talking with an ex?
I can't speak to the specifics of her situation but I have had a slide into depression happen alongside and/or contribute to a breakup. I was fortunate enough to stay in touch with my ex and at a later time, once I'd recovered, I did discuss my depression with him. My impulse to do so was partially as an apology - I felt some guilt over being depressed and thus not the best partner I could have been. I wanted the ex to know that there was other stuff going on in my head aside from him. I wanted... [more]

How do I not sweat the small stuff...literally?
I adore certain-dri. My armpits are occasionally itchy since it's pretty harsh on skin, but if you go easy it'll really clear up the moisture.
A friend of mine also had botox injections and said it worked like a charm. I'd try certain-dri to see if it works and if not, check with a doc and see if you can get diagnosed and prescribed the botox injections. Good luck!

A Zolofteron pill would be nice
Sorry I'm late to the game, but Zoloft caused fairly significant weight gain for me after about 1 or 1 1/2 years on it. 5'10" female, and I gained probably 30ish pounds (I don't generally use the scale) which looks in photos from that time to have been bloaty water weight. Docs I've talked to about this say that some people have immediate weight gain from Zoloft, and others have this delayed response a year or more into being on it. For me, it was an indication to switch meds.... [more]

What are your favorite songs featuring piano?
Seconding Rachael Yamagata, and adding Charlotte Martin. Of Charlotte's two cds, On Your Shore has more simple, piano-based songs. Stromata is more highly produced, though also fantastic.

Help me find a bridesmaid dress that doesn't suck!
I am in the exact same situation, except the bride in my case chose harvest gold. I went to a bridal store in NYC (where I live) and tried on everything in a 12, 14, and 16. (yes, it made for a depressing afternoon....) I'm currently 14 in everything else I've bought, but I ended up ordering an 18 to fit over my boobs. I ordered style 6544 because the neckline was very flattering and the faux-wrap gauzy skirt hid a multitude of midsection-related sins. Hope you can find a store nearby to try... [more]

Portland OR Filter: Suggest a local events magazine for a Portland newbie!
@everyone: Fantastic! WWeek and The Merc look like great free versions of what I'm looking for, and I'll definitely recommend that she pick them up when she's out and about. Thanks for the pointer to urbanhonking's calendar, too. Great site. Portland Monthly and PDX look like New York Magazine - trying to have interesting news articles as well as event listings and reviews of stores/restaurants/areas. I think I'll get her a sub to one of them anyway. If nothing else, it'll give her something... [more]

COBRA vs. out-of-pocket group insurance?
Thanks everyone! I will call the COBRA person to confirm tomorrow, but it looks like I was confusing being eligible to elect coverage under another plan with actually being covered under that other plan. Which makes perfect sense, as the insurance companies wouldn't want to get double-billed by me. :) Thanks!

Looking for a simple art-hanging solution
@100watts: These are what you need for making a floating collage of thin, small items like photos or postcards. I've linked to the MOMAStore here because it was easy to find, but they're available elsewhere if you google. Enjoy!

Did the toothpaste make my teeth hurt?
FWIW, about 10 years ago I was at some middle school summer science camp thingy and they had us do an experiment where we chewed wax for a minute and then ran some chemical test on the saliva that got embedded in the wax. This test was supposed to show how susceptible we were to cavities. People who were very susceptible would get them even if they did all the brushing and flossing; people who were on the other end of the spectrum could let their dental hygeine slide a bit and still be cavity... Desperatly wanting to pay down my sleep debt
I have to add another plug for melatonin. It used to take me an hour to fall asleep unless I was severely exhausted. But I recently started taking 1-3mg of melatonin as I get into bed each night and I find that it helps me go from feeling a little wired and mind-wandering quickly into the "oooh I'm falling asleep". It effectively swats down any second-wind I've gotten from watching tv or playing on the internet. YMMV, but I usually get that rush of sleepiness 15-20 minutes after I take... [more]

New paralegal job = a million papercuts! How do I prevent them and/or heal more quickly?
You guys rock. Thank you!
@pollomacho, tastybrains, & wild_eep: I am a bit skeeved out by the finger condoms and rubber fingers - partially because the only time I've seen them used was by this older, creepy guy I used to work with, and thus he's forever associated with them in my head. But if the moisturizing doesn't work, maybe I'll give the archivists gloves or finger condoms a try.
Looks like I'm going to put a few of the suggested... [more]

Why does the bus make me sick at night?
I can't answer why nighttime riding gets you worse than daytime, but I can strongly, strongly second meerkatty's recommendation of seabands. They're a miracle for motion sickness. Buy a pair and put them on as soon as you get on the bus, or even a few minutes before, and it should help prevent the nausea from hitting you so hard - or at all. Good luck!

What to do in NYC from Sunday to Tuesday?
FYI, if you want to hit up the Chinatown and Little Italy area, the Feast of San Gennaro is happening right now. If you're opposed to big crowds, avoid it. But if you want to hit up street vendors for gelato and great pastries, check it out.

How do I get off the pedestal?
I second cior's comments about making sure to do the small gestures as well as your "big extravagant gestures". Bouquets of flowers and intricately-planned nights on the town are great, but it sounds like you're paying more attention to how good you are at playing the game than ensuring that you're actually enjoying being with *her*.
It also sounds like you expect her to be a tease, or play hard to get, or challenge you with put-downs to ramp up the excitement... [more]

How can I stop being jumpy?
Anon - I do the same thing. When I hear a plate clank loudly in a restaurant, I flinch/jump. When I'm blithely listening to music and have my back to the kitchen door and my bf happens to walk up behind me quietly, I scream bloody murder and my heart rate goes through the roof.
It's been indicated to me that it's a matter of an out-of-whack nervous system. If memory serves, there are the sympathetic and a parasympathetic sides to your nervous system, each of whom work in... [more]

Books for a boy
Where the Wild Things Are.
I second Goodnight Moon, Harold and the Purple Crayon, and Alexander and the Terrible Horrible No Good Very Bad Day. Those are all fabulous choices.
I also loved the Ruby & Max books by Rosemary Wells when I was 4-5. I still love them now...

Toking up the dope on Topamax
I was on Topamax for about three months and, besides the weight loss (~15 or 20 pounds) it was nothing but bad side effects. There was no noticeable effect on my migraines or tension headaches. Plus, I had severe nausea for the first 45 days, then once the nausea died down I had zero appetite - nothing tasted good and I could barely get myself to eat 500 calories a day. I also developed ITP -- ideopathic thrombocytopenia -- my blood platelet levels dropped to a dangerously low level (i.e., I... [more]
