Keep My Love in Amber

I played all the tracks, and billiebee came up with a melody and lyrics based on a Yeats poem, "The Lake Isle of Innisfree". It's about bees.

Dr Matt [The In Out cover]

A song we played when I was in The In Out circa 1994-1996, but I don't know if they ever recorded it after I departed. So I decided to cover it twenty years later.

What Happens Next?

Challenge: Do what scares you? I'm scared of death and the concept of eternity. While I'm NOT about to DO that, I could write a song distilling my fears about said subject matter, yes? Yes. OK, it's a deal, then.

The Challenge Is This

I needed this challenge to get away from the song I've been slowwwwly working on otherwise. I recorded some of it last year, but heavily edited and added onto it last night, and then trimmed it down to a slim fifty-seven seconds. Song 14 in my Unu Kanto Po Semajno series.

God Only Knows [Beach Boys cover]

A song that was sung at a wedding yesterday [MeTa thread]. Since I couldn't be there myself, I recorded this version for you using your officiant's restrung banjolin, a classical guitar, electric bass, my voice, and a tin slide whistle.

Distant Past

Jessamyn bought me a really nice sounding small guitar, twenny bux with all the trimmings! I'd also just bought a really sweet Yeti Blue mic off Craigslist for $25. What a bargain! So this is how I tested the two out.

Computer World [Kraftwerk cover]

Featuring the voice of greenish as the Computer. I thought it would be fun to do it slower, using mostly analog instruments and a computer to record it, in juxtaposition to how Kraftwerk originally recorded it in 1981 (using computer instruments and I'm guessing analog tape). Also I was feverish with Lyme Disease while I recorded it. Song #11 in Unu Kanto Po Semajno.

Nyaee'aiiiem

Song #10 in Unu Kanto Po Semajno was an attempt to create some soothing ambient music, like blips and bleeps you'd hear on SomaFM's Space Station channel. However, It came out a twisted mutant, as you will discover. Wellpp, keep MeFi weird! Go ahead... press play, close your eyes and relaaaax.....

I Met John Fahey in a Safeway

#9 in my Unu Kanto Po Semajno series (42 to go!) was going to have lyrics about meeting John Fahey at an autograph signing meet & greet-type event at a Safeway supermarket, where he was signing copies of his new cereal called Homegas. A conversation ensues, and then the chorus was the advertising jingle for Homegas cereal. It never got that far though, 'cause I decided I liked the music better this way and in my mind's ear, rather than to try and jam that much story into such a short timeframe. Also, time to move on!

Well Well

For song #8 of Unu Kanto Po Semajno, we answer the question, "What happens when not_on_display figures out he can just drag .mp3's into Garageband and manipulate them?" Some funky goddamn psychedelic shit, you'd better believe.

Mississippi River (feat. greenish) [cover of orig. by Izintombi Zodumo]

For GregNog's Mefi Cover Challenge and Song #7 in the Unu Kanto Po Semajno collection, I roped greenish and her awesome set of pipes all the way in from across the ocean!

Warmup Jam

This was recorded by the band I'm in (Ghost Flowers) on August 1, 2013, at our practice space before the actual practicing-of-songs started. It's a thirteen-minute variation on one chord, has nice ebbs and flows, and has a steady mid-tempo beat. [Not part of my "Unu..." series, just filler while I juggle four songs of that at once.]

Beach Pajama Party!

Song #6 in my less-and-less-aptly-named Unu Kanto Po Semajno series. Kinda poppy and abstract... you know those old Beach & Surf movies of the late 1950's, early 1960's -- the kind starring Annette Funicello and Frankie Avalon? Or like, Sally Field in Gidget? This is the kinda music I'd wanna dub over the original score.

Keep Your Hands to Yourself (Georgia Satellites cover, Interpolated with "The Theme to The Great White North" and Bob Dylan's "I Shall Be Free No. 10")

...in Sleng Teng Riddim style, no less. Song #5 in my Unu Kanto Po Semajno series. IT'S SUPPOSED TO BE SILLY.

KOFF KOFF SHHH

For song #4 in my Unu Kanto Po Semajno project, I assembled clips from a BBC Sound Effects CD in a rhythmic way. It's a duet! Possibly NSFW.

Donald Trump is a Fascist Asshole Pig

It cannot be emphasized enough. Song #3 in my Unu Kanto Po Semajno series steals one from the Dead Kennedys' playbook.

I Love Trash

Song #2 in my Unu Kanto Po Semajno series, where I am attempting to record one song per week in 2016. This song represents the period of Jan 9 through Jan 22. (I'm already off by a week, but I'll catch up.)

The Question and the Answer

A short instrumental I wrote on the bass in 1989, but never got around to recording until now. This is song #1 in my series "Unu Kanto Po Semajno" where I plan to record approximately one song per week during 2016. This song covers the period January 1 through January 8.

