Slim Whitman, RIP
I grew up watching commercials of Slim and being not quite sure what exactly to make of him , even though I liked the sounds of his records. At any rate, he's part of the cultural landscape and he'll be missed.

Talking Famous Female Suicide: The Right, Wrong, and Vice Way
I kind of find the praise for VICE from some odd. At best they are occasionally amusing, and I'm usually a fan of un-PC stuff.

They're going to go "white middle class feminists are stupid, let's go to Hooters and have a good time!"
No. Nobody goes to Hooters for a good time, unless they're idiots. The wings suck and there's no actual nudity, so it's a ripoff.

The chickenhawk phenomenon explained
My dad was drafted in 1965, before the lottery and sent to Vietnam. He was stationed in a combat zone, but thankfully never got his CIB. His politics have always been middel-of-the-road going slightly to the left or right with the times. FWIW.

His final words were "Set me free."
The term "mixed feelings," is probably the ultimate cliche, but it describes what I'm having here. Like most people, I sympathize much more with Van Poyck's victim than I do with him, but I can't deny that 25 years in solitary sounds excessive.

Armed With Antique Clothes and a Bike
For some reason, the older I get, the more I aspire to glamour.
Really? The older I get, the less I care what people think about how I look and the less effort i want to expend on it.

I didn't say I care about what other people think. It's for my pleasure.
I can dig that. It's more the amount of effort that fucks with my head. As a t-shirt I once saw said "I'm awake and dressed, what more do you want?"

They think he's a righteous dude.
Like most of John Hughes' movies (except Dutch), It hasnt aged well.

I liked Dutch. The rest of his stuff just reeks of the 80s to me.

Actually, movies like Rivers Edge (murder notwithstanding) Over The Edge, Fast Times at Ridge ont High, and later stuff like Clerks much more actually captured the time, IMHO.

Fast Times at Ridgemont High actually nails it better than FBDO seem to. It's funny and escapist, but more realistic in that everyone's pessimistic about the future and everyone has a job, which none of the kids in FBDO. Plus there's topless Phoebe Cates and the famous bathroom scene.

Maryr: I meant that parts of it were escapist (like most of Spicoli's scenes), but that it was actually FAR more realistic than most teen flicks. Chalk it up to awkward phrasing.

Wherever I go in the world, people think the real scene is elsewhere
To quote another great teen flick:
"Well, all I'm saying is that I want to look back and say that I did I the best I could while I was stuck in this place. Had as much fun as I could while I was stuck in this place. Played as hard as I could while I was stuck in this place..."

"When I See You Smile" by Bad English. I've never heard of the song.
Mullet-rock makeout song. OK for what it is. Features John Waite ("Missing You") and Jonathan Cain from Journey.

I'm trying to imagine a Smiths cruise, but keep getting stalled at the vision of vegan buffets and everyone getting mopey and throwing themselves overboard.

I did read about Styx playing a cruise ship and if I was a passenger and they didn't play "Come Sail Away," as we disembarked, I'd ask for my money back.

Bon Jovi was the opening act at my first concert. Scorpions were the headliners. It rocked. The rough looking dude next to us bummed my lighter to fire up a joint but didn't offer me a hit.

(It's bad enough that I had to tell my mother what a wanker is last year. THAT was fun. Not.)
Well, not the literal meaning. But the figurative meaning, I'm sure she undertands.
