Canadian Brass
I saw them live when I was probably in sixth or seventh grade and still bothered to practice playing trumpet. It was around Christmas and they had the whole concert hall - several thousand people - sing Silent Night along with their performance. It was fantastic.

The Ol' Dirty Bastard is described as "Profoundly Deranged Rapper, Wu-Tang Clan"
Actually, a lot of summaries for rappers are pretty great. Snoop's is "Sippin' on gin, juice" Dr. Dre is "Nothin' but a 'G' Thing," Sir Mix-A-Lot is "Seriously, he likes big butts"...huh.

Elementary School Slavery Play
jesus christ people it's a play written by 5th graders. i am sorry that it is not shakespeare, but between being prepped for NCLB assessments and actually taking the damn assessments, i'm just glad that these kids had the time to write it at all

Bye Bye Blackboard
The professors at my school (which is to say, the Math Department) demanded blackboards when our math/science building was refurbished over the course of the past couple years. I approved. Coming to college was the first time I'd had a class with an honest to god blackboard since probably seventh grade.
I hate writing on them, though.

Impeach Dubya.
I love Kucinich simply for having the cajones to simply get up and speak for what, four hours at this point? five? about how badly the Bush administration has fucked up everything. It's great to watch, even if I think he's reaching in some of these articles.
He's into hour five, I think, and his voice still sounds pretty good.

My advice to the graduates: Plastics.
We got Judith Butler. And a cat wandered onstage during the ceremony, and that was awesome.

Also, as long as we're adding favorites, I quite liked Jon Stewart's at William and Mary, which was discussed previously.

Courage to Refuse
I think we should study people who volunteer for studies. There's something wrong with those people
At least at my institution, those people are responding to incentives. Either they're paid for their time (doesn't have to be very much) or they have to do it for a grade (intro psych students here are required to take part in other peoples' studies, I think).
I stay away from the psych department. Those people are nuts.

I really like My Medicine. This may be because I really love Snoop to no end, but the song is catchy, damnit!

Zombie Strippers really allowed my family to have that all-important discussion about our values (specifically related to racism and exotic dancing) as well as science (viruses, zombies). These topics can be awkward to bring up out of the blue, but are important to discuss. Thanks, Sony Pictures!

A Mathematician's Lament
I get into discussions with my girlfriend (and many of my friends in the humanities) about this all the time. Although I'm in Econ, and not math, I'm much math-ier than most of my friends.
I've always been pretty good at math, particularly when I could understand its application. I never wanted to be a mathematician, but I got to college and was told "if you want to go anywhere in Economics, you need math," so I enrolled in Calculus and realized "holy... [more]

Helen Keller and Anne Sullivan talking
This is as good a place for a weird, embarrassing confession as any:
My mental image of Helen Keller is that she's black. I have no idea how I got this idea in my head, but at some point in my childhood I acquired this piece of misinformation, and no amount of reality or screenings of The Miracle Worker seems to be able to fix it. I have to remind myself every time.

Our own Tibet

Going out on a limb here, but I'm guessing...money?
Or fear of having another Waco on our hands?

blue beetle: oh, at my catholic elementary school/junior high (which I've only been out of...six years? seven? good lord), kids would get drunk at school (not all of the school was air conditioned, so we were allowed to bring water bottles...you see where this is going).
At least, I seem to remember that happening a few times. I wasn't really in on the loop. Too dorky.

Frightening new military technology
...will reducing the human cost of war by removing soldiers from the battlefield make it "cheaper" to get public approval for war in the future?
"When US leaders imagine a bodyless war or a soldier-free war they are referring, of course, only to the bodies of US soldiers. Enemy bodies are certainly meant to die (and increasingly enemy casualties, civilian and military, are not reported or even calculated). This asymmetry makes the... [more]

Armenia declares state of emergency
The girl who lives across the hall from me is Armenian (born there, immigrated as a child, still speaks Armenian at home). She's been freaking out about this all afternoon. One of her favorite topics has always been "man, home is massively corrupt and fucked up," and I guess it never really hit me until now. It's pretty damn scary for her.
Thanks for this post. Now I at least feel a little more informed about this than I did.

The shot not heard around the world.
Winter 2066: As a sign of increasing tension between the two countries, Canada proves reluctant to allow American troops on Canadian soil or allow American planes to fly over Canadian airspace. The United States and Canadian tensions rise, but Canada eventually backs down, and US troops pass through Canada. This sets the stage for the Canadian annexation in 2076.
