In five years time, Metafilter will be neurally networked into each of us and we will all be finely-honed front-page-posting-machines. All password and jrun information will flow freely through our bloodstreams as we dance naked in the collective sub-Metafilter-conscience.

Or, i'll be sitting on a bus somewhere wondering what my password is.

(Caveat - I am very pro-helpful images esp. in AskMe...all the examples above are great)

But, if Matt wanted to diabled the img tag to staunch the Man Titties, couldn't the same helpful effect be acheived by just including a link to the image...rather than making it inline?

Like a link to:

(I hope that "align-left" business doesn't break this page...please hope me if it does)

I can also imagine how innappropriate the grinning smiley face boxes would be for a sad or depressing discussion:

[SMILIE] I just ran over my kitten and it is dying slowing in my arms...what do I do?

[SMILIE] OMG THAT"S SO SAD

[SMILIE] Put your wittle kitten in the freezer...it will go to sleep. Tell him you love him before you do.

MeTa post: Obvious vs Obtuse More...
I, too, am in the "oh great, some huge block of links and skipped it entirely" camp. If i'm going to get and read newsfilter, sure, i'd like to see several (not a billion-millon) supporting/backstory/contextual links...but i'd also like it to read normally...and the text to flow normally into the links (again, contextually). In short, nicwolf seriously nailed it.

Cleverness is ok, I guess, for some things...but most... [more]

In theory, I think the source of a MeFi link (the "via") would (should?) be an interesting link that, like the rest of the links in a good FPP, backs up the central idea (and is perhaps some source that not a lot of people are aware of).

In theory. In practice, it's all boingboing.
