Berlin: mich, dich, Sie, euch, und uns. Was denken wir?
I can usually be persuaded to drink a beer on the week-ends, at least if it's in Kreuzberg or Neukölln. Also a Mefite has a bar here.

You know, when springtime comes to Berlin there's nothing better than grilling in Görlitzer Park. Of course we might have hailstorms in June for all I can tell. The weather here tends to fuck with you, much like From Bklyn's vast hordes of children.

Have you ever been in Kaisers waiting for the butcher when one of the Turkish women requests a lamb? And they hand this lamb over the counter and she puts it in her suitcase and walks away? And presumably the man of the house or the oldest brother jabs a spit through the animal, and lights up a big pile of coals on the ground in the middle of the park, and the family drags a tent and a samovar and a whole dinette set out there and sets up camp, and they sit there slowly spinning this lamb all... We have some cool people at MeFi
I dig the question but I didn't think the results were that diverse. Basically scienists, doctors, editors, writers and ad execs. I was hoping to see answers from an astronaut, a garbage-man, a leg-breaker for the mob, etc.

"I'm a nun, so reading the Bible is my 'going to the gym'."
"I'm a hired thug, so going to the gym is my 'going to the gym'."
"I'm an 19th century phrenologist, so palpating grapefruit is my 'going to the gym'."
That'd be diversity.

February Berlin meetup?
Let's make it happen!
But yeah, as far as I'm concerned, we don't have to meet on Potsdamer Platz.
We could just meet in kolophon's bar again, as far as I'm concerned. Rumor has it that Kreuzkölln's blowing up.
(Grudgingly I could also make it out to Potsdamer Platz, if that's what everyone else thinks.)

There was arguably trolling in the Swiss meet-up thread just before us. It was deleted but you can see the traces of it still.
Yeah, I was thinking...in terms of centrality, I could imagine that there might be some bars around Kochstrasse, but otherwise Kotti is the most central thing I know. If you look at a map, it is literally the exact center of Berlin. I like Möbel Olfe, but it's crowded and noisy. Never been to Trinkteufel or Franken... can you sit down there and... [more]

From Bklyn, the only thing you did is that you said "You are not from Boston!" and then you said "Where do you park your car?" Tediously belabored inquiry is fine with me, risque songs would be nice, tangos and lampshades are certainly acceptable, tangoing with a lampshade while firing questions at everyone in verse form would make this meetup a night for the ages. But I heard that in Charlottenburg they bring the Ordnungsamt when people start to, uh, express themselves in... [more]

Yeah, are you serious? I've never heard of anything like that. I've seen twenty cops trying to argue a bum into not smoking in the subway station. Outside of confrontations with political demonstrators I've never seen German cops get aggro.

Wednesday and Sunday are possible for me. The sixth is today. We're celebrating the Chinese New Year over here. If any of you want to come by for a drink and an egg roll, feel free. Dresdner Str. 23, "Arrieta". We'll be burning money to celebrate because...because none of this was my idea, I just live here.

Allright. For cotterpin and any possible lurkers: me and my girlfriend together look like two large land mammals in blond and red. I'm not sure if she's coming, though, and by myself I look indistinguishable from about 99 percent of this country.

This is the weirdest part of that post:
I've had dark moments since then. Days when I've been afraid to speak, days when I've been afraid to write the truth and instead just talk about something less pressing. And each one of those days is a failure, I think. It's not easy. It's hard. I could lose my job, I could lose my friends. I could even end up beaten. I could be in jail or worse, so it's not easy by any stretch of the imagination, and some days - most... [more]

Maybe this call-out's unnecessary, and the world has bigger problems, but the reason people are irritated is that the commenter and his favoriters mistake self-congratulatory groupthink for heroic individualism. And it's exactly that sort of lack of discernment and susceptibility to the most transparent rhetoric that put Bush in office in the first place. That's what made koeselitz so angry in that thread. And besides, the discussion afterwards makes it clear that BrianBoyko was talking about... [more]

Are Questions Okay When They're Based Around Finction Worlds
"If a deterministic universe is in a totally symmetric state (around some axis or something), will it remain symmetric forever?"
Yes, this is a much better version of the question. The twins are only there to add a human element, but if you posit an entirely deterministic universe, then the human element wouldn't be able to throw a monkeywrench in the symmetry any more than anything else would.

Grumblebee, the problem with this question is that while the question is, technically, answerable, the answer doesn't really make anyone one bit more knowledgeable about anything.
The question contains two premises.
Premise 1: an absolutely symmetrical, non-random universe.
Premise 2: whatever happens in this universe, happens symmetrically and non-randomly.
Question: could this universe ever... [more]

Berlin meetup, 27 October
I walked by Kolophon's bar and it looked nice. Also he already offered anyone who says "metafilter" a free shot.

Well, I might not have responded to "creasy boy" anyway, it's not the name I usually go by. Although I guess I would've been wondering who was making such a strange noise.
And shame on you for patronizing that place!

I was on my way to Ä. I would've stopped at your bar for a drink but in a moment of weakness I didn't feel like explaining to the people I was with what Metafilter is. A lot of my German friends here can barely google.

Kolophon's bar is close to Hermannplatz on the U7. Würgeengel or Gorgonzola Club in the Dresdner Str. are more Mitte-y, around Kottbusser Tor/Moritzplatz, but I don't know if that would be a better connection for you. What's your subway stop?

Yeah, there are lots of lakes all around Berlin and lots of green spaces. I really like the juxtaposition of its trashy low-income glare with all the trees and water. I've taken what I like to think of as good photos here.
Also I hardly ever talk to any Berliners here, and whenever I do I'm immediately bored and turned off. I think the key to this city is talking to all the other foreigners. But, honestly, I hardly ever leave the house anymore, so all I really care... [more]

Yeah I friend of mine moved to Munich, and there don't seem to be neighborhoods there. He has to travel with the subway to get to anyone he knows. Whereas everyone I know in Berlin is within a kilometer of my apartment. Munich has some nice-looking buildings and stuff, and it's clean, but that doesn't help you much if you have to live there.
But Munich might be the best city in Germany after Berlin. Although they say Hamburg is nice, and I haven't been there yet.

Berlin Meetup
You're talking about Berlin, Germany and not Berlin, New Hampshire?
I don't know if I've earned the name Mefite since I've only been here a month. But a meetup in Berlin sounds OK to me. I live in Kreuzberg, which is home to the best bars in the civilized world. Like Würgeengel, Intertank, Bellman Bar, Kinskis, Möbel Olfe, Misliwska, Bateau Ivre, Cake...

That's embarassing. Fortunately my ego isn't hitched to my technical skills. There are all kinds of members near me. Möbel Olfe is packed on a Thursday and probably also Friday and Saturday. Bellman Bar (Gloguaer/Reichenberger) and Cafe Kreuzberg (Ohlauer near the Maybach Ufer) are quiet, the latter a little small. We could also meet up in the Markthalle of Herr Lehmann fame and eat Wienerschnitzel.

Bellman's my favorite bar. Until a few months ago I used to live right on that corner, Reichenberger/Glogauer. Nice ambiance, they generally play good music, and the bartenders all wear ties. Relatively quiet but not at all spiessig.
