, showing autumn foliage. Kyoto is a favorite, but you will perhaps be 2-3 weeks early. Yakushima is more or less subtropical, but the cedar forests are very worth a visit if you can swing it.

MeTa post: Search and Destroy
I wish for this as well SV. I'd like to ask an anon question or two and be able to 'interact' with the repliers w/o mailing the mods or setting up a blind email addy. Also, I sometimes (often) would reply to a question if i could do so anonymously*. I suppose this is the price I pay for transparency what with using my real info and all?

MeTa post: Trisomy 21, General Information
Very excellent post. I uppose this is as good a place as I'll find here to post this (I elected to not post it in 'that' thread, pearls before swine and all that). A NYT piece by Harriet McBryde Johnson, who died earlier this year. It's a few years old, but it almost haunts me.
"At this stage of my life, he says, I am a person. However, as an infant, I wasn't. I, like all humans, was born without self-awareness. And eventually, assuming my brain finally gets so fried... [more]

It seems I'm not 'hip to the convention' as per usual, if this doesn't belong in MeTa, where does it belong? We can now post directly to the sidebar? You want it buried in the original post where we would never see it? Seems that Jess had no problem with this post, so why all the condescending sneers? Is this your website? You made these rules? I didn't really know there were rules so much in MeTa. I can't help but think that some have been...well, flummoxed, and want to censor what they can't... [more]

two thoughts:
Our late, apparently universally liked, DFW was 'flawed', as am I. Not physically, but emotionally/mentally/spiritually whatever. Many artists are, as are many auto mechanics and roofers. People who don't think that sucking another breath is really worth it. People who are no 'whole'. I gather than quite a few here (by their own admissions, I'm not making guesses or cracking wise) have serious depression along with other DSM-IV brain chemical glitches. This is the... [more]

Ask post: Go away, nightmares!
Not much here, but diet, esp eating just before sleeping, and drugs, prescription ones in particular, often cause what might be more accurately termed night terrors. The good news is that it's treatable.

Ask post: Should vegetarians eat marine creatures?
I personally find Michael Pollen more rational and consistent than Singer, who seems to me a very polarizing activist. However, as noted above, this is a very personal decision. One of my best freinds forever, and also one of my sisters-in-law are vegetarian who eat seafood. The friend, perhaps once a week, the sister-in-law, daily. If one is vegetarian for moral reasons, I find eating seafood an inconsistency. I don't however, argue the point, as I myself am perhaps inconsistent in some areas.... [more]

Ask post: Super fiber bean? 32g per cup?
how does a smaller bean have more skin? I realize a larger bean has more meat, but is not the skin that covers that meat equal, in ratio, to that on the smaller bean? In a 1/2 cup of beans would not the amount of skin be more or less the same?

mhuckaba , I also have no idea and didn't mean to throw yr question off track. That just kinda flummoxed me. And I thought there were at least two good answers above, but perhaps I misunderstand the question.
Thanks pompomtom, I accept your reply, but am no closer to understanding why it is so. Anyway, this is muhuckaba's baby.

'I am a liberal, but I'm blown away by Sarah Palin'

My liberal friends were outraged when rumours about Barack Obama attending a Madrassa or being a Muslim surfaced on the internet, but all week they have been gleefully trading emails of Sarah Palin distortions.

There was the doctored picture of her carrying a rifle, wearing a stars-and-stripes bikini while a man in the background drank Schlitz beer. Or dopey quotes about God, creationism and... [more]
