Ask post: But... my dog *has* a job. She loves me!
I understand that you love your dog. Not as much as some people love their children, but a lot. I don't plan on having children, and I do enjoy companionship, so I understand the draw of a dog. Many of my favorite memories involve dogs with whom I've lived over the years.

Having said that, if I was dating someone whose child was constantly trying to lick my face, I would ask them to move their child away from me, no matter how much they loved that child. Particularly if... [more]

Ask post: Am I just happier being single?
I just got out of a two-year monogamous relationship that came close on the heels of a five-year monogamous relationship. I'm single, and I'm happier than I've been in a long, long time.

Not everyone is meant to be partnered, and I've come to realize that I have neither the skill nor the desire to be someone's boyfriend. Being single might not be for everyone, but if you're the sort of person who thrives on it, you will do no favors to yourself or the people around you... [more]

Ask post: Are threesomes worth it?
The short answer is: Sometimes.

My advice:

Make absolutely certain that everyone involved has roughly equal levels of attraction to one another, because while being the "pivot point" in the interaction sounds great on paper, it's a lot of work and will almost certainly guarantee that at least one of the people involved will be left out of the action for at least part of the time.

If you're in a relationship, or... [more]

Ask post: How do they get them on the B*ngBus?
I have friends who have worked in the business (on both sides of the camera), and it's not the way that you seem to think. There's a lot less "reality" happening there than you seem to credit. I guarantee you, 99% of the "amateur" girls being offered $200 on-camera are in fact professionals who have worked out significantly larger sums of money off-camera beforehand. If the "first timer who's never done anything like this before but really needs rent... [more]

Ask post: anxiety and dietary supplements
I used to take 5-HTP extensively. I didn't notice any sexual side effects, but it did tend to make me a bit drowsy, so I limited my use to right before bed. Also, I recall that my dreams during that period of time were much more vivid, although that could be the result of me suddenly being more aware of my sleeping habits.

Note: I was not taking 5-HTP for anxiety. I was using it to offset the side effects of certain recreational chemicals that I used in those days. Your... [more]

Ask post: How do I best look after a friend who purchased a gun?
I don't know how it is that you came to find out that your friend had purchased a gun, but that makes a big difference in the way that I think you should approach the situation.

Did he tell you that he had purchased a gun? If so, then it's a subject that he's probably willing to discuss further. Ask him why he decided to buy a gun (and give him a fair chance of explaining; don't make the question an accusation). He might have an explanation that... [more]

Ask post: What can I cook sans-stove?
If you have a crockpot and ingredients, there's really nothing more you need in life. I've managed to get amazing results with this recipe, and it doesn't require much in the way of preparation or ingredients.

Ask post: AlternaPod
Thanks for the advice so far, as a tie-in, how can we tell when a download site is legal and when it isn't? I mean, I feel safe in assuming that the sites listed here are legal, but if I'm doing a Google search and I find a download site that looks good, how can I tell whether or not the downloading on it is legally sound?

Ask post: Wireless Than Perfect
That was helpful, dereisbaer, although the ThinkPad that we're using is older and apparently needs to use Fn+F5. Alas, even when we use it and turn the Wireless Radio to On, the wireless symbol doesn't light up and we still can't get it working. Is there something here that I'm missing?

We've attempted hitting Repair, and each time we attempt it it runs through before giving us the following message:

Windows could not finish repairing the problem because the following action cannot be completed:
Connecting to the wireless network.

For assistance, contact the person who manages your network.

Any thoughts on this?

We haven't tried reinstalling the drivers. The thing is, we were having the same problem on the computer that I'm using to post this as well, but then we were able to get it fixed, so I don't think that it's a issue with a crash, because this computer never crashed. For some reason, the solution that worked for this computer isn't working for the other one.

Are you able to connect to the same wireless router from a different machine?

Yeah, I'm using that router to post this right now.

Ask post: We grow tired of Risk, but are always up for a risk.
I recently played Last Night on Earth, and I'll be damned if it isn't one of the most enjoyable, beautifully designed games that I've played in years. Lots of teamwork-based strategy in games with many players, but it's just as much fun with two players (the minimum) as it is with six (the maximum).

Note: Experience so far has suggested that the game is weighted in favor of the zombies, but that's something that it appears might be mitigated once a little bit of... [more]

Ask post: National Health
I'd seen that map, but unfortunately I can't cite a user-made wikipedia map as a source for this project. I browsed the sources in the attached wiki article, but I wasn't able to find what I needed. Thanks for the tip, though.

Ask post: Mind-melting scenarios...
Relax, it's not a big deal. I mean, you don't want to make a habit of it, because it sort of prevents things from continuing, but it's hardly something about which to freak. Hell, I once climaxed with zero sexual desire involved. I was watching television, I found something funny, and I laughed so hard that I came. That was awkward, let me tell you.

Ask post: How to avoid getting screwed by writer's strike?
I work for the DGA, which is not at all the same entity, but we hear some things. The speculation that I've heard from people inside the community is that the strike will probably be a short one. It's going to be an interesting couple of years for the industry in general, though, because in addition to the WGA negotiating this year, the DGA and SAG will both be making revisions in 2008. Even if the WGA strike goes by quickly, there's the potential for DGA and SAG strikes to slow up business next... [more]

Ask post: In a past life I was a sylph.
The Wheel of Time series by the recently deceased Robert Jordan has quite a bit of reincarnation worked into the plot, if I'm recalling correctly.

Ask post: What the hell is wrong with my brother?
20 years old is an age where a person is facing a lot of new sets of responsibilities without really having any experience with facing the consequences of failing at those responsibilities. Fucking up is a normal part of the process.

I may just be projecting from my own personal history, but I wouldn't be surprised if there was some drinking/drug use involved in his recent rash of problems. Don't worry too much about it, I know a lot of people who went through it,... [more]

Ask post: Cornhole
Thanks for the answers, everyone. I might try this little experiment, but jchgf's link provided me with all the information that I really needed.

I was pretty sure that a week of nothing but corn would be too short a period of time to give me any serious problems, but I figured a second opinion wouldn't hurt. In my younger, more foolish days, poor financial planning resulted in me spending six days eating nothing but (uncondimented) Eggo waffles and Cadbury Cream Eggs.... [more]

Ask post: Geographic location for consistently comfortable weather?
Pasadena: Lies! I remember one winter when it rained, hard, for three months straight. Also, when it's sunny, you're lucky if there isn't a cloud of smog hovering over the place, trapped by the San Gabriels.

Seconded. I grew up in Pasadena, and it is miserable from July through the middle of September. Moving a closer to the shore, though, and you're set. I've lived up and down the West Coast, and I've never found weather as agreeable as you'll find in Santa Monica.
