It took over 15 years, but the Web has finally reached the apex of its evolution.

Olbermann and Matthews demoted
Making Olbermann an anchor is as legit as making O'Reilly an anchor. Neither belong in such a roll. KO should've stuck to sports -- he had more credibility there.

Oh, come on. Bill O makes Olbermann look like Walter Cronkite.
But is O'Reilly considered an anchor? Everyone knows what he's about, and what side he's on. He's a host. When Olbermann's on his other show, he's a host. Editorializing is perfectly acceptable -- and expected -- on his show, but not when playing the role of anchor.

Diddy needs oil
Diddy's "McCain is bugging" video, coupled with Fergie's appearance in Denver, have me thinking I should vote Republican.

Silly pencil pushers! You can't KILL Physics! What's that? Oh, physics *research*. You've won this round!
I worked for a business unit of AT&T that was created to support a specific technology that came out of Bell Labs, and we worked closely with the Holmdel teams over the years. That same technology has since been spun out and taken public and is the basis for a successful data management company. The first web site I ever saw was in Holmdel, circa 1994. Loads of innovation, talent, dedication. I always felt thoroughly stupid when I left there.

Pascal Bernabe breaks a scuba record – 330 meters below the Mediterranean!
We typically rank nitrogen narcosis incidents by martinis, as in "I had a two-martini narc at 130 feet." It can be amusing, but also very dangerous. At depth, oxygen can be toxic, hence the mixes.
1100 feet. Sweet Jesus. I've done hundreds of dives, and will always consider 170 feet to be extremely deep. The listing of the gas mixes alone is crazy.

I got a headache later on but to this day I wonder why I didn't die of a massive embolism.
No chamber ride after that? Glad you didn't get hit! Scary, rocketing from 120 fsw.

40 MPH Heat
We've morphed into a nation of namby-pamby, all-inclusive, everyone-wins, grab-yer-juicebox fatties with helicoptering mommies who make sure that we get playing time and never lose. Even when we do. We suck.

Parents have an amazing capacity to make baseball suck.
Parents have an amazing capacity to make all youth sports suck. And it gets better as they get older and the stakes are greater. I had a front-row seat as two fathers of 18 year-old girls/women got into a fist fight at a soccer game. Best of all -- they were from the same team.

That unfortunate incident conjured up an old and highly disturbing (and related) injury suffered by another weightlifter. (Warning: NSFW Rotten.com link...sorry...)
Now that took some straining.

George Carlin Dead at 71
As 12 year olds, my cousin and I shared a cassette of "Class Clown," which we played over and over and over til we had the entire thing memorized. We laughed as hard the last time as we did the first time.
Years later, we caught him live, and when some older folks got offended early in the act, we took advantage and jumped in their front-row seats. He quickly pointed this out -- "Look at these young fuckers -- you might say they're cheap assholes, but... [more]

I had to send an audio link to "Join the Book Club" to a some friends today. How can you hear the title, "How to Fillet a Panda" and not laugh. Thanks to whoever posted that above; I missed it the first time around.
I remember sitting alone in a San Francisco hotel room, watching him on HBO, and laughing so hard I thought security would come a-knockin' or I'd stroke out or piss my pants or something. And he was that good every time.... [more]

Ice Cream Man, On My [Friggin'] Street ...
They were welcome when I was a kid -- more than welcome. A white truck, with a white-gloved, uniformed gent behind the wheel who gently pulled a cord in the vehicle that rang the silver bells that were lined up above the windshield. We heard the bells, and ran.
Today, as a parent, I kinda sorta resent the cranky, unintelligible ass who drives at snail's pace with bad speakers blaring "La Cucaracha" (nice selection, Akbar) up and down the streets. His... [more]

There's definitely an interesting back story here regarding the snitch. Did she confide in someone? Cross paths with someone from Saginaw? The proverbial jilted lover? A customer who was wronged? One of the most surreal moments in my life: Taking a 15-hour flight to Narita, then an hour train ride to Tokyo Station, and arriving (jet-lagged, dazed) just in time for rush hour. Imagine looking up a huge staircase and seeing an endless tidal wave of Japanese men in dark suits and white shirts flowing toward you...and you're the only one going up...... [more]

As far as fear of heights goes this video of people on top of a crane IS TERRIFYING.

That crane thing just got me... I don't really have a problem with heights -- I enjoy climbing and flying, etc., but that crane vid was tough. The walkway had me squinting mainly because of the perceived speed with which the cameraperson was cruising that POS walkway. He/she even passed someone -- and those rail crossing were crazy. But the chin-ups without a net were nuts. Ever watch those old Buster Keaton films? That dude had a penchant for high places and insane antics. And there were... [more]