Procession

I am aiming for "grand, yet subdued". I see all sorts of magnificent people and dignified creatures parading slowly by.

Nightmare Tunnel

Loops of slow disorienting guitar noises, and other sound wierdness. Sections fade in and out of one another, building and cresting. I picture it akin to an adult version of riding on Willy Wonka's fucked-up boat ride.

Who the Fuck You Think You Are, and Where Do You Get Off?

I always wanted to try writing a song that leaned towards Bhangra. This owes a lot to Surjit Bindrakhia's "Dupatta Tera Sat Rang Da". However, instead of becoming a song about a beloved's beautiful scarf, this came out as an angry screed against politicians of all parties and nations, and maybe filtered through Butthole Surfers or PiL.

B'doo Deh Du

Dance-Rock Late-70's-type Instrumental. Maybe if Thin Lizzy and the Talking Heads were commissioned to write the theme song to CHiPs? The only lyrics are "B'doo deh du" and "Bah-Bah-Bah-Bomp!"

Those Aren't Poodles [Greg Nog cover]

I had the day off. I heard the previous song. I started singing it my head like this. I had to share. I am still in my jammas. I am a recalcitrant dog misidentifier, but I'm better known for considering all animals and some human babies gender-neutral.

Theme from "Flood"

Why is the world about to fall in love all over again? Why will we be marching hand in hand? Why are the ocean levels still rising up? It's a brand new record for 2015: MetaFilter's cover of They Might Be Giants' classic album, Flood!

Canned Beans

I needed to pare down so that my stuff didn't sound like a melange of instruments crowded into a closet. I thought, "CAN." This song happened. Then I thought, "Beans." Hence the name of this song. Minimalist happy grüverock.

Safe and Sound [Capital Cities cover]

Jessamyn asked me to cover this song a long time ago, and I set about it at a snails pace. It's finally done! (Sorry it took so long, darlin.) It started out in my mind as, "What if New Order or the Cure covered it?", and it turned out sounding like me covering it. I worked more over the past month to make sure it sounded the way I wanted it to, and I learned a lot about Garageband along the way. I'm kinda proud of it. And I'm glad it's over.

The Long Way

Part 1 was recorded in 1989 on a four-track, one take per track, the day I bought a Digitech DSP-128 Plus effects rack from Building #191/6. (Thanks, Hurricane Hugo!) Part 2 was recorded two days ago in one take using a Boss ME-70 effects pedal. I love delay.elay.lay.ay.y..

Interesting Times

Written because I am finally starting to get back into recording stuff, and I needed to give myself a simple project to stretch my muscles. So I told myself to write a Stereolab song circa 1994. I haven't listened to Stereolab for few years. Now That I've recorded this, I'm gonna go back and listen to them.

Keep Your Hands to Yourself (Sketch 1a) (Georgia Satellites cover)

This — and not my post from a year ago — was actually the first sketch of my cover of "Keep Your Hands To Yourself". Be warned, this is not pretty, more like a scribble on a wet napkin than a drawing. It's first-take everything, rushed, and I think it was my first stab at using GarageBand. (Everything before that had been made with Audacity or 4-track.)

A Birthday Song (Older and Wiser)

I asked Jessamyn what she wanted for her birthday, and she asked me to write a sincere song for her. I just finished the recorded version, but I did get to sing it to her, live and in the middle of the woods, on her actual birthday. NOW THAT'S SINCERE!

Na Na, Hey Hey (Kiss Him Goodbye) [Steam cover]

If, at a meetup, bondcliff hadn't pointed out this month's music challenge to me, I might have covered this song eventually anyway.
But since it's this month's challenge, and since bondcliff and I were born on the same day/month/year (same city and same first and middle name, too), I decided, hey, why not do a nutty, rushed job on it instead so that it actually means something.

Buffalo

Of the songs that my band recorded recently [previously 12], this is my favorite. It's also the most difficult for us to play. But that's what practice and cheap recording is for, yeah?

Everywhere With Helicopter (feat. jessamyn; Guided By Voices cover)

So, what was it, November when the MeFi Challenge was unofficially "requests for covers from other MeFites"? But this goes even further back... sometime last summer, Jessamyn said she wanted to do a cover--with me!--of Guided By Voices' "Everywhere With Helicopter." "OK," I said, "but you have to sing and make jangly noises with things around your apartment."

I Like The Music [slightly NSFW lyrics]

A song written and recorded on my Tascam Porta-05 sometime around 1992-3. I've slowed it down about 25% to give it a more lazy feel. Mostly about music and how I feel about it.

Eleven

Fulfilling two of the Challenges for July: Wildcard (music you hate = techno) and Music (ripped off James Bond Theme riff). Also, going for the trifecta, it's a cappella (June's Style Challenge). And it's still July 31st in some parts of the world, so I think this should be allowed in the door.
