MeFi post: Sarah Palin may be a better debater than you think
(go read about Andrew Jackson - dumb as a post, an unabashed redneck hick who prided his little, little brain on his being a sort of Joe Sixpack, and he was impeached due to is total incompetence)

It was Andrew Johnson, not Andrew Jackson, who was impeached.

MeFi post: I'm sure the NRA will have something to say about this
But as it sits - look at how it’s being done NOW.
Not in theory, not in the ideal - RIGHT NOW - police in D.C. are going door to door looking for permission to search people’s homes to look for guns.
Got that?
Cops. Knocking on your door. Asking if you’ve got something to hide. Looking to search your house. Because maybe you’ve got a gun.

No, they aren't. There were plans in place for this to happen but it appears... [more]

Ask post: How's office 2007?
I got it for free from the University and I can understand why. I do not even have that old of a laptop and sometimes, especially if I have multiple browser windows open in Firefox, it lags badly to the point where I am almost convinced I am going to have to restart the computer. I started to type out that the line spacing bugged one of my professors after the class turned in our first papers but then I remembered it was not that that annoyed him (rather it just annoyed me, who would want 1.15... Ask post: Why aren't U.S. Presidential Primary elections all on the same day?
But smackfu, Florida and Michigan did not go before New Hampshire. They both went after. However, the problem is they considered that they went too close after.

I agree with Atreides if we are going to let small states go first, you should rotate which small states those are. There are plenty of other states that only have small voices in the House of Representatives besides New Hampshire and Iowa.

The other thing I would also change would be... [more]

Oh, sorry, meant to hit preview. The first they should be the DNC and the second they should refer to Florida and Michigan.

Ask post: Seeking stories of kids with superpowers?
Tangent but, davidmsc, they remade the Tomorrow People in the 90s and episodes used to air on Nickelodeon on Saturday afternoon. At least I think it was a remake, the show didn't look like it was from the 70s. i liked it except they kept showing the same two stories over and over again and I would always miss part of other one (the story would stretch over 4 or 5 episodes.)

I have been doing research for a road trip and this site http://www.roadtripusa.com/index.html
has some interesting ideas that you may be able to piece together.

Ask post: Will my ridiculously crushed fingers heal on their own or am I going to be left with reduced sensation and function?
You think that is a ridiculous way to get a finger injury, the tip of my right ring finger was once crushed by a lottery machine (if you really want to know how I will tell you since it did not involve anything illegal). Man did that hurt. They couldn't believe that I started laughing because otherwise, I was going to start crying from the amount of pain. You went to medical school for awhile, you have to know there are a lot of nerve endings there.... [more]

I did not mean bend it back (not double jointed) I meant, like bending it to make a claw like motion (like a cat swiping) or a fist.

Ask post: Blacklist disapproving parents to wedding?
What does her fiance think? Is he leaving it all on her whether or not her parents are invited or has he expressed an opinion either way?
posted to Ask Metafilter by lilacorlavender at 8:44 PM on December 7, 2007
First of all, I do not think it would be him being selfish if he comes and says that he does not want them there. It is his wedding day too, which is why I was curious if he had expressed an opinion.

I was previewing but I was going to suggest like jacquilynne that BOTH of them go to her parents and tell them they are engaged. Gage their reaction and react appropriately from there.

The reason why I have been previewing is I am still trying to... [more]

But it is not up to her parents to correct that assumption anyways. It is up to her to say "Grandma, I am not going to be an engineer. I am going to be doing Y. Let me tell you about it and how much I enjoy it."

Plus, I just looked at the original question closer. How much of his family (the future in laws) are being invited versus how much of hers? Are they thinking of inviting the grandparents on her side etc.?

I did not mean to go too far off on a tangent. I interpreted somethings you wrote a little differently but now I have a bigger picture. I was going to try and suggest that if one of her relatives was going to come, maybe they could help the parents behave but that's not applicable.

The only other suggestion I have is if there is one of the parents that has shown more reason (which does not seem likely in this situation but think about what has happened) go to that... [more]

Ask post: Holiday in a nursing home
Homemade Christmas cards that the children decorated before hand. Or some other kind of small decoration. I used to love using styrofoam balls to make ornaments. Decorate liberally with glitter or not as messy, use sequins and ribbons and pin them in place.

Ask post: All I want for Christmas... is a hotel
I had a similar experience. I was barely 18 and it was three am and I had driven all night to take placement tests over the next two days at UMBC, just outside of Baltimore. When I got to the Days Inn, which had been secured on my mother's credit card in advance over the phone, the clerk told me in the future, that their policy was that I was supposed to be 21, but he let me check in. Like chips ahoy advised, I stayed polite and calm despite the hour but unlike jeffamaphone, I did have a... [more]

Ask post: support our troops with extreme noise terror
I am going to go in an opposition direction. My grandmother told me the story of how her father used to wake her and her siblings in the morning. He would blast things like the 1812 overture and other pieces that had a lot of trumpets. She hated it because it would immediately make her jump out of bed and onto the cold floor. So think trumpets, lots of trumpets.

Ask post: Found very old paycheck. How can I claim the money?
The company I worked for reissued me paychecks if they were not cashed within six months (including one time that I did not even realize that I hadn't deposited the check). I am fourthing going to the unclaimed property department because every time before they would reissue me the check, before they could, they had to have me sign a paper because if their records did not reflect that I had claimed the money with a certain amount of time (I am blanking on whether it was another six months or a... Ask post: Help me protect my stuff
What kind of lock is on the door? Is it the type that automatically locks behind you either way and you have to manually unlock it or do you have to lock it every time you come and go from the room? Because if it is the latter type, try to see if the housing department or campus security can have it changed to one that automatically locks. That's what I have so I don't have to worry about the door being unlocked since it just stays locked at all times. If she is unlocking it when she is coming... [more]

This is my first (and hopefully last year) staying in a dorm at this university or at least, this particular building. The information about being fined for having anything on the other side of the room came from my suitemate who got one last year for having a sweater on the bed on the other side of the room. I really do not mind not having anything there since a) I am not here most weekends, b) I don't really have a lot of stuff here, c) I figure I wouldn't have the space anyway if someone had... [more]

I go to school in New York. I am from Connecticut. Some of the suggestions have led me to try and find the handbook they gave me. I cannot currently find the exact one for living in the university housing but this is the fire code information from the general student handbook, edited down to exclude the information on blocking the doors, trees in the building(?!), candles, smoking, and malicious fire alarms.

University policies relating to fire safety are in according... [more]

You caught me mmascolino. Thanks for finding that. I knew I read the bit about extension cords somewhere else besides in the fire code and there it is on the list in letter v.

backseatpilot, I think that will be perfect. I can hang it from the dresser. The cord will be long enough, and if they try and count it as an extension cord, I promise to try and fight them on it.
