MeFi post: Dare frame thy fearful symmetry?
I think the field "mathematical physics" is often considered more a branch of math than of physics, anyway; John Baez belongs to the math department at his university.

MeFi post: The Dude Abides
It's mediated, neutered wisdom. Maybe studying true Zen Buddhism is too hard for the dipshits and douchebags who quote movies like this one.

And are the traditional koans included in almost every post, being presented by a teacher with full transmission in the Soto lineage, also mediated and neutered?

Where can true Zen Buddhism be found? Say it quickly!

You might think it was "in my pants", but I'm just pleased to see you.

Nope, still 'mediated and neutered'...

(in response to mullingitover) I think that is a common Western misunderstanding. There is a big difference between the koans and sheer random statements. The koans point at specific, although nonconceptual, truths. When a teacher engages in koan study with a student, he is expecting the student to demonstrate a particular understanding when the koan is penetrated. However, that can't simply be a certain conceptual analysis repeated by rote; it needs to be clear that the understanding comes... [more]

MeFi post: It's always right - two times a day.
I wonder if this is partly the reason that the Buddhist monk's vow not to eat after noon developed. Probably makes it a lot easier to get up at 4 am.

Actually I think you want to do the fast _before_ the first time you try to get up at the desired time.

Reading it again, maybe that's what you said. The way you referenced doing things "before" the current time made it confusing.

In any case, yeah, you're eventually going to have to be awake at the time you want to be awake--how would you possibly avoid that?

MeFi post: :'-(
Thing is, the game itself sends you those presents that say "Love, Mom". It's just a little random thing that's thrown in there. If you just leave the game sitting for months you'll wind up with a bunch of those presents--I don't think it had anything to do with the real-life Mom.

Not to ruin the touching moment or anything... (and maybe I should be embarrassed that I know this).

MeFi post: Geeks rejoice: a new Joss Whedon television series!
"Are bicycle frames sexy?"

And somehow everything comes full circle...

It's almost like people can't stand that others could love something that they really don't. Why is that such a problem?

It's a form of adolescent posturing--by dissing something that's popular, you try to demonstrate that you're above it and thus part of a more select group.

One would hope most people would outgrow that kind of thing by adulthood, but that's not always the case.

MeFi post: Keanu? Where are you?
This article is the ultimate fluff piece, there's almost no content whatsoever.

Umm, what exactly do you expect from a popular article in a newspaper? Here is the original paper.
