Studying Really Pays Off!
I'm not entirely opposed to the idea, mainly because I don't see anything inherently wrong with motivation. Trying to tell people what their motivations should be, and therefore ignoring motivations that could actually work, doesn't make sense to me. It seems reasonable to me that for someone from a financially disadvantaged background, money might be a powerful motivator.
What keeps me from being actually sold on it is the thought that perhaps we... [more]

Maybe I'm just in a bad mood, but I just watched it and I am still wondering when the funny starts.
So, he just keeps mentioning vaguely double-entendre names? Is that it? What?
Well, yeah, but either you find the names themselves funny enough to carry the joke, or you don't.
I did, and I sat here laughing so hard I sounded like a wheezing 3-pack-a-day smoker. Good thing I'm by myself.

$150 a barrel here we come
As a matter of fact, if we as English speakers decide the name Colombia becomes Columbia in English, then that is exactly what it becomes.
Except this isn't an issue of a country's name being translated into another language, as in the case of United States/Estados Unidos. Calling Colombia "Columbia" is just a misnomer and an all-out mistake.

If you didn't chuckle at "You send me crumpled dollar bills, I'll send you change" you're a godless communist and probably a Lie-beral.
Okay, I admit I smiled at that one.
But just a smile. No chuckles.

It's not realistic enough. It's missing a big wastebasket where the agent with the big wand can carelessly chuck potentially-deadly confiscated items, such as bottles of water and tubes of toothpaste.

I agree that Garfield is a particularly good choice precisely because of Jon was a pretty sad character to begin with.
I used to love Garfield when I was kid. Not really sure why. But even when I was 8 I felt really sad for Jon. He seemed lonely and alienated. His only friends where a dog, a cat, and a John Oates looking-dude. When not at home, he ate alone at a diner. His dates were disasters, mainly because he was so over-eager.
Maybe I read... [more]

Slow Death Captured on a Blog
Thank you for posting this. Even though it is, indeed a very emotional read, it's something that I know I should look at. My grandmother is in advanced stages of ALS, and in what I have read so far in this blog, I feel like it gives me a bit of insight into what might be going on in her mind.

I'm not sure why Obama's health care coverage is seen as half-assed. I, personally, am not convinced that mandates are the way to go when it comes to health care (and Hillary is basing her plan on mandates). More than once, during the Democratic debates, both Clinton and Edwards (but Edwards, more so) pointed out that they all have a goal of providing coverage to Americans, but just have different plans. Mandates vs a voluntary-but affordable program are simply different plans aiming to cover... [more]

It is tragic that a woman who has worked so hard, for so long may be denied her shot, but she may be too late. She’s certainly not able to adapt well.
It seems, however, that a lot of people, especially those younger than the baby boomers, think the existing system (national debate, political environment) is poison. She doesn't seem to get that.
I agree, bonehead. (Heh, that sounds funny). She got as far... [more]

Ugh, Paul Krugman has been relentless in bashing Obama. He is hardly a neutral observer here. He also wrote a column falsely accusing Obama of praising republicans, which if you watch Lessig's video, you can see is false."
It is especially ridiculous seeing as Hillary listed Reagan as one of her favorite Presidents in a recent press release.

I've often thought that women today in their 20's and 30's are living in extended adolsecence in their own way. I know way too many women in that age bracket who still watch My Super Sweet Sixteen, The Hills, Laguna Beach, (insert show about teenagers here). But if they're married, I guess that's okay.

Beny Moré, golden voice of Cuba
I can definitely say that he is well-known and admired in Puerto Rico. He was a favorite of my grandmother's.
One of his classics, Bonito y sabroso, was sampled a few years ago into a Latin-rap-type song -- whether you like the sample is one thing, but it shows that Beny is still remembered by younger generations.

Google is “white bread for the mind" says professor
This professor shows a serious deficieny in reasoning skills.
If you don't want students using Wikipedia as a source (which is understandable), then simply tell them so. Also, this could be a great exercise in teaching students to properly vet their sources before using them in a paper. But I guess pooping on Google takes a lot less effort.

Moveon Facebook
Maybe people, for the most part, like and enjoy Facebook, but dislike a particular feature. I use it as a central location to keep up with family members who are far away (which is 99% of my family) - we talk to each other, we post pictures, we comment on the pictures. For the most part, I'm fine with Facebook. So why would I just up and leave it if one thing about it bothers me, rather than make the attempt to get that one thing fixed?
That being said, I'm still not... [more]

Well, dead_, you did imply I was a sheep, so....yeah. I think that's why I surmised that the point of your post was to imply that I should be doing things the way you see fit.
The point I was trying to make is that making the attempt to fix something is, to me, preferable than just abandoning it and moving on -- especially if in general, it's something that works for you.

flarbuse - yes, we use mail, but by setting up a (private) Facebook group, there is a spot where tons of pictures can be dumped and we can add comments about them, where conversation threads can be started, etc. I suppose we use email for more specific, one-on-one conversations, while in this group 12 of us converse. I don't know, it seems to be a one-stop kind of thing that so far, is working just fine.

It would be pretty rad to have a "Love" key, though. The question is, does it retrieve love, or send it?
See, I'd find that infinitely depressing. At 8, they'd already think that love comes and goes through their computer.

I might have enjoyed reading about his experiences if he sounded a little bit less impressed with himself. Not so much with the fact that he did what he did, but his whole view of his accomplishment and himself. If by "work", you mean getting the actual truth out of a person, then, no torture has probably rarely worked. But I don't think torture is really used in order to extract truth from someone; rather, it's meant to elicit the response that the torturer wants, the one that will further his agenda.

re: the old west in Almeria, Spain.... There's a Spanish movie named 800 Bullets that takes place in the remnants of the spaghetti western movie sets that were put up in Almeria. Old stuntment who were in the original films take over the ruins to stage their versions of Clint Eastwood-movie stunts. It's a comedy, not a documentary or anything, but it's interesting to see how these movie sets become part of the landscape.

Maybe they figure the outside world will taint them, and they are making double-extra-super-sure that they can get into heaven.
