Scheduling a 1-time future job in OSX?
If you use launchd instead of cron, I don't think you can set up a one-time job but it's easy to programatically remove the job - 'launchctl remove jobname'. You could use a script that does whatever you need it to and then removes itself from launchd, or at least disables itself.

"Reverse" firewall testing?
If you're interested in TCP ports, you don't need them to be open on the remote end -- closed ports will respond with an RST, filtered ports you'll simply never hear back from. I would suggest reading the nmap documentation.

Although I suppose I should add that the firewall could spoof RST packets from the destination, and this behavior might be the default for some firewalls.

How to get educational financial help as a truly independent young adult?
As a 22 year-old in 2004 I was in a similar situation. My parents were not uncooperative and I was able to at least supply the necessary information for the FAFSA applications, but their income combined with my income from the previous year meant I got very little aid. There was absolutely nothing I could do, short of joining the military or getting married, to get around it. The financial aid office pretty much made no effort to help because they knew there was nothing they could do.... [more]

Apache returns 404 for an existing file
Is there anything noteworthy about the directory names that don't work? What platform is this on?

I would expect files in the jsp directory to be given a special handler of some sort (like your servlet engine). Check for a 'Location /jsp ' stanza or something like that in the httpd.conf.
Yeah, on preview...angle brackets just aren't cool.

Or, like you just said and I failed to read properly, something on the oracle side is set up to handle regular HTML files on the working server, and not on the broken ones. But it you can't find that, you might get away with narrowing down what gets passed off to oracle in the first place by giving the Location tag something like /*.jsp instead of the entire directory.

Routing between subnets
Looking at the user interface demo for that USR router, I don't even see an option to stop NATing. This means the 16 bit subnet won't work. You would need to give the USR an external IP on 192.168.11.0/24, and a default route of 192.168.11.2 (I don't see how to do that...probably best to set it to use DHCP and let the DHCP server on your Dad's side take care of it. Make sure it will serve DHCP out that interface.). Both sides should have a 24-bit subnet mask. Everything on your sister's... [more]

Also, you would need to ensure that AP1 is NOT acting as a router, only bridging. If you can't make it do that, I think you'll probably have to create a third subnet between the two routers.

Sit, Firefox! Stay.... good boy.
This also happens to me on my office PC. I just alt-tab to firefox at that point, so I've never really bothered to investigate. It seems common enough to attribute it to a bug. I have 4GB of RAM, so I doubt things are really getting tight, but I do often notice FF taking up an inordinate amount of space, hundreds of MBs. I'm with tommasz on the ridiculousness of the memory consumption, but on the other hand I don't think I've seen a banner ad in six months. It might be worth it.

What's the best stout?
Brooklyn Black might be my favorite. I'm also a fan of Old Rasputin, and the Rogue and Victory stouts previously mentioned are quite good.

Oh, and also, even though it's not a stout, you should definitely try the Stone Smoked Porter that Greg Nog mentioned. It's very, very good.

computer can't load executables smoothly
You can test the ram with Memtest86. I've only ever used the ISO; download it, burn it to a CD, then boot from it. You also might try Process Explorer to see what's going on instead of Task manager. tasklist is the command-line program you're looking for, I think.... [more]

What's involved in having a mole removed?
I had a mole removed from my back several years ago. It needed to be biopsied, so I assume the procedure may be different if you're having it removed for cosmetic or other reasons. I was given a local anesthetic that involved very thin needles delivering an electric shock to the region (if anyone can tell me what this is called, I'm curious about it). The doctor removed a eye-shaped chunk of my back and sewed it up. I currently have a large, raised scar in the shape of a football. There was... [more]

Boardgames
N+1 for Settlers, of course. Thurn & Taxis is another fun Euro game. Betrayal at House on the Hill is a cooperative adventure game that has some objective shortcomings but is just so fun we tend to play over and over again. Quick fun card games include Bang, Bohnanza, and Lifeboat. I just played Roborally for the first time last week, and it seems quite promising.

Did I Trojan Myself?
Seconding submitting at least the executable to your anti-virus vendor. This sort of feedback is important to them, and it could potentially save your future users some trouble.

Whence the 35-hour work week?
In my experience, this hasn't really been that consistent. I work for a university in Boston, and for my salary I am expected to work 35 hours a week, 9 - 5 minus an hour for lunch. However, a majority of the people I know who work in the private sector work 9 to 6 or equivalent hours, at the least. It has always seemed to me to have more to do with your job and who you work for.
