I'm an old pro at the pretending-like-I'm-staying-at-fancy-hotels game. It's great!
I never thought of it as a date activity, but that's pretty clever.

A lot of temp agencies will help people find full-time jobs [and some that don't suck too hard, even].
Sure, they'll take a huge chunk of the pie, etcetera, but if the aim is to definitely get a job of some sort right away, try 2 or 3 of the biggest temp agencies around and see who finds the best offer.

Help me become an amateur cobbler.
I tried to make shoes once ["how hard could it be?" I said], but was defeated by ineptitude.
It's harder than it looks, but I'm sure that it's possible. I highly recommend not starting with leather. If I were trying again right now I would build a shoe out of something like cardboard and newspaper, then graduate to something stiffer like canvas and [probably still cardboard, or maybe rubber].

I know that the art seems really arcane and kind of useless, but sharpening straight razors is the way of champions. With proper stropping technique, sharpening doesn't need to be done very often at all, which makes the actual sharpening a ritual you can look forward to.

Just in case there's a really cheap and easy option... take the holder with you to the grocery store / drug store and see if the straight razor blades [sometimes they're double-sided, sometimes single sided] that they sell next to the disposable razors might happen to fit.
