MeFi post: Imagine being excited about a Paul McCartney album
The best thing about Paul recently were the headlines in The Sun for the stories regarding his concert in Israel - 'Hey Judaism' and 'Shalom and winding road'

MeFi post: An Important Angry Work Of Art
It does turn out all shiny, right?

All in the game...

Actually the program is pretty much spoiler free, unless you don't wanna know the theme of each series or things of that nature.

And it's really weird to see Jimmy talking with a British accent

fantastically hilarious televisual programme

Yes, well, err... I'm sure Dead Set (Big Brother meets Night Of The Living Dead) will be great though

Yeah, alright, I'll watch it someday...

NOW! WATCH IT NOW! IT'S YOUR CIVIC DUTY!

Yegods.

America, I hereby implore you to understand - there is no such thing as a 'British accent'.

Well as I am actually British, I'm going to say 'er, yes there is'

Ask post: What makes an old movie sound like an old movie?
The film was nominated for an Acadamy Award for Sound for Richard Portman and Gene S. Cantamessa. I found a couple of interviews but nothing were they talk about Young Frankenstein specifically

What I can remember if the film I think they probably added some crackle to the sound and it was definitely less 'spacey' than film sound is nowadays, so I imagine it was definitely mixed that way.

Ask post: Loved Oldboy ... so what next?
The original Ring is a must see - the most terrifying film I've ever watched.

I'd also recommend the work of Takashi Miike but he's probably too gory.

MeFi post: japanorama
Glad to see he's doing something for the bazillion quid they pay him, apart from a lame chat show and a lame film review show. (I actually miss the weirdo film programs he made yonks ago)

See also Adam And Joe Go Tokyo. (Which I've still not got around to watching)

MeFi post: Reality sucks. Let's escape for a little while.
A bit back I read some overview of Eragon and I was pretty stunned what a direct swipe it was from Star Wars. I'm kinda surprised George hasn't sued/there's not been more fuss about it.

And on my surcoat.

That's my first encounter of Trogdor... I've just realized there must be whole vistas of the internet that is unknown to me. How did this happen?

When I was 14, I was reading may way through all of Harry Harrisons' work oh and James Herbert's The Fog... which would probably explain a lot actually.

Ask post: Wanted: bad horror movies for good times in October
If you can get hold of one of the Violent Shit series... disclaimer, I've not actually seen any of these all the way through, but judging from clips on Youtube they look right up your street. As you might guess from the name they are totally NSFW

Alien Vs Hunter is a total Alien/Predator rip-off done with zero budget and zero talent. Many claim it's the worse movie ever made. The whole thing is on Youtube - I tried to watch it once but bailed at about 15min as it's almost agony to watch. Here's a review.

MeFi post: Standing On The Shoulders Of Giants
I actually like Oasis, well their first two albums at least. But, yeah, is that because they are just 'channeling' the good that has come before?

Oh and Liam, wearing John Lennon glasses does not actually make you John Lennon...

MeFi post: Flesh and Blood
Last year I listened to a free audio version of Dracula; the various attempts (there was a number of different readers) by non-professional American readers of the English accents was... interesting.

I read Brian Aldiss' Dracula Unbound years ago but I can't remember too much about it. Newman's various things are interesting, as mentioned up thread, but have diminishing returns as you go along... like the one set in Rome that has not plot whatsoever.... [more]

Ask post: Books To Make Time Fly
Tim Willocks for me is a very hooky writer; I read Green River Rising in one sitting. As well as Iain M, there's Iain Banks. Complicity is another book I read in one go. And Stephen Hunter (though I've kind of gone off him recently as he's a bit of a hack)... [more]

MeFi post: When the Wind Blows
I remember re-watching Threads a few months ago which that odd effort, of combining terror with nostalgia and nostalgia for the terror of living through the 80s (not least because I lived for three years in Sheffield whilst at uni)

Oh and track down The War Game. It's older, but even worse, imho.

MeFi post: The seafood lover that's hopefully not actually IN you
How about swordfish? I like it fine. But my seafood purveyor, when he goes out to dinner, won't eat it. He's seen too many of those 3ft-long parasitic worms that riddle the fish's flesh. You see a few of these babies - and we all do - and you won't be tucking into swordfish anytime soon. Anthony Bourdain

MeFi post: Horror for the casual insomniac
That makes the all-night Troma-thon I once went to a film festival seem once, seem slightly less than hard-core

I've not even got around to watching all of Lord Of The Rings back to back yet. (A friend of mine did it with some Tru Fans who paused the DVDs to play the bits from the Radio 4 drama version that the films missed out...)

This 'occult expert' is an Anthropologist - I think he did his PhD studying the practitioners of Chaos magic and Lovecraftian occult. I listened to his lectures on it last year - pretty interesting.
