Oh no! Not butternut squash risotto again.
There's a restaurant in Victoria, BC, that mostly serves vegetarian/vegan food. Although I am not vegetarian, I cook all the time out of their fantastic cookbook (Rebar Cookbook). I cannot recommend it enough; it's a blend of styles from north american to indian to tex-mex and more. A warning though: the recipes make a LOT of food.

The Case of the Old Bike
I think frobozz has it right. You guys can afford it, he cannot - just keep telling him that you were in the wrong to borrow it anyways, and don't take his money. He IS letting you use his bike 'til the fall - you would likely feel like paying him for that rental anyways.

Geology-related gifts for new middle school teacher
A nice hand lens for looking at rocks, in a nice case. Something like:

Note: I am a geologist (IAAG?) and I can never find my handlens when I need it.

(It looks like all the hardcover dictionaries are out of print, so you might have to look at a used book store. This is the one that I have but it's not exactly a keepsake-quality book, despite being an excellent dictionary)

Are dual-US citizens required to disclose US citizenship when entering the US?
I was born in the US, moved to Canada, and got Canadian citizenship. Since the day that I got my Canadian passport (8 years ago) I have ALWAYS entered the US with it. However, it says right on the identification page "birthplace: Ohio, USA".
I have never had to get a visa. I have never been hassled at the border - in fact, typically the US Customs agents tell me "Welcome home" when I enter the US, and the Canadian agents tell me "welcome... [more]

What can we rumba to?
The band will be perfectly reliable in terms of tempo. Just let them know that it's your "first dance" song and that you don't want them to do any crazy soloing or tempo changes and they'll stick with it for you.
For a rhumba, you'd traditionally want something latin. Paper moon is going to be too fast unless you really get them to slow it down, and then it's going to drag on forever.

I think with Dells you need to download all your drivers from the Dell website. I know there's somewhere on there you can enter your service number and it'll show you just the drivers you need. Fresh downloads of all your drivers might just solve your problems.

Car noob buying used Civic, in Ontario.
Getting up and leaving is powerful. I did it 4 or 5 times when I was buying my VW. They didn't have the color I wanted on the lot, so they had to bring one in - then they tried to charge me for transporting it. Then they tried to make me pay for the extra options that were on the car that they brought me (after they had already brought it to me). Then they tried to make me pay extra for their "mandatory" security features. My legs got tired from all the getting up to leave, but I... [more]

Whether 'tis nobler in the train to suffer...
My husband and I bought eurailpasses for italy-france last summer. They were a complete and total ripoff. And don't buy it about not having to stand in line - you are REQUIRED to have a reservation to travel on most of the train lines (especially the TGV in France, which is sometimes the only train line available, like from Bordeaux to Paris). Tickets on the slow trains in Italy and France were very, very affordable and we should have just bought a la carte.

Help me devise an Easter candy recipe that will accomodate my kids' dietary restrictions.
You should be able to make "Jell-o Jiggler" candy by making double-strong gelatin with fruit juice. It sets up really firmly and you can cut out shapes (maybe use an easter-themed cookie cutter?). Just watch out for high-acid juices, like pineapple juice, because it will interfere with the gelatin's ability to set.
The fruit leather idea is also a good one.

The Planet's coffeeshop closed down and now you can only get their coffee at "we brew Planet coffee" locations. The closing of the Planet was the end of an era in Calgary.

Oh, yeah, my previous fat cat (20 lbs +) was fat and sassy 'til the day he died somewhere between 23 and 26 years old (he was a stray, so we never really knew how old he was). However, his best friend was fat and diabetic and had to be put down at 13, poor sick boy. So it really depends on the beasties. If they're happy and fat and healthy, I wouldn't stress out about it other than to switch to a better food than Iams - it's notoriously poor since they got bought out by (I think) Purina.

When I was trying to quit chewing my nails, I chewed gum all the time instead. Worked like a charm - my mouth was busy, my breath was fresh, and my nails were so nice! Of course, you have to remember to chew gum - for me, chewing my nails is so automatic that I don't even realize I've done it until hours later. I made a ritual out of it; go to next class (I was in high school), sit down, take out books / paper, have a piece of gum. It was the only way I could remember. Good luck!
