I feel like I should mention that I spent a good hour or so cracking up at these. I would gladly pay US dollars for a stylishly understated Taylorham-Chickasaw Pants West Public Library t-shirt in order to support this endeavor.

The Impossible Cool
Man, if there's one thing I've learned growing up, it's that cigarettes do make you look cool, no matter what they tried to tell me in school.

Derailing for Dummies
If there is one thing that has never failed to make me unsympathetic towards anti-racism activists (they themselves, not necessarily their goals), it's anti-racism activists.

See, I see something like this and now I don't know if you're purposely trying to parrot one of the derailments in the article or you sincerely feel that way.
I sincerely feel that way. Like, that's just me honestly reporting my reaction pretty much every time I've been confronted with the rhetorical brilliance of the anti-racist movement. It's almost as if putting people instantly on the defensive is likely to make them annoyed and unwilling to engage in a... [more]

The abandonment of reasoned discourse in favor of accusatory snark and the whole "you're either with us or oppressing us and if you're white you're oppressing us even if you're with us" are two of the things that have annoyed me in the past about the anti-racist movement (at least as it has made itself known to me; there may be less annoying elements out there). Also someone once said to me that "Jews are a kind of white people".

Cards against Humanity
My god, but Apples to Apples is a terrible "game". But I should print this out on the off-chance that any "friends" of mine wish to "play" Apples to Apples with me. Then I can break this one out and make them suffer with me.
Maybe I am in the target audience.

Mayor Curley, your daughter is like the cute baby equivalent of that Che Guevara icon, looking off into the distance, boldly determined to bring about a proletarian revolution in the daycare.

The German-style game
People actually enjoy Apples to Apples? I guess it's better than Bunco.
The most exciting thing that ever happened during a game of Apples to Apples that I played was my friend's unstable ex-boyfriend cutting a card in half with a knife.

The worst colleges in America?
I'm not sure what it says about Hampshire or Metafilter that there are so many Hampshire students, ex-students, and alums on Metafilter.
I'm leaving in a week to start my second year at Hampshire, and the thing about the place is that, even though there are burnouts, slackers, and potheads running all over the place, it's not a big deal. There's no culture of competition at Hampshire; I never feel the need to compare myself to anybody. The people who suck don't usually... [more]

Jon Scieszka and Lane Smith are perhaps the unsung geniuses of kid lit. The Time Warp Trio, Math Curse, and The Stinky Cheese Man were all big, weird favorites of mine in my younger days. Good to know they are still working together and still keeping it weird.

...I DRINK IT UP!!
I loved the ending. I laughed out loud at it, but I think that may have been the intended reaction.
When describing the effect of this film to my friends, I've called it a cross between Citizen Kane and Lawrence of Arabia, except then you personify that movie, get him really drunk, put him in the desert, and have him write a screenplay. If you produce that screenplay, you get There Will Be Blood. Definitely an amazing movie.
