This is very cool. Oslo's a beautiful place, but hoskala's entirely correct about the beer (and everything else) being goddamn expensive..

Stop Prisoner Rape
Right from that linked article: "One in five men in prison has been sexually abused, often by other inmates. Rates for women, who are most likely to be abused by male staff, reach as high as one in four in some facilities."

The article's dated today, but the shooting happened on March 15th ("The March 15 incident almost immediately sparked an outcry in Shreveport's black community"). Is there new info here I'm missing, or is it just a slow news day in New Orleans?

Everest, the peak of drama
If you liked Into Thin Air, you should read Everest guide Anatoli Boukreev's book The Climb, which is his rebuttal of Krakauer's story. Basically, Krakauer accused Boukreev of ignoring the clients in order to further his personal goal of summiting without oxygen, and Boukreev's defense is quite an amazing story.

Oh yeah, sorry. I had to run to a meeting so my comment was terser than it should have been.
Is there evidence on that clip that it's CG, or is it just a stuffed cat? I originally thought stuffed cat, but I don't really know how to tell if something's CG (yes, I am the ideal marketing target audience..).

Iax, the original video zoomed out at the end to show that it was being recorded on a Nokia phone, then went to a Nokia splash screen. This version has that part removed.

From the article:
"O'Connor Kelly is well acquainted with the often bitter debate over balancing privacy rights with other interests. She joined DoubleClick in February 2000 after the Federal Trade Commission launched an investigation into complaints that the company was improperly storing and sharing private user data. DoubleClick also was embroiled in similar investigations by 12 state attorneys general and several class-action lawsuits.... [more]

chainmail how-to
What a gorgeous page. I taught myself to make chainmail several years ago through bad geocities pages - I'd have killed to have this level of detail available. And yes, it's boring, and my hands always smelled of metal. I eventually acquired a dent in my thumbnail from where I'd push the links closed. But hey, I've got some seriously gorgeous bracelets and thingies now - guaranteed to frighten any potential suitors with evidence of my obsessive-compulsive jewellery-making disorder (OCJMD).

Just in case someone thinks I'm a superhero, I was bending 24-gauge wire against my fingernail, not coat hanger wire.. and I bought the links premade at the local bead store.

Late Fees
My local indie video store has twice the selection of Blockbuster, snotty knowledgeable film student staffers, cheap prices, 2-for-1 rentals with my "I support the student radio station" card, a frequent-renter card (rent 5 and get the 6th half-price), AND they give me back a buck if I bring movies back early. I don't understand why my next-door neighbors still walk 10 blocks more to go to Blockbuster.

Internet radio revisited
Monkey Radio is back indeed, and he's doing an interesting survey of his listeners. He wants everyone to send in a list of all the albums they bought because of his radio station - tracks you liked, artists you'd never heard of, etc. He's trying to prove to the RIAA that net radio stations actually cause people to (gasp) go out and buy music!
Also apparently all the tracks he plays are from CDs he owns, which is pretty uncommon, I'd imagine.... [more]

I recall reading that they didn't have a Canadarm on board, so they were unable to spacewalk to check the damage. It's quite possible that this mission was not equipped with the necessities to do spacewalking.

Moleskine-ing
wanderingmind, it seems to me that the smaller the binder, the higher the price. I used to try to make notebooks for university the way you make sketchbooks, but wanted small ones. I eventually found myself raiding recycling bins for blank paper and getting the paper cut and spiral-bound at the local copy shop. You might want to do the same - the copy shops usually charge a per-cut fee to use the die cutter, which gives you nice, evenly-sized small sheets, and then a per-book charge to get the... [more]

The knitting needle issue seems to be a spot decision - sometimes they'll let me on with them, sometimes they won't. I usually ask when I check in. I note that although they won't let me have 6" wooden knitting needles, they'll still let me take pencils and pens on-board --... [more]

And of course the immense RecipeSource -- new home of the Searchable Online Archive of Recipes (SOAR). My usual method is to find 5-10 recipes for whatever dish I want to make, then mix-n-match ingredients until I come up with the Ultimate Recipe (tm).
It appears that they're still working on bringing the site over from SOAR, so please be patient if it's slow. It's worth it.

Another graft link, and an interesting thought from the grafter: "This opened up a whole range of questions I would never have considered until this came up," Macdonald said. "I myself started to wonder whether this tree will really mean the same because it's been removed from their sacred ground, propagated by us in different soil at the University of British Columbia, and then been moved back again."

I'm really sad that Electric Sheep doesn't work on Win - does anyone have anything as simply beautiful for us poor Windows (l)users? I might have to install linux now just for that 'saver.

We only played games designed to tire out children. My favorite was "donkey ball" - just like kickball but with a bat. Man, can you knock those red and green playground balls into the stratosphere with a bat! Once you'd whomped it a couple of blocks outside the schoolyard, you'd run around the bases accumulating runs until the other team got the ball back and tagged you out. We'd frequently have scores in the triple digits.

Radio Paradise is my second-favorite, behind MonkeyRadio. They play "eclectic intelligent rock" from a farmhouse in California somewhere. You can rate songs, tell the DJ why you like certain songs more than others, and see the entire playlist.
And they broadcast through winamp, NOT realplayer.
