the economics of intercity bus services

Long-distance bus service in many countries is often pretty good, and there are multiple carriers - especially in many low to middle income countries. In the US, there are only two real major players (Greyhound and Peter Pan, which work together), and then a bunch of short haul operators like the many DC-NYC express buses. Does anyone know much regarding the economics of the long-distance bus industry?

searching for a small foldout couch/futon

I'm looking for a small, comfortable couch futon that converts into a small fold out bed. I live in a small basement studio and space is at a premium. I'd like one no wider than 45 inches, that can unfold to a small bed, and that sits at a high level (no ground level ikea futons)

looking for a portable, sturdy hammock stand

Where is the best place to buy a hammock stand? I have two hammocks, bought in Central America, that I'd like to use. One has a wood spreader bar, the other doesn't. I like to find a decent, outdoor worthy hammock stand that I can use for both.

getting new passport pages

I am getting ready to go on a trip this summer, and I've noticed that I may be running out of places for entry/exit stamps in my passport (my next trip will involve a lot of entry/exits to different countries and the US). If I run out of places in my passport upon reentry, will this present a problem? And is there any way to get new passport pages without sending my passport in for four-six weeks?

Opening a 529 when I don't have kids

I'm in my mid-20s, and having worked several jobs (often a couple at a time) through college and grad school, I would like to avoid the same fate for my (future) children. Can I open a 529 and start saving without having any kids?

a few days in mexico city

So, I will be going to Mexico City for four days in early April. I have read the following threads here and here. I do speak Spanish and I am interested in what I should see (some questions not covered in the other threads)

I'm looking for affordable weekend trip ideas for this coming weekend from DC with a friend (evening of Feb 21, Feb 22, 23 and 24th) Either a super-cheap flight to somewhere cool or somewhere within about 6 hours driving distance.

Advice for getting to Nicaragua from San Jose, Costa Rica.

In mid-January, I will be going to Nicaragua and Costa Rica for about 10 days. We will be flying into San Jose, Costa Rica - and do a day there, with the rest of the time spent in Nicaragua. I need advice on inter-country buses.

architecture 101 classes

I don't know much about architecture, except that I really enjoying time looking at good examples of it - and will go see places just for that. Where can I find free or low cost classes to learn more about architecture? (Second choice would be a good online resources). I'm not only looking for classes (which I can do via google), but people's experiences with them I am in DC. Transit accessibility is more or less a necessity.
