MeFi post: The Lost Films of Orson Welles
XMLicious, you mean The Brain. And how much he sounds like Orson Welles.

They actually played up the similarities in a couple of episodes, including one directly parodying the infamous 'Welles gets angry at his voiceover directions while reading a commercial for peas' clip. The voice of the Brain, Maurice LaMarche, also dubbed over Vincent D'Onofrio as Orson Welles in Tim Burton's Ed Wood.

Ask post: Help me make delicious turnovers
Seconding SalteƱas, a Bolivian relative of the empanada. My wife addicted me early on and I still can't get enough of these. (Apparently neither can Bolivians, my wife told me they were cheap and fantastic in La Paz and Cochabamba and sold as soon as they came out of the oven.)

Being a gringo I probably can't do them justice, but inside there is usually some slow-cooked meat, peas, chunks of potato, hard-boiled egg slices and raisins, along with various and sundry other... [more]

Ask post: Lonely movie seeks mate for night of incredible synergy
Several people have offered up pairings with Juno, but i think that
Ghost World and Juno
would be an excellent combination to show the difference between 90s quirky indie movies with precocious main characters and 2000s quirky indie movies with precocious main characters.

Aliens/Predator/AVP
In the Mood for Love and 2046 (These movies feature the same characters and, IIRC, 2046 is essentially a story written by the main... [more]

Ask post: Saul Williams-esque
I would definitely recommend checking out Saul Williams' older stuff, particularly his album produced by Rick Rubin (Amethyst Rock Star).

Nthing MF Doom, El-P and the rest of the people on the Def Jux label. My personal favorite of the bunch, which hasn't been mentioned yet, is Cannibal Ox. Their album, The Cold Vein, is one of the [IMO] best rap albums in the last 15 years. (I've heard people call it the Ok Computer of hip hop.) As a bonus, it was... [more]

MeFi post: The Bible According to Google Earth
Well, I fully expect to see these embedded in an email forward from a conservative Christian relative by the end of the month.

In other news, the Creative Review blog is fantastic. Especially when you can't afford the 64 pounds (~$130) per year to subscribe.

Ask post: Wii need some Wii's!
Thirding the "check big box stores early Sunday morning" idea. We eventually got one by camping out in front of a Circuit City for several hours on a Sunday morning. I found this tutorial especially helpful when looking for a Wii. The key was this forum, where they posted early versions of the Sunday sale ads for big box stores. If there was a Wii in the ad, they would have some in the store when they opened Sunday morning. Watch out, though, some people can be pretty cutthroat.... [more]

Ask post: Seeking technical directions for making a mix CD.
Make sure you go through iTunes preferences, into Advanced and into Burning to make sure iTunes is set to automatically burn your playlist as an audio cd. Also, you might want to turn off that annoying 2-second gap between songs to make your transitions sound their best.

Ask post: How can I avoid the freshman fifteen?
My few secrets for not pudging out (too much) during college were as follows:

Ultimate Frisbee. (I had friends who played once a week and I would run so hard that it killed me, but I loved it.)

No eating after 8pm. (this is hard normally, and nearly impossible during those high-stress times like finals, but keeping it as a general rule can keep you from late-night bad eating like ice cream and Taco Bell)

Walk everywhere... [more]

MeFi post: Amos Paul Kennedy, Jr.
Hand-set type looks amazing printed up nicely like that. I especially enjoy some of their layered compositions, like this one.
