Music post: The Rescue at Arisaig
Karlos, I'm not getting distortion when I listen to it (and I'm on a different computer than the one I posted it from), so I'm wondering if the problem is at your end?

Here are the words:

Come all ye jolly sailor lads and listen to my song,
A tale of a shipwreck to relate, I won't detain you long,
All on a father and his son, bright fortune it did smile,
When on one day they were cast away, coming from Prince... [more]

Jessamyn, that's hilarious. I know him, and I sang that song at his wedding. It's me he's referring to, singing it. :)

snsranch: I've been thinking about that too - the harp would be nice, but there's not many harpers around here. A guitarist might be easier to convince.

TwoWordReview, thanks for the confirmation! I'm always terrified of mangling another language, especially if fluent/native speakers are around to hear it. I'm glad you enjoyed it!

Is it very wrong of me to think of the Popcorn Song when I hear that bass line?

I went to a well-respected studio here in town that specializes in recording Celtic musics, plunked down my money on the barrel head and sang my guts out for an hour and a half to make a demo CD. Just me and the mike, and the sound guy twiddling knobs and clicking his mouse in the room adjacent. It was dollars well spent, and compared to other studios in the area, the price was reasonable, too!

Music post: Rideau Ramble
For those of you who are interested, Frank has a kickass CD about the life and times of Thomas D'arcy McGee, highlighting the various traditional musical influences that can be found in the Ottawa Valley. The tune for this song comes from that album. Read more about it here.

Holy Cripes, I re-read my post a couple of minutes after posting, only to realize what an incredibly egocentric idiot I sound like. Many apologies!

Thanks for the advice. Can you recommend someone that could help? (I'm kinda new here).

What's making the long electronic-sounding sustained notes at the beginning of the track, nicolin? It sounds like deger pipes (even though I know it's not)!

Thanks, flapjax and Alvy! This is just my own way of chronicling the stories of my family. There is more where this came from, I assure you! :)

The stories are mostly oral, passed down to me through my folks. This is then bolstered with background research; for example, I managed to get the service records of both my uncles, which helped flesh out their stories. For songs where the protagonist is still alive, I just go straight to the source, and ask for as many details as I can.

Picking people's brains is something I'm trained to do from my Uni days; it comes naturally. The beauty is, the more you ask, and... [more]

The tune is an old song: "Rounding the Horn". I think it might be English, originally. You can hear it here.

And for those who were interested, the tune to the Turret Gunner's Farewell is "When a Man's in Love He Feels No Cold", originally collected from the singing of Paddy Tunney. Hear it here.... [more]
