MeFi post: The worst colleges in America?
I'm not sure what it says about Hampshire or Metafilter that there are so many Hampshire students, ex-students, and alums on Metafilter.

I'm leaving in a week to start my second year at Hampshire, and the thing about the place is that, even though there are burnouts, slackers, and potheads running all over the place, it's not a big deal. There's no culture of competition at Hampshire; I never feel the need to compare myself to anybody. The people who suck don't usually... [more]

MeFi post: 2008 Weird-Ass Picture Book Awards
Jon Scieszka and Lane Smith are perhaps the unsung geniuses of kid lit. The Time Warp Trio, Math Curse, and The Stinky Cheese Man were all big, weird favorites of mine in my younger days. Good to know they are still working together and still keeping it weird.

MeFi post: Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark
When I read these books as a kid, they ended up freaking me out so much that I had my mom put them away so they couldn't tempt me again. They might not scare me any more, but I'm not sure I want to risk it...

MeFi post: Everybody loves a choo-choo
I wish everyone really did love trains this much. Maybe if gas prices hit $6 a gallon and airlines start charging you fees for your pocket contents we'll get some movement on high-speed rail networks in this country.

Exemplifies the principle that if you are going to make a single-link YouTube post, you make it good. Thanks for the Mega Man meta-laughs.

MeFi post: ...I DRINK IT UP!!
I loved the ending. I laughed out loud at it, but I think that may have been the intended reaction.

When describing the effect of this film to my friends, I've called it a cross between Citizen Kane and Lawrence of Arabia, except then you personify that movie, get him really drunk, put him in the desert, and have him write a screenplay. If you produce that screenplay, you get There Will Be Blood. Definitely an amazing movie.

MeFi post: Hi, I'm Muzzy. Big Muzzy.
I watched Muzzy in Spanish, and, like suedehead, my favorite part was "¡Llevenseló! ¡Llevenseló!" Oh, the memories.

MeFi post: Bored? Try watching some slideshows.
I have no idea how people derive any information from clicking through slides people post on the internet. In my experience, reading through someone's slideshow is just an exercise in frustration, making you wish that you were there watching the speaker instead of trying to glean information from bullet points. Why not watch the inimitable Merlin Mann give his Google talk? Web video is here, guys, let's stop putting slides on the internet. PowerPoint sucks. And don't think Keynote is better.... [more]

@spaceman_spiff: The pdf version of the DC Metro Map should be able to print up big...at least, I can zoom way in on it w/o loss of detail. Bring it to Kinko's and see if they can print it at 200%.

MeFi post: The revolution will be hard-bound and highlighted
I'm starting college in the fall, and I'm screwed, because I find the idea of buying a used textbook extremely distressing. I couldn't handle using a book someone else had used. But I'm glad to know textbook revolution has relaunched; there's good stuff there.

MeFi post: The New Physics - An Exam
Yeah, the actual point is in the click-through. And I feel sorry for UK physics students. Say what you will about the impact of AP on high school education, the curricula the program requires are all legit (in my experience). Who's in charge of the GCSE, bureaucrats or educators?

@interrobang: I love your point. People expect to "get" art in a way they don't expect to "get" physics. Understanding something isn't a right, it's often something that must be worked for. "The reason contemporary art seems opaque to you is because you are ignorant" should be no more offensive than "The reason quantum mechanics seems opaque to you is because you are ignorant." The truth is, it doesn't take all that much work to... [more]
