How to fight a Revenue Canada imposed tax on an imported product?
Who levied the tariff: Canada Border Services Agency or Canada Revenue Agency?
I would give Border Services a call. I don't see a tariff over 20% for shoes in the regs, and I think shoe imports from the US are listed as tariff-free for importers.
Plus, look into getting a customs broker to handle this in future.

Montreal to Toronto in Feb driving filter
jasper411, I am sure you have checked the foreign student tuition fees, which are much higher than for Canadians.
I drive the 401 quite a bit (I live in Ottawa and go to school at U of T) and would echo others who suggest the train.
U of T and McGill are probably the two best schools in Canada, but they are also very large (U of T especially) and overwhelming for undergrads. You might want to look at Concordia as well (which is also mostly downtown in Montreal).

There is something called TrueCrypt 2.1, released just a couple of days ago and based in part on E4M, which some claim was open source while others say the IP is owned by the makers of DriveCrypt, SecurStar. Anyway, links to TrueCrypt:

Given past tactics, we can expect the music industry to attack all links in the "music piracy" chain. If your overseas MP3 service is sued, or even pressured, it will most likely give up its client list as part of a settlement, exposing you to possible legal action domestically. There have been cases where dealers in satellite piracy equipment have had their servers and/or URLs stolen by satellite companies (particularly Directv) after pressure was applied to the dealers' hosting... I have a colleague who is volunteering for a non-profit that distributes a lot of reference material on its Web site. They run their site on a shared host, so they have access to PHP, Perl, MySQL and so on, but not to Apache config files. Something Wiki-like seems like a good fit, but he doesn't know which wiki would be best (there are a lot) and the slash clones aren't a good fit.

There is some begging, but also fellows who follow you around and who want to "help you" somehow, especially at tourist sites like the Taj Mahal. I have never found blowing them off to work very well, so I now hire one to "assist me," or I speak French to them and pretend I don't know what is going on.
I haven't been to Bangalore, but I would never try to drive in Delhi. I have seen travel stories talking about renting a car and they make me laugh.... [more]

There are a number of options. There are services -- Live365 is probably the best known -- that will host the programming and stream it for you, for a regular monthly fee.
Another option is Shoutcast, which allows you to stream from your PC and have the resulting programming distributed multicast from a Shoutcast server. This means you need a PC hooked up and running full-time, and bandwidth will end up being a concern if you are on a cable modem.... [more]

I would suggest placing a good-sized notice on your front page that the domain is for sale... that's how I sold one of mine. I was going to list it on eBay and Afternic.com but had an excellent offer so didn't need to.

You're asking about the pre-Socratic philosophers. I'm no expert, but one way to look at them is straddling mythology and rationalism. I don't think they "pulled assumptions out of the air" as much as looked to the natural world and tried to draw conclusions about it in intuitive and very rational ways. You mention Thales's contention that the basic element of the world is water. On one level you can see this as a proto-scientific theory which can, in fact, be tested. On another level... [more]

Hmmm... Do you want to have the writer drop the content into a folder on their Windows desktop? I have seen this with some of the bloatware content management systems (Interwoven comes to mind) but I can't think of a smaller one that does this.
Andrew is right about plone... you can upload a file and have it be displayed as a content object, but as far as I remember it is removed by one step from the index... that is, you have to click twice to get to it, and it isn't... [more]

The thing is, this is not a technology problem as much as it is a cultural challenge within your organization. There have been thousands of "failed" (by various definitions) groupware implementations over the past 15 years because the assumption has been that people just need the right tool and they will start taking advantage of it. This is, in fact, almost never the case; even email and the Web had a very long adaptation curve.
One has to start with the needs... [more]

What xiffix said. I was going to recommend the Macleans feature as well.
I was a grad student in Montreal (at Concordia) for a few years in the mid-1990s. If one can't speak French then most service-type jobs are going to be tough to get. You can live there as a student without French just fine, but getting into the economy is tough. The flipside is that living in Montreal as usually been much cheaper than southern Ontario or Ottawa, where rents have been quite high for... [more]

I'm also in Ottawa with a dish in a residential area of downtown. Our experience is that if the dish is placed and aimed properly, you will have very few problems with rain fade, perhaps once or twice a year for a few minutes.
My strong advice is to make sure you have someone competent survey the site and install the thing. We've had several problems because someone was recommended to us who placed the dish in a very poor spot.
Make sure the dish... [more]

What are people's experience with LAMP versus .NET in terms of database scaling? We have just implemented a PHP-based application with an ever-growing database, and a vendor is telling us that in the long term we should look at .NET because it will scale better. I am skeptical but was wondering what others' experience was.

By far the best information I have seen online about shaving and men's skin care comes from Paula Begoun's CosmeticsCop.com. See the articles "Men's Skin Care" and "Battle Plan for Men" which are free online:
To start with, all men need a gentle, water-soluble cleanser, a gentle shave product (foam, cream, or gel), followed by a gentle, nonirritating aftershave or shaving lotion (which is actually just a masculine name for a gentle toner).... [more]

It probably goes without saying, but avoid Network Solutions. I have ended up using GoDaddy for all but one of my domains. I had several domains at Gandi at one point, but they suffered some downtime at an inconvient moment for me, and I find their interface a bit more time-consuming than I would like. My experience with Joker is that it is very difficult to transfer a domain away from them; they make you jump through hoops, and their customer support is not very good.... [more]

CunningLinguist, will you be setting up CunningLinguist.com? Because I think that name might be taken.
Anyway, after very many poor experiences with many hosts since 1994 I currently host everything at Dreamhost.com; I have been with them since 2000. Their packages are excellent and they provide mostly wonderful support, though you cannot expect any host to teach you HTML :-)

I have been looking for a long time, too. I have ended up using Yahoo! Bookmarks, and since I'm not great fan of Yahoo! these days I would like to use something else. And what stonerose said. Bulk good, freezer good....
The main challenge is that convenience foods are, well, so convenient, and planning and preparing meals is time-consuming and something that not everyone enjoys.
Be more aware of what is in convenience foods you are eating and track how much you are spending on them. Take the time to read lables, and keep a log for a month of what you are spending on food, and learn about what you are eating.
